A large part of the 1st 1/2 is based of word families, practicing the last part of the word, then adding the beginning -- This is an approach that I do not use and avoid when I have enough info about a product.

I teach high school special ed and am a believer in phonics as a critical tool for my students who have never learned to read using other methods. I really like the color coding for vowels because they are the phonemes that my students don't "hear" accurately.

Thank you for your suggestion. The 30 phonics poems have been updated, and the download now contains two zipped PDF files. The original PDF can be viewed on iPads, computers and tablets or printed single sided. The second version can be printed double sided.

It looks like a great product. However I have experienced difficulty downloading it. It opens in excel and only shows the title page. Please let me know if I should use another program or do something different. I would love to use this with my ESL students

The Excel spreadsheet has more than twenty tabs. To move to another page, click a tab at the bottom of the page. There is a Monday - Thursday sample for each short-vowel sound. The more than twenty tabs give you plenty of examples and opportunities for making your own version to fit your specific class requirements. If you want to use a page, but would like to keep the original copy, right click on the tab, choose Move or Copy, then select the box Create a Copy. You really use your imagination when choosing topics and pictures for your books. It is not easy to use the beginning sound/letter combinations and make them interesting, but you do! And more importantly, interesting makes memorable.

I still wish you could put up some preview that was viewable -- even if it is the same images in the sample images -- usually I can zoom on them and get an idea of the words. I buy a lot of phonic stuff and the money adds up (just like in the $ store). I do have a particular idea of what I'm looking for -- when I can see a sample with the words readable-- then I can make better purchase choices. Thank you for your time.

Phonics Advantage (TpT Seller)
Thank you for your interest in Phonics Strategies for Older Students. I have added more details of the packet content in the product description in the Phonics Advantage store. I hope that it will give you insight into what the packet contains.
Nonsense Words reading sheets are used to give the student practice in decoding words. The Nonsense Words reading sheets are used for building a foundation of how various letter sounds go together. They enable practice with phonograms that may not appear in small (real) words. I am able to rotate 33 beginning consonant blends and digraphs with pretend words, allowing students to practice sounds often enough to master even the harder or more rarely occurring blends. All the Nonsense Words reading sheets focus on vowel sounds and how they are combined with ending consonants to form phonograms to help the student recognize both word families and how syllables in longer words often end with a phonogram.
Phonogram Review Sheets, Pronunciation Clues, Spelling Clues, sheets on Word Endings and Suffixes all use real words with an emphasis on longer words which have been divided into syllables to enable students to learn that big words are made up of smaller parts; and if you decode the smaller parts, large words are not threatening.
Worksheets place an emphasis on phonograms and dividing words into syllables, giving students practice in reducing long words into more manageable parts.

I really do not know what your question is referring to: (“Do you mean pro or con the freebies?”) If you tell me the name of a product or products, I will look over the description and try to clear up any misunderstanding. The first reason I list products for free is because I’ve used them in the past and I believe in the positive impact they can have on helping a student learn to read. I want the product to reach as many students as possible. A second reason I may post something for free is that it may require a teacher’s time – it is not a simple “download and go” product - many games require printing and laminating, or the printable readers require printing, folding and stapling. I believe these products can make learning to read easier or more fun, and offering them for free is my thank you to the teacher for the time it takes them to prepare the product.
If you are referring to the Emergent/Beginning Reader Series, the content of the readers is identical, the format is just different. The printable version requires time to print and fold, but they can be sent home in backpacks. The iPad version requires no additional teacher time. Students can read the books on a computer in the classroom, or the teacher can e-mail the Beginning Readers to students’ homes where they can read them on home computers, iPads and tablets.

Hello. I just LOVE the poems that you have made to go along with all your units! Would you ever consider selling a license for the poems - without the phonics content - for personal and/or commercial use? My son will be starting first grade this year (in Australia) and he needs some extra practice with his multiple phonograms. I would like to make him some booklets, reading comprehension work and worksheets and would like to include some of your poems. What you have created is FANTASTIC, but my son finds it challenging to concentrate for a long period of time without lots of pictures, colour, etc. Please consider this, as it would REALLY make my life so much easier :)
