The Free Phonics Test is checking for the basics. Individual letter sounds, and short vowel sounds are tested, along with long vowel sounds made by Silent E or Double vowels (ea, ee, oa, etc.). The Free Phonics Test would be a very good place to begin. The tests can help you to determine if a student is sounding out (using decoding skills) or guessing. If you e-mail me at PhonicsAdvantageJanet@aol.com I can send you sheets on consonant blends, diphthong vowels and digraphs for more advanced testing.
Remember, for someone just getting out of 3rd grade, you want to make tutoring fun while still focusing on serious phonics/reading strategies. If Silent E is a problem, I urge you to try playing Silent Magic. If consonant blends need addressing, try improvising the Build-A-Word games by making blends tiles. My Word Family Bingo is posted for free. The Free Phonics Test comes with strategy suggestions. I also suggest reading phonics poems - rhythm and rhyme can make reading fun. Above all, remember that reading is identifying SOUND symbolized by letters or letter combinations. If you use worksheets, be sure to review them verbally.
