Ann Marie Hunter  (TpT Seller) re: Math Games for the SMARTboard - 3 Popular Games
First of all, the games are cool. I do not have a smartboard, but perhaps my colleagues would help me to try out these games on their smartboards. Hopefully, when I download it, it will be easy to see how it works. In the meantime, I will just use the paper form of the game with my students and hope that I will be able to adapt to using it with a smartboard when I get one! For the Trapezoid game, I'm wondering why you have not included non-regular trapezoids (where the sides of the trapezoids are not equal length) in your examples - I think it is an important part of the concept of trapezoid, otherwise students will think that all trapezoids are regular (as shown). Also, I think it would improve the game to include a student reflection that will bring them to see the quick way to calculate a trapezoid's area. This method is easily modelled by drawing a diagonal in the trapezoid, which shows two triangles (one right side up, the other upside down) that share the same line (the diagonal) and the same height. Then the area becomes 1/2 base1 X h, plus 1/2 base2 X h, which becomes 1/2 (base1 + base2) X height.

Hello, I just came across this website, and I am looking for reading strategies to help my daughter over the summer. I am a math teacher, and know very little about how reading strategies work. I read all the comments that people left for you, and ALL were very positive. I am very tempted to buy this binder, but I need your honest opinion. As a non-reading teacher, is this binder going to be helpful? Is is non-reading teacher friendly? My daughter will be in 6th grade next school year. Thanks

For this unit plan, do you recommend having only a class copy of each book, or did you plan on having several copies to use in small groups? I'm doing a school order and am interested in purchasing your unit plan, but I also need to purchase the books from Amazon.

I just have one copy of each book - I either project it under the document camera, or collect the kids around me as I read (I also reread each book about three times during the week it is studied). My kids are grade 5/6 and it works well for them. If your students are younger, or have higher needs, you might want to consider a few copies so they could work in small groups.

Due to the terms of use of my graphics, I can't distribute unsecured copies of the work. You could add a box to the back of the sheet to write a full summary there - as I use these in the class for students' independent reading (novels), I wanted to keep the summaries short, rather than have them write a full summary.

I guess it would depend on the maturity of your class - I used it with my grade 5/6 class and it was a perfect fit. For a grade 7 class I would expect them to finish it more quickly, and answer the questions with a high level of depth and evidence from the text to justify their thinking. They would be able to complete every step independently, allowing you to be able to work in small groups with other students.

Thank you for your answer. I am an instructional coach at my school and the classroom teacher that I was going to buy this for is very excited. However, she wants to get it now and get started as soon as school gets out (reviewing all the documents, etc). Do you think that you could just sell the ratio section separately if I go ahead and by the interactive journal right now.

In my curriculum (in Ontario), ratios is just one expectation out of over 40 in our Number Sense and Numeration strand. We relate it to fractions, and it usually just covers one lesson. For the most part, my journal entries were for the more major concepts studied, often covering 3 - 4 different lessons, or reviewing a few different expectations. I have, however, had a few people request something for ratios, so when I do a second edition of my journal (I'll be working on it over the summer), covering the journal entries from this year, I will include an entry for ratios. With my current journal, most of the journal templates are generic, so any number of them could be used to review proportional relationships.

I think they a lot of the questions would work as long as the students weren't working independently - I think they would work well as a whole group activity, during a discussion after a read aloud - as long as you were able to explain or rephrase the question.

I've used the cheap three-hole notebooks for two years with my students, and they've held up quite well (even in their desks) - they do keep them in their math binders, though. I know many people use a spiral notebook, which has a sturdier cover. If I can find a good deal on spiral notebooks, or composition books, I will get them for next year. If not, I'll stick with the notebooks.
