Hi, I bought the grade 7 differientated spelling package and I do like it but I purchased it thinking that it was specifically for grade 7 as it states in the title. Only when I downloaded it, does it say repeatedly that it is meant for grade 5. I do not like this at all. This is misleading and it should not state that this is for grade 7 specifically. It does say later on when reading the package that there is a range for grades 4-8, but then it goes on to repeat that this is for grade 5. I haven't rated this yet because I wanted to hear what your response is. Thanks for the time and the spelling program, just disappointed to find out that it is for grade 5. It is alot of money to spend on something when it isn't what you thought it would be.

Nicole,

I'm so sorry. Differentiated Spelling Instruction is a new listing for me on TpT. I've sold several of the other grade levels with great reviews; however, yours is the first sale for the seventh grade version. The file name I uploaded said "Grade 7," but it was the "Grade 5" version. No wonder it kept saying "Grade 5" throughout your download!

I've uploaded the proper "Grade 7" file and so now you can upload the proper grade level. I'm a seventh grade teacher like you, so I know what a nightmare it would be to provide the wrong grade level to your students.

I know you and your students will love Differentiated Spelling Instruction Grade 7, but let me make further amends to you for all of the confusion. Please select any other of my products on TpT and I will gladly sent you a complimentary digital copy. Contact me directly at mark@penningtonpublishing.com and I will send it right out to you.

Again, my apologies...

Would this be a good resource for me? I'll be investing my own money so I'm really cautious. I have 4/5 special Ed students who read on a 1st-2nd grade level. I have 70 minutes for reading instruction. They would like for me to teach the 4/5 common core standards but I also need remedial programs to help them improve fluency. They have done away with our current reading program and have not replaced it yet so I'm creating my own.

Pennington Publishing  (TpT Seller)
Yes. Each of your students is different and will require an individualized reading plan. Fluency will be an issue for some, but perhaps not for all. The 13 diagnostic assessments will determine these needs; the corresponding activities and worksheets will address those needs. Progress monitoring matrices will prove progress to your students, their parents, your principal, and most of all... to you. You are in charge of this flexible program. Whether you are a veteran or newbie, these are the tools you will use.

The direct instruction syllabication and blending, as well as the comprehension worksheets and fluency practice make this a solid choice for Tier I and Tier II RtI.

Hello!

I am starting an intervention class for 7th graders that are reading under 123 words per minute. Do you think the Reading Fluency and Comprehension toolkit would be a good resource for these students? My immediate goal is to increase fluency and improving comprehension would obviously be welcomed. How does the kit work? I saw the mention of CDs but I'm wondering how to get those? Is this research based?

Yes. The passages are expository, not narrative. The comprehension strategies help students internalize the five question prompts. No CDs on this eBook, of course. The product does not need any media. Of course it is research based; but to be honest, would any author say No?"

I've taught seventh grade intervention and know this product works. I do recommend that you upgrade to Teaching Reading Strategies, which includes this entire book plus a diagnostically-based, comprehensive reading intervention program.

I am an MA Reading Specialist, by the way.

Absolutely. Here's why: Your fourth-graders are snowflakes. The trick is to determine their differences and target instruction accordingly. The 13 whole class assessments allow the teacher to do so and provides the resources to individualize instruction. Additionally, the program gives the teacher the scripted instructions to teach "whole class" and gap-fill. Teachers are in charge of this program and not the converse. Both newbs and vets will appreciate the flexibility of this program.

I am looking for a diagnostic reading level test to determine where my students' reading levels are at for the beginning of the school year. Is this what the product is used for? Thanks!
August 14, 2013 Report inappropriate comment
Pennington Publishing
Pennington Publishing  (TpT Seller)
Janelle,

Not if you mean a grade-level equivalent. That determination would not be diagnostic. This product has thirteen diagnostic reading assessments i.e., the teacher is able to administer the test, see the relative strengths and weaknesses on each tested component and adjust instruction accordingly.

If you want an assessment to determine what level books students should read independently, I suggest using a much more direct approach that applies word recognition to the specific text to determine if the text-reader match is appropriate for the individual learner’s optimal “zone of proximal development” follows. It’s reader-centered and easy to train students and parents to use to select independent reading books.

The goal is to match individual readers to text that has about 5% unknown words. A much higher percentage is too hard for the reader; a much lower percentage is too easy for the reader.

How can you pick a book to read that has 5% unknown words? Choose a book of any genre and count the number of words on any complete page found near the beginning of the book and multiply that number by 3. Read a page toward the beginning of the book, counting the number of unknown words. A good guideline would be “if you can’t define it with a synonym, antonym, or example,” it is unknown. Then, read a page near the middle of the book and continue the count. Finally, read a page near the end of the book and finish the count. Divide the total number of unknown words by the total number of words found on the three pages. The result will be the percentage of unknown words. Anything within the 4-6% range is acceptable. For example, a reader counts the number of words on a page and arrives at 225. 225 x 3 = 750. After reading the three pages, the amount of unknown words totals 30. 30.00 divided by 750 = .05, or 5%.

Does this program address spelling needs for students who are spelling at a grade 1/2 level and are in grade 5/6? How would you give the diagnostic test to these low level students who cannot even spell rag or top??
August 11, 2013 Report inappropriate comment
Pennington Publishing
Pennington Publishing  (TpT Seller)
Yes. A fair and cogent question as well. The Differentiated Spelling Instruction Grades 4-8 program series does assess K-3 spellings for remediation, as well as provide grade level spelling patterns aligned to the Common Core Standards.

The DSI Spelling Diagnostic Assessment measures the short a, as in rag, and the short o as in top. Each has a corresponding worksheet with minimal reading demands. However, the assessment uses multisyllabic words to isolate and assess those sound-spellings.

For example, the first spelling word is "bumper." The word "bumper" is used, rather than "bump" or "bun" because most remedial spellers, such as your 5/6 student have become sight-word dependent, as part of their survival/coping strategies. That student most likely would use word recognition skills, rather than word identification skills to encode the single syllabic word. These students treat every word as a "sight spelling." In all likelihood the student has learned to read via "Dick and Jane" look-say methods or onset-rhyme techniques, rather than through explicit and systematic phonics instruction.

In correcting that item, the teacher is instructed only to correct the short vowel u. So if the student spells "bumpr," than it is correct. Another spelling test item will catch the "er" spelling deficit.

Of course the plan is to re-work the writing samples in the packet you purchased. However, in terms of instructional approaches, I've found success with these:
For coherence... pair share asking for thumbs up if a sentence within paragraph is clear; thumbs down if not.
For unity... peer response highlighting any words, sentences off topic or thesis
For parallelism... use good models, such as the Gettysburg Address and check out my practice on grammatical sentence openers here: http://penningtonpublishing.com/blog/writing/how-to-improve-your-writing-style-with-grammatical-sentence-openers/ and model using similar parts of speech, inflected endings, and verb forms.

September 10, 2012 Report inappropriate comment
Pennington Publishing
Pennington Publishing  (TpT Seller)
This is exactly the target audience. I taught four years of 9th grade remedial reading. The thirteen assessments will determine which areas of reading deficit each student has and the worksheets/activities enable the teacher to address each issue. Each fluency and comprehension worksheet has the first two paragraphs at the third grade reading level; the next two at the fifth grade reading level; and the last two at the seventh grade reading level: all expository text, by the way. Just what these students need.

I'm betting that you will find some major phonemic awareness and phonics deficits, however... Teaching to those deficits on an individual or small group basis while concurrently providing direct instruction and practice in comprehension and fluency will make a world of difference for these students.

Not to upsale you, but these students will also have significant spelling and vocabulary deficits. So Teaching Spelling and Vocabulary would be a hand in glove fit with Teaching Reading Strategies. Probably Level C would be my recommendation. The direct instruction at that level would be appropriate for all and the activities and resources to teach to the results of the spelling diagnostic assessment would perfectly complement those in Teaching Reading Strategies.
In sum, a quality reading intervention program at the freshman level should be balanced and include both encoding and decoding instruction.

Buyer re: Essay Strategies Toolkit
Mark, I teach expelled students (7-12th grades) in an urban setting. My goal this year is to focus on specific and concrete ways to improve their writing. It appears that your materials on teaching the essay will be invaluable. Does your Teaching Essay Strategies ($49) include Essay Strategies Toolkit ($19.95) and Writing Openers and Fluency Toolkit ($19.95)? The toolkits appear to be particularly useful but your description indicates they may be included in the $49 version. Please help me make a cost-effective selection. Thank. Kathi

Dear Mr Pennington,
What a surprise to see your work here and I am very excited about. It was just last night that I found a website that had these same materials at a much higher price... I am a new 4th grade teacher and I have been teaching for over 25+ years. I grew up with sentence diagramming and I am looking for a resource that deals mainly with introducing sentence diagramming to fourth graders. You have so manyyyyyy different programs my head is spending with excitement but I am limited in my funds. So which 2-3 programs would you recommend for me to start with that mainly deals with sentence diagramming?

Sounds like Teaching Grammar and Mechanics is your primary purchase. However, I would also recommend Teaching Spelling and Vocabulary Level A as this is the 4th grade level with differentiated instruction in those K-3 vowel sound-spelling patterns.

Thanks for asking,

Buyer re: Grammar Toolkit (Grammar, Usage, and Mechanics Worksheets)
I'm purchasing you Grammar Toolkit after going over the preview. I want to quit teaching what many (but not all) of the students already know. Looks like a manageable way to finally teach what they need. However, I need you to help me: Q.1 of Grammar Assessment - Why isn't "man" a correct choice? Your key indicates the correct answer as "her." I would think either is correct.
Thanking you in advance for your response!

Oops! The answer is man. Her would be a pronoun, of course. Thank you for bringing it to my attention. It is correct on my website. Suggest you download the grammar assessment at http://penningtonpublishing.com/assessments/Grammar%20Assessment.pdf on www.penningtonpublishing.com. Will fix on TpT.

Mark-how would you incorporate this into a high school RTI English class? How much time would you spend on this book?

One hour, per week... including three five-minute openers and three fifteen-minute writing worksheet/mini-conference settings. The latter suspended when you are working on any of the eight Common Core State Standard process essays.
This is perfect RTI, as it allows students to work at their own pace, and differentiates instruction via remedial worksheets from level to level, as needed.
And... don't forget, you get the very useful Essay e-Comments download with your Teaching Essay Strategies purchase.

Hello,
This looks like an excellent product! Do you have pages that deal with the schwa sound? Can you elaborate a bit on the nature of the exercise?

Thank you!

Hello Gabrielle,

It just so happens that I taught three lessons on the schwa last week--weird coincidence. Yes, the syllable rules activity has the schwa, and yes, there is a syllables lesson on the schwa with worksheet.

Essentially, the first part of the book has the outlaw words, rimes, and sight-syllables diagnostic assessments (with answers and recording matrices), flashcards of these with activities.

The second section of the book is the transformers activity. Using nonsense syllables, students practice the open, closed, final e, digraphs rules whole class via a projector display. Incredible activity, helping students to inductively learn the rules by examples.
Check out more at http://penningtonpublishing.com/blog/reading/how-to-teach-syllabication-the-syllable-rules/

The third portion of the book has the syllable word lists and corresponding student worksheets. Here is where the schwa comes in... Real words to practice application of the rules, syllable division, and of course, syllable blending.

Does the differentiated spelling instruction have different spelling list for each lesson. A high one and a low one?
August 15, 2010 Report inappropriate comment

Pennington Publishing  (TpT Seller)
No, each list is based upon a spelling pattern. So there are no "hard" or "easy" words, per say. However, each list is designed to reflect grade-level vocabulary with a few challenge words.

The differentiation is derived from accompanying word lists, previous post-tests, and from student writing.

Of course, the spelling patterns for Level A (4th grade) are reviewed in Level B (5th grade), so their are different spelling pattern words; however, the high-low format would still not consistently apply.

Thank you for your inquiry. I think your students will benefit from Differentiated Spelling Instruction. Your remedial spellers will additionally benefit from the comprehensive Teaching Spelling and Vocabulary. Both found on TpT.

Absolutely. 64 sentence lifting activities covering all grammar, mechanics, and spelling your kids need for success, including basic to advanced skills for every grade level. But, why not upgrade to the entire curriculum, Teaching Grammar and Mechanics, which includes the openers and much more for a few dollars more.
