I love these posters. They're attractive and colorful. I'm putting them up in my room tomorrow. I was just wondering if you could take the ridges off of the nickel and the penny. That's one of the things we teach when we do coins is that the penny and the nickel have smooth edges and the dime and the quarter have ridges. :)

Hi there. Sorry I am just now getting back to you. A family member had emergency surgery, and I have been away and out of state because of it. I didn't create the graphics used in the posters, so I can't change the graphics themselves. I can replace the penny and nickel graphics with a graphics set that does not include ridges, but they will not match the look of the other coins. If you are interested, please just send me an email at primaryjunctionblog@gmail.com and I will send you a copy of the posters using different graphics for the penny and nickel. Thank you!

This question does not go with these hands out exactly. I saw Rachel Lamb post the presentation you two did at NCAEE and she had linked these which I use at conferences and LOVE! I absolutely loved the slide that had the quarter checklists. I have checked both of you blogs and stores and did not find them so I wanted to ask if you made these and if they are available for purchase? I would love to send these home each quarter to help my families help their child. Thank you so much for your time!

Hi Caitlin! I'm so glad you came across our presentation and found it to be helpful! Thank you for your kind words about these handouts. It makes my day to hear that you use them at conferences! As for the quarter checklists, yes, I made those! I've never made them available on my blog or in my store simply because I know every district's scope and sequence is different and they wouldn't apply to everyone. Thank you so much for letting me know you are interested though. Give me a week or two, and I will see if I can come up with a version that can apply to everyone or that is editable. If I can, I'll blog about it. Thanks again! - Kayla

Hi there! First of all, thank you for your kind comments! I'm so happy to hear you used the fluency sheets and liked them! I include these fluency and question sheets in almost all of my thematic unit packets (ex: Open Wide: A Dental Health Unit, President's Day Unit, Celebrating Christmas And Other Holidays Around The World, Pumpkin Day, and Hippity, Hop, Spring Is On Its Way), but they also have other activities included as well. The Hippity, Hop, Spring Is On Its Way packet includes 9 of these that cover March-June topics. It also contains a ton of other activities for these months. In addition, my United States Fluency, Comprehension, and Map Quiz Packet consists of a fluency and comprehension sheet for each of the 50 US States. It is a little harder than the St. Patrick's Day packet and is intended for high 2nd grade readers and up. Sample pages are included in the preview so that you can determine if they will meet your students' needs. Also, my free Titanic packet contains several fluency and comprehension sheets. I hope this helps! Thank you for letting me know that you are interested in more! I'm going to add this to my to-do list and will hopefully get to put together a year's worth of these in a packet soon! -Kayla

My kids have enjoyed the parts of the unit that I have done with them (it was my first time and I didn't get to all of it). Jennifer, I love the unit and I'm looking forward to using it again this year, but I find that I have trouble trying to run the student booklets back to back and having them make sense. Is there a secret to putting them together so that they can be folded in half in the correct order. I also am unable to open the flip chart and the notebook on my apple. Thanks so much. My email is ontimesue@aol.com. Thanks again.

Primary Junction  (TpT Seller)
Hi. I print the pages front to back on my printer at home, and then run them through the copier at work, magazine style. It scans the pages, copies, and then staples them. I make my booklets once and reuse them, so I need them to be sturdy. Another way to do this (and also an easier way) is to print them one sided and then fold each page in half with the blank side towards the inside. Then, put all of the pages in order and staple them on the left. This makes the books last a long time.

As for the flip chart and notebook files, they are for interactive whiteboards. You will need either a SMARTBoard or a Promethean ActivBoard. You can download the software for free at (ActivBoard - http://www.prometheanworld.com/us/english/education/products/classroom-software/activinspire/) (SMARTBoard - http://smarttech.com/Home+Page/Support/Browse+Support/Download+Software/Software/SMART+Notebook+collaborative+learning+software/SMART+Notebook+software)

I used this today in my class as a follow up to our playground rule walk as well as reading the story Officer Buckle and Gloria (Peggy Rathmann). The kids loved it and I really like your suggestion of making it homework as a way to keep parents informed about the playground expectations! I do have a question, and see it has already been posed: how to assemble so that book pages are in the correct order. However, I'm still a bit perplexed! I couldn't seem to figure out how to get the pages in order sequentially although I tried two different methods of assembly. Could you possibly either number the pages or in the Product Overview provide a list of page numbers with a short description (maybe just the beginning of the sentence) as a reference? Thanks for a great resource.
August 14, 2013 Report inappropriate comment
Primary Junction
Primary Junction  (TpT Seller)
The pages go in the order they are in the file. The reader is written in a way though that as long as the first and last pages as in the right order, the rest of the story order doesn't matter. If you have access to a copier, you will need to go into the settings and copy it back to front, magazine style. If needed, you can always print them back to front from your printer. This may make it easier for you to copy them on the printer. Some printers have this setting, or you can print one page, flip the page over, and print the next page on the back, and so on. Hope this helps!

There are definitely more units on the way. I've spent a little more time vacationing this summer than I had planned to. Now, I'm kicking into high gear! Haha. I am finishing up a packet on US states at the moment, which I hope to have finished this week. Then, my full attention will go to finishing more Common Core packets. I'm aiming to have the next one completed sometime in August, and the rest will follow after that.

Second Grade is the best! I'm so excited for you. I know how tricky it can be entering a new grade, so if you ever have any questions, don't hesitate to send me an email! I'd be glad to be of any help! :-) Thanks again for the question. It truly made my day to see this.

Hi there! I'm so glad you like the readers. If you're printing at home, you can simply print on a page and then put the paper back in the printer on the other side to print the back page. Then, just fold along the line in the middle of the pages and staple. If you're using a copying machine, there is usually an option that will allow you to run copies using the "booklet/magazine" function. It will scan all of the pages and then print them front to back, and even staple them for you. Since every copying machine is different, you'll need to play around with a copying machine menu to find it on yours or just ask someone at school or in the office, and they'll be able to tell you how to get to it on yours! Hope this helps!

Good morning! I am a first grade teacher, formerly PK teacher. I just finished my masters in May (yea!) with a degree in Mind, Brain and Education – a subfield of education. The first program was started at Harvard by Howard Gardner and Kurt Fisher (if you haven’t read any of Kurt Fisher’s work on Skill Theory and you are interested in the cognitive processes involved in learning, you must read his work!)

Cut to the chase. When I moved up from PK to 1st I was shocked by my students’ lack of number sense. I spent an entire year and all last summer trying to figure out what was missing. In Nov I attended a workshop that on number sense. When I heard the presentation I recognized all the “big” names of the research I had been investigating. The workshop was a training session for an iPad app (Native Numbers). It seemed like a valid, robust app, but I am a skeptic and had to know: would this really work.

I am here to tell you that with the first skill set I saw every cognitive model of learning embedded in this app. I also realized that this app is more than a learning tool; it has built in formative and summative assessment as it is adaptive and levels up and down based on student performance and leads to mastery.

Now I am on a “mission” – everything we read tells us our students are lacking number sense. I believe this app is a fabulous tool to remediate those deficits. I have no vested interest in this app except that I am one of those people that has to solve problems and when I think I have found possible answers, I have to share that with others. Our kids are too important not to share---which is why I love reading blogs! I am asking for teachers to simply read the research and then try out the app and give me feedback---or give the feedback yourself to the developers. I am that convinced. I am not a salesman and I feel quite strange in this new role I have taken upon myself…but I have nothing to lose, or gain, except knowing that maybe we can have an enormous impact on our students!

If you have any questions, please e-mail me at tatergraderswife@yahoo.com Check out the app at www.nativebrain.com – you can find the background of the developers and read about the research behind the app. You can also watch a video on that site or go to these YouTube links:

I saw your "our classroom story problems" booklet and guides on pintrest. I can't seem to find the forms...would love to use, rather not reinvent the wheel.

Hi! I haven't created anything similar to a "Our Classroom Story Problems" booklet, but it was probably another teacher's creation/idea that I pinned on Pinterest. I went through my boards to see if I could find something similar - is this what you are looking for - http://loryevanspage.blogspot.com/2011/06/math-work-stations-chapter-5.html ? If so, her TPT page is http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Lory-Evans I would just send her a note, and I'm sure she'd be more than willing to help! If that isn't what you are looking for, please just let me know (and if you still have the Pinterest pin - send it!), and I'll try to find the original creator. :-) Hope this helps!

Is the passport a PDF document or a Word doc? I would love to have this for our upcoming Christmas unit, but we're studying some different countries and would need to be able to change the passport. Thanks!

Hi! The passport is in a PDF document, but I included six passports (mixing up the 10 different countries) as well as a blank passport so you could write in (with a pen) your countries if needed. There's also an included note in the unit to just send me an email if you need a custom-made passport (I know we all study different countries!), and I'll make one for you free of charge! Hope this helps!

What is a flip chart and what do I need to open and use it? Can it be used on a smartboard?

Hi! A flipchart is a file for The Promethean ActivBoard. The Promethean ActivBoard is very similar to a SmartBoard, but it uses a different software program. If you have any other questions, please just let me know!

I just wanted to let you know that there is a mistake on the ABC order page. The elephant represents Republicans and the donkey represents Democrats. The activities have been great. Thank you.

Hi there! Glad you like the packet. I corrected this awhile back and uploaded a revised version. You must have purchased and downloaded the file prior to this! If you go to "My Purchases" you should see an update notice next to this file, and just download again. :-)

Hi! I love your packet of parent handouts. My school has been working on compiling a similar handout to give to our families. I hope I'm not overstepping with this request, but I was wondering if there was any way to get these handouts in an editable format, instead of as a PDF. I teach at a bilingual school and most of our families are Spanish speakers. I would love to send this packet home with our families, but we'd need to translate it. The graphics and formatting looks so good on yours and I'd want the Spanish version to be equally visually appealing, as well as informative. I would be happy to get it translated and then send it back to you as a bilingual document. Please let me know what you think! Thanks!

Hi There Primary Junction,

I am the book review editor for the Tchr2Tchr collaborative blog. I wanted to invite you to be a guest reviewer and write a book review for us. You could review one of the related Titanic books and link your Titanic - Read All About It unit at the bottom of the review. Book reviews can be short; the minimum is 200 words, so a paragraph or two. We would also link your store and your blog to the review.

If you're interested you can find all of the details here:

Thanks for considering collaborating with us!
