You noted this Digital Photography is more for Arts. I am curious about it being practical in another area. I teach computer technology and I am starting a new course on Photoshop for 9-12. Your package - do you think it can cross over and work for a more technology driven course and not art?

Oops! sorry , I just saw this one, my apologies.
Yes, this could be utilized for both arts and technology. The lessons walk you through how to utilize individual tools for each lesson. You can modify the lessons so they aren't so arts based.
I teach these lessons with 7-12 graders in the same class, so many levels of abilities but also most students like using the camera and the computer... especially when they are shooting photos of things they like (like themselves, friends, etc.)
It does explain some of the photography elements (lighting, rule of thirds, shadows, subject matter) but not so much in the way of "how to use your camera" as they all bring in different cameras and they already know how to use the majority of the buttons. We have conferences on Fridays to discuss when we could use certain filters/button choices to give them more opportunities to learn about their cameras and the photoshop abilities, rather than continually seeing the same old filters, which look very manipulated, and less artistic. (I hope you understand that, huge pet peeve of mine).

I am new to TPT and seem to have similar interests. Have you hears of DBEA? Teaching all subjects through the arts. That is what my units striove to do. I taught in Cleveland at the Elementary School of Arts until my recent retirement. I am hoping that my work will be well received. Any observations or suggestions?

Yes, I think you should test the waters with one good lesson (as your first one needs to be free). I have noticed that more people like whole lessons (including example pictures, any rubrics and images examples, etc.)

Hi Raven, I teach 9-12 photography class. I am now in block schedule and love it. We take pictures and work in Photoshop along with the state (Utah) standards. I use CS5.5. I read your other questions from people. Have you updated your Digital Photography 20 Week Course. Like I read about the old Photoshop I used CS2 for the last 8 years and this new CS5.5 just has a different feel but just like you said, it's kind of all the same=) Can I tweek it? Is it in a Word document? Do your assignments get more challenging? Is it for high school students?

I have not updated this lesson (maybe I should look into that this semester!) Yes, I believe if you feel comfortable with your Photoshop version, you could tweek or adapt it to fit your needs and talents. The document is in Word, and they begin with basic intro to Photoshop skills, then I keep introducing more tools for each assignment. Yes, I created this for high school, but it could be adapted for middle school.
I think it's very challenging at this point, since most high school students have had experience with Photoshop and REALLY love to use/abuse filters, without understanding how to use the other important tools, while keeping the artwork within the art realm, and not looking like a filter. Hopefully this bundle will help with the basic as well as the more complex tools in Photoshop. - Raven

Raven, I am especially interested in the Photoshop Instructions for students. Could you elaborate on what those are like? Is it step by step that the students could do on their own (with guidance)? I am using Photoshop CS3. What version is your curriculum made for? Is it possible to send me an example of what they look like?

I created these lessons in Photoshop 7.0, but I have CS3 now, and they are still compatible. The lessons are for teacher eyes as they have the point by point directions to share with students... mostly going through the different tools for each project.
I apologize that I do not have an example on this computer to share what they look like: but for clarification... they are numbered steps, for example they might read, Go TO File, scroll to Open. THey really are made for a non-Photoshop friendly person.
At the time I created these lessons, I was the new graphic/video teacher in HS... and the students all knew Photoshop, but they only knew certain tools. So my goal was to take a set of tools to share and broaden their experience with each project. By the end of the semester they knew a great range of tools and abilities. My favorite is the photo restoration project as it is a compilation of many tools and techniques.

Would this be appropriate for grades 5 and 6 - gifted students? How many cameras would be needed for a group of 10? Are students required to have access to a digital camera at home? Do you charge any type of supply fee?

Good morning! I am teaching G&T presently, so I do feel comfortable saying that you could adapt these lessons very easily to the middle level age groups. I offered 3 cameras to share and offered if they wanted to use their own cameras to bring them into class. Typically they did not share their personal cameras. For a group of 10, you could break them into groups with 2-3 students per camera and still be successful with time. the quality of conversation will be perfect, having them discuss what they see and why they woudl choose a certain subject matter, lighting, pose, etc.
I teach in a public school, so I could not charge a fee for the class, or supplies, it was in my budget for art supplies if I have it or not. THe 3 digital cameras was nice to have... I supplied a lock for my drawer and a sign out sheet if anyone borrowed it after school/class.
Several of the lessons do utilize Photoshop to manipulate the images. When I teach photography to 4th grade, I start with the basics of photo (posing,lighting, background, rule of 3rds, etc) and I only add in the Photoshop in high school to keep their interest as they tend to be at a wider range of abilities.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE
I have taught Art classes with students from pre-K through 12th grade. I have also taught Gifted and Talented classes in grades 3-12. I have taught in urban, suburban, and rural settings, as well as public, catholic and Montessori classrooms. I have also had the luxury of learning organization through having 2 years of splits...meaning, I taught in one district in a classroom for 2 days and in another district (as a push-in teacher) for the other 3 days. Whew!
MY TEACHING STYLE
I have taught my art classes trying to balance art production (making something) with art history and sprinkle in some art criticism. As budgets are cut (you can see from my long list of experiences) and I've been moved around, I realized that the Arts are only kept if we make superior connections and validations. All of my classes now have great discussion of facts while they are creating, and I like to offer them as math problems to solve, connecting to their Social Studies classes, or even collaborate with the music, PE, health, ELA, (etc) teachers. We are tricky, are we really learning just Art? No way! We are learning life and how it's all knitted together, purl or knit? you choose.
HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT
I love hearing, "Oooh, we learned that in art class". "Really? you learned about the different cloud names, graphing & division, balancing a checkbook, or the history of chocolate...all in Art?" The look of excitement to explain more, on each of our cherubs faces, is worth it all! While I was finishing my undergraduate work at Michigan, I was elected to a three year position as the President of Student Chapters for the National Art Education Association. This was a fabulous experience!!
MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY
I completed my undergraduate work at Northern Michigan University with a B.S. in Art Education and minors in Ceramics, Graphic Design and Native American History. Later, I completed my graduate work in Rochester, NY and completed a thesis on Visual Literacy. I wanted to research how to get students to talk more about their artwork and to defend why they make certain choices (color, composition, etc).

Presently, I am an Associate Professor in the Education Department and working towards my PhD.
