We have been loving each and every part of this pack as we finish up our last week of school! I was using the Shades of Meaning as a center for a guided reading group to practice synonyms and noticed a mistake! On the recording sheet the word "chef" is listed. However, the cards to match there is also a "chef". I had my students come up with their own synonym but they were both the same. Just wanted to let you know! We have loved both this and the math end of the year extravaganza! Thanks so much for your work on both of these!

Hi! I'm so glad you found my blog and are interested in my ELA units! When I read a Magic Tree House book with my kids, those units have a set of comprehension questions for each chapter. So I will give them my kids questions before reading and go over them together, so they know what they're looking for and aren't just zoning out while I read aloud. I feel like this holds them more accountable when listening to me read. I do let them answer the questions as we read too. I use my iPad and SmartBoard to project an e-book version of the book while I read aloud. Many of my kids like to visually track on the Smartboard while I read (and see the pictures better), some of my struggling readers have difficulty with this but I have found they still respond just listening or I may give just a few a copy of the book to track while I read. I have a few class sets of MTH books but mostly I use my iPad to read it aloud. Charlotte's Web was really long so I didn't use comprehension questions per chapter, I did include a few reader response journal questions after I read several chapters but most of that book was just a read aloud. I also try to break up when I'm reading the books aloud, with MTH I read one chapter during our ELA time and then we have silent reading time later in the day and I try to get a chapter in during that time too. I don't want to spend my whole time in whole group ELA just reading aloud (I like to get in some vocabulary and phonics instruction too), so I try to read during others time in the day as well. I don't really teach a specific skills like inferencing or summarizing, etc. when reading the chapter books. Instead I focus on what standards we are using during that unit and try to make sure our reader response questions/chapter questions address those standards. I am in love this product. It is awesome! I know very little about greek mythology, and this is right up the common core alley! I do have a favor. I am not familiar with all the morals for the stories that you wrote, and the kids and I are a little stuck. For example, with Odysseus and the Cyclops, Odysseus got away with stealing food and then tricked and stabbed Cyclops in the eye to escape. What is the moral or lesson? Would it be possible for you to send me or include the morals/lesson for the stories that you wrote? Some of my kids believe the moral is "Don't take something that is not yours without permission unless you are clever enough to get away." I do not think so.. :)

Hi! I am so glad you enjoy the stories! I had the hardest time writing them because the Greek Mythology characters are so entwined in each other's stories and they are complicated! Many of the stories have morals or lessons that are less than desirable to teach to younger students, which is why I was so surprised when the 4th grade teachers requested it because of the CCSS! That being said, when I re-wrote them I did "water them down" a bit to be more appropriate for 4th graders but this also took out some of the details in the original stories. For example, in the case of Odysseus, the cyclops story is just one of many that were written about him in the Odyssey and the Iliad. You will also read about him in the Telemachus story which came years after the Cyclops story. Odysseus did lie and cheat to survive during the war and as a punishment he wandered the Earth for many years including several trips to the underworld. So, as far as his lesson, in the cyclops story he does appear to get away with his actions but in the end he is punished in several ways. This is the case for many of the stories, they don't "end" with just the one story so, it would be difficult for me to send a list of the morals/lessons. Instead, I changed the general comprehension page to have the students reflect on the moral or lesson that was in the story they read. I would also suggest using the specific comprehension pages for stories that have questionable morals, like the Odysseus story. I hope this helps with your students. Hi! I would say at least 2 weeks if you teach science every day for about 45 minutes. There are 6 different animal life cycles to teach with booklets for each animal, sorts, flip books for each animal, cycle charts for each animal you could make, . There are also 5 journal prompts, a hunt activity, puzzles for independent practice and venn diagrams to compare several different animals. Depending on how quickly you teach and the level of your kiddos you could stretch it to 3 weeks.

Thanks so much for loving the clip art! It is a mix of designers. Some are KPM doodles, scrappin' doodles, Klouise Digi Art and SpringHill Graphics. I don't think these stories are appropriate for kindergartens to read independently or while tracking. You could read them aloud however, since they are international folktales many of the characters have lying, stealing or cheating and end in death. I know that sounds terrible but these are popular themes in international folktales in order to teach a lesson or moral. I have tried to re-write each story to be more kid-friendly but without taking away the plot of the story. I hope that helps!

Our curriculum in NC actually doesn't have us teaching earth materials in 2nd grade. There are cards for earth materials in the 1st grade set of science vocabulary cards. The 1st grade set has vocabulary cards for : rock, soil, sand, silt, clay, humus, hardness, soft, rounded, flat, curved, shiny, dull, texture, stone, gravel, pebble, dirt, conserve, erode, wear away, soak in, layer, wash away, filter with regard to rocks and earth materials.

Hi! I just ordered your word sort pack (love the routine posters!). I had a question about the homework part. On the homework contract, most of the activities to check off say that they were done with a buddy in their group - is this the right one for the homework? I was hoping it would have activities that they can do at home with their sorts since they won't be with their buddies. Looking forward to hearing from you!

I just purchased these cards. I think they are great, however I thought this pack was going to have pictures next to each vocabulary word... Instead it's just the words with no pictures. I already bought the kindergarten words which have pictures, I thought these would be like those but have more vocabulary words, etc. Any plans to make these with pictures to match?
