We feel like our students can relate to the characters in the book. We are concerned with how to address the language in the book with the children and their parents. Has this been an issue for you or other teachers that you know of? If so, how did you address this with the parents and students?

I can see why you love this book! I love it and don’t even live in Alabama!! As far as the language in the book, I would consult your administration first and get them on board. In the past, for books that might have questionable content, I have sent home a letter to parents detailing what might be of concern and allowing them to decide if they want to give permission for their child to read the book. If you do this, make sure that you offer a great alternative book for those kids that aren’t allowed to read Alabama Moon. Perhaps one of the other survival books listed, like Hatchet or My Side of the Mountain. The Girl Who Owned a City is a great book with a strong female main character. There is a small amount of violence in this book, so another parent permission slip might be a good idea (given the gun violence that we read about daily). All of these books are appropriate for fifth graders. In terms of dealing with the kids, I would be matter-of-fact and talk about it up front. I would discuss that this is a rare occasion where swearing and inappropriate behaviors (like drinking and driving) will be included in school. I stress that I trust them to “handle” it maturely (kind of like seeing nudity at a museum) and see the language and behaviors in the context of the story. I would love to hear how this turns out for you!!
