Buyer re: ELA Task Card Bundle {Common Core Aligned}
How do you use these in your classroom?
September 3, 2013 Report inappropriate comment
Right Down the Middle with Andrea
I love using task cards, and my students have always loved them! I have incorporated them into my classroom in a variety of ways: 1) I use them as a center activity for a skill we are covering in class, 2) I use them as a game the whole class can play, such as Scoot, and 3) I have used them as small group assignments and independent work where we pass the task cards around the room when the buzzer dings. I have found that my struggling students benefit the most from them because my task cards that I have created only ask the student to do one thing per card, so it is not so overwhelming for the students. My high performing students love them, too. I use them throughout the school year, and then I use them again as it gets closer to standardized testing as a way to review. My task card bundled set comes with the task cards, recording sheets where the students can write down their responses, and the answer key.

July 30, 2013 Report inappropriate comment
Right Down the Middle with Andrea
Thank you for your interest in this product! I use this anytime I "catch" a student using good behavior. I really try to make a big deal over good behavior. This was what I came up with that middle school and high school students responded positively to. The students may redeem their incentive slips for the reward specified. Some rewards can only be redeemed on certain days, but you can set up how often they can redeem them and on what days. Some rewards can be redeemed any day.

Here is what I use the following incentive cards for in my classroom: (These are only three examples.)

1. Next Top Designer- My students LOVE to help decorate my classroom. I have students who need to walk around, so if it is a day that I am going to re-do a bulletin board to follow along with changing of the standards, I might let one use a "Next Top Designer" card to go get a roll of butcher paper (or cut the specified amount from the work room). Our letter machine is in our library, so I send my paper and the letters I need with a student, and the student gets to punch out the letters I need. Depending on if a student is caught up with their reading and writing, I may even let them put up the paper and letters for the bulletin board.

2. If You Build It- I always keep Legos in my classroom. I use them for an expository/informational writing each year that the students love. After we complete that writing assignment at the beginning of the year, my students always beg me to let them play with the Legos when they are finished with their work. (This past year I taught 7th grade ELA, so they never get too old for Legos.) If you do not have Legos in your class, this may not work for you. However, I would suggest getting some because you can use them for writing, enrichment, etc.

3. Get to the Point- I have a cup in my classroom where students borrow a pencil if they forget to bring one or if their pencil breaks. Most of the time, the students return them pencils unsharpened. This incentive card allows a student to get the cup and sharpen all pencils that are in the cup. This gives them a chance to stand a bit, and it helps me out because the sharpening is finished. I also have marker, crayon, and colored pencil boxes that I allow students to organize. They can check to make sure the markers work; if they are out of ink, they get thrown away so they do not continue to take up space. They can sharpen the colored pencils so they are ready for the next time we need them in class. Small crayon pieces get thrown out as well.

If you have any other questions, please feel free to email me at a_m_bentley@yahoo.com.

Buyer re: Reading Literary Common Core Standards for Seventh Grade Language Arts
Hi Andrea. I am liking the preview that I saw. My question is do you have this set up as a year's worth of instruction? I currently will only be working with students 1 semester in 7th grade and am trying to prioritize the reading standards to maximize my instruction. In the past I have covered a lot of informational text structure. I saw you are working on creating something for that. Excited to see it. Thanks.
July 17, 2013 Report inappropriate comment
Right Down the Middle with Andrea
This is ideally for one semester for the Literary Common Core Standards. However, many of the handouts can be reused for other texts that you use with your students. In my class, we teach Literary one 9 weeks, then Informational for a 9 weeks, then Literary, and then Informational again. The Plot Structure Handout, Characterization Handout, Literary Analysis Handout, Too Much Drama Handout, Static vs Dynamic Handout, and Character Counts Handout are just a few that can be used with any literary text you are reading in class. Others are mini-lessons that I use when teaching Inference, Theme, Point of View, etc. The word wall words I just change as I need them according to what I am teaching at the time. I laminate them so they last and last.

I hope this helps answer your question. Yes, I am working on a huge set for Informational Text. It should be uploaded very soon! Thank you for your interest, and if I can answer any other questions, please let me know.

I have already left a response earlier but now I have some quesitons. Do you grade the journal entries? Is it a completion grade? Do you use a rubric?
July 8, 2013 Report inappropriate comment
Right Down the Middle with Andrea
This year I assigned a journal on Monday, and they were due by the end of the week. I allowed all week because some journals require parent and child interactions. Many parents work nights so it gave the students more time to sit down and write. I gave a completion grade each week for the journals. My main purpose was to involve parents and provide additional writing opportunities.

I really love this idea for journaling, I have not seen anything involves both student and parent. I teach 5th grade and wonder if you think the journal topics would be appropriate for my grade. I teach 4th grade and would love to use this in my classroom, but I have at least half of my students' parents that don't read or speak English. So I was thinking of having those students read the prompts to them in their home language, then the students can write in the journals on their own.
What is your advice?

April 19, 2013 Report inappropriate comment
Right Down the Middle with Andrea
Some standards do not have texts that accompany them; you are able to use them with any text you are reading in class. For example, the Literary Analysis handout will work for any work of literature. I use all of the handouts throughtout the year. Some of them I use numerous times because they apply to all works of literature we are reading. Some of the skill specific (ex: Inference handout) handouts are stand-alone handouts. I hope this helps.
