I have taught K-2nd with the bulk of my teaching experience in 1st grade. I work in an urban elementary school with over 90% of students qualifying for free and reduced lunch. My class is typically made up of 1/3 English Language Learners, mostly native Spanish speakers. My school also has a high percentage of students with mental health issues or learning disabilities, and I typically have 1/4 or 1/5 students with individual education plans.
I am very pragmatic in my teaching style. Theoretically I most closely associate myself with the Constructivist model of teaching. However, the reality of district approved curriculum, pacing pressures, and the diverse needs of my learners academically and behaviorally mean that I have to adapt my teaching style frequently.
