Ximena V. re: NUMBER THE STARS by Lois Lowry
Hello there, I just purchased this product for my class and I was very pleased with the description. I printed some pages and the quality is very hazy almost blurry! Any idea why this could be?

Hi Ximena! That's the first time I've had any mention of blurry pages. I'm sorry it's happening to you. Can you please tell me which ones are blurry? It might be a technical issue, I can't correct on my end, so TpT will be able to help, if that's the case. I'll check the packet too just to make sure nothing has happened. I'll be home around 7:30 p.m EST and will look for your message here. Thank you so much for contacting me. :)

Hi Cherilyn! You're very welcome. :) I can't tell you how many years I had been writing down ideas for prompts, but had never put a packet together. I figured there were many more teachers that did the same thing, which is why I offered this free packet to everyone. Guess what? I started another list and plan on posting them, probably in the summer when school's out. I wish I had more time! There should be 36 hours in a day! :) I really appreciate your note! :) Thank you

Hi Ruth! Thanks so much for getting back to me. The problem wasn't the links for the birds, though. My problem was that I'm not able to see any links for the topics you listed. For example, all I see is "Ireland's Birds" and I'm assuming that when you click on that you're going to one of the links you provided in your answer (http://www.irishbirdimages.com/
http://www.birdwatchireland.ie/IrelandsBirds/tabid/541/Default.aspx). I'm not able to see the links at all; just the topics. Is there a way I can get the links for each of the topics you have listed under Websites? Again, thank you for your help; I really appreciate it. :)

Ruth S.  (TpT Seller)
Hi Jane! You're very welcome! :) The links are HTML which means I turned the words into live links. Yes, if you click on the words they should take you to the website. If you copy them, then paste them in the top skinny box of your web browser where you see the links of the web pages you're on, then put your cursor after the last word, hit enter (0n a PC) or return (on a Mac) it will take you to the site.
If you'd like me to send you the links via email, I will. We can't sent things through TpT notifications, so if you give me your email address, I'll send them to you. All you'll have to do is click on them in the email and WAH LA you'll see the lovely birds of Ireland! :) I love birds and had so much fun researching them for this packet.

Hi Ruth.
I downloaded your St. Patrick's Day Ireland Mini Report and have a question regarding the websites provided for the research.

You have a section with websites listed for students to use while researching, but it only says the website name and no url address. For example, it says "Ireland's Birds" and is underlined, which I'm assuming goes to a link when clicked on. However, no url is provided.

Do you have the actual websites to use for researching? Thank you so much!
Jane :)

Hi Jane! I'm so sorry this happened! I've never had anyone mention a problem with the bird links. I pulled up the packet and both links for Ireland's birds and Irish Bird Images worked. I then sent it to my sister, who works on a PC and it works for her too. I work on a Mac so I wondered if it made a difference.
Try these links by copying/pasting them in your browser box.

Hi Ruth!

I was just re-downloading your "Idioms for Kids" activity to use again and laminate, and I happened to see my review from July, 2012. I must have accidentally given a 3.5 overall instead of a 4!! I apologize for the mistake. I never saw your question about it. I had my son on August 3, 2012, so I was a little crazy :)
Please let me know if I can correct this mistake. I apologize again. Thank you for this excellent activity! I used it in the past with an ESL student, and now I'm going to use it with a special education student I am tutoring.

Oh my!! I see you listed as DK3032, so I'm sorry I don't know your name. :) Thank you so much for contacting me, it's so sweet of you! I'm not sure, but I think you can go back to the rating and change it. If you can't, please don't worry about it. It seemed to be a mistake at the time, but 3.5 isn't a bad rating. :) I'm going to be upgrading my idiom packets using new software and some clip art, so if you get a message from TpT that I've done that, you can upload it again, free of charge, of course. I'm not sure when I'll have the time to modify them due to my really busy schedule, but I promise I will. :) Thank you so much for letting me know how you're using the idiom packet. It warms my heart to know ESL teachers are helping students better understand our often difficult expressions.
Your son was born in 2012? How time flies! I bet you're having fun with him.
Best wishes

I'm updating all of my book packets using some new software I have and adding much more to them, so when I get Woodsong finished, you'll receive a notification from TpT saying you can upload it, free of charge. Hi Stefania! There are five pages of explicit directions of how to use each page, plus websites about WWII and the author, Lois Lowry.
I explain which pages should be used before reading the book with directions of how I use them. Each page has directions at the top for students. There are also pre-reading suggestions and more. A website has an interactive map of Europe as well as other websites that enrich the unit. I hope that helps! :)

Does The Tiger Rising packet have teacher's keys?
January 22, 2014 Report inappropriate comment

Hi Martha, It has answer keys for the verb tenses, capitalization/punctuation worksheets. For many pages like similes, metaphors, there are examples of each on the worksheets. All student worksheets have directions and explanations of the activities. I use them with small groups of students to encourage collaboration and brainstorming for the best answers, that are then discussed in the larger group. This definitely encourages independent and higher level thinking.
I really appreciate your question and hope it gives you a better understanding of the activities.

Hi! I don't know your first name. Sorry! I'm so happy I can help you and other teachers. It's a way of giving back because of all the wonderful help I had in the Sellers' Forum. Back then it was a very small forum and we all got to know each other. Now it's huge and there are so many people, it's hard to keep track of everything. I just pinned your Writing Scoops to one of my main boards. http://www.pinterest.com/ruthspe/ruths-ready-to-print-worksheets-on-tpt-and-teachin/ Check on the progress by saving this board or following it so you can see who repinned it. I added "priced item" to the end of the description so buyers know it isn't free. That was what we were told to do when we first started pinning on Pinterest when the site came on the Web. I also added a little to your description because it works for me..The sentence about reluctant writers. :) You'll see what I mean.. Thank you for your comment about my homophone product. :) Keep in touch!

How do you define a noun in the posters? Thanks.
September 1, 2013 Report inappropriate comment
Ruth S.
Ruth S.  (TpT Seller)
Hi Denise... Because these are posters for grades 3 - 6, and there isn't a lot of room for the definitions on the posters due to the graphics, the definition of a noun on the poster is "a person, place or thing".

I teach students in upper grades that a noun can also be a quality, or action and can function as the subject or object of a verb, the object of a preposition or an appositive.
Hopes this helps :) Thanks for asking :)

Hi! There isn't a formal test included in the packet. The ten questions are best used as a small group assignment or as an assessment. Students are asked to respond to parts of the story using information from the story to support their answers. One question has four sentences about Maniac Magee and students must choose the sentence that's best supported with information from the story. There are also opinion questions and some connection questions. They encourage higher level thinking. Hope this helps! Thank you for asking :)

Ruth S.  (TpT Seller)
Hi Sally! There are many states that haven't aligned with the Core so I don't post them on products unless they're specifically for Common Core. My Common Core products have "Common Core' usually in the title of the packet. I've been teaching many years and I'm very familiar with the Core so my book packets are basically aligned with the Core. In fact, many of my activities align and go beyond the Core. That's why they're so popular. The Tiger Rises aligns many Core Standards for grades 4,5 6 but also has other creative activities that SHOULD be included for those grade levels. :) I'm wondering if your district is requiring you to have the standards printed on every worksheet you use? Please let me know. It would help us here on TpT if that's happening. Thanks for asking!

Hi Ann :) Many people have purchased my CC cards and I haven't hear of any problems downloading them. Because we don't handle the technical part of it, it's best to contact TpT. At the bottom of every page is a "Contact Us" button. They are VERY helpful and will figure out what happened. Be sure to give them the link of my product and tell them what happened. I'm sorry this happened to you! Ruth

Hi Ruth: I would like to ask your permission to include your wonderful non-fiction trifold template in a handbook I'm putting together. I will be presenting a seminar titled "What's New in Third Grade" sponsored by the Bureau of Education and Research and will be recommending great websites like Tpt. I would give full credit and the handbooks will not be sold separate from the seminar. Thanks in advance for your consideration. Sincerely, Cindy Merrilees www.cindymerrilees.com

Hi Cindy! I'd be honored to have my nonfiction trifold in your handbook. I love sharing my ideas and worksheets with teachers! I was a guest presenter at the NELMS (New England League of Middle Schools) at the Rhode Island Convention Center for five years. An average of six thousand people from New England, Canada and other countries attended and it was an amazing experience. They had heard about me when I was the CT State Representative for the "Weekly Reader National Teacher Advisory Board" where I served for 12 years. I was then selected to be the state rep. to appear on ABC's "Good Morning America" to represent Weekly Reader for its 65th anniversary. After my appearance I got a call saying that my great aunt had been co-founder of Weekly Reader! Somehow NASA found me and asked me to be a NASA "Students' Signatures in Space" teacher which I was for ten years or so. In 2009, I was retained as a NASA author. I wrote articles to inspire K-12 kids to pursue math, computer, science, space and technology professions. My articles were sent around the world to all NASA teachers and their students. I feel very blessed to have such a full rich life in education. :) Your offer to feature my nonfiction has sent me over the top. If there's anything I need to do, please let me know. Again, thank you!

Hi Ruth! It's Renee. I wonder if you remember me? I'll be student teaching soon and I mentioned you in my blog. We were having a discussion for a while, but I was never notified that you responded so I'm sorry about that. You had suggested I choose Hoot for my novel unit. unfortunately, one of the other teachers in the school is doing that book so I have decided to do Holes. If you offer still stands could you send me the packet for that book? I'm so excited to be student teaching soon! Even though my unit won't be taught until October I'm getting started on it! Thanks for all of your help and suggestions!

Hi! The packet is designed to encourage groups or pairs of students to discuss the activities collaboratively and then agree on the best responses. Here are a few in the packet. You might be able to tell whether it's appropriate for your 7th grade students. "How does Santiago's pride motivate his desire to rise above or transcend the forces of nature?" Another asks to describe his coping mechanisms as the themes of courage and survival are woven throughout the novel. Another asks students to interpret a quotation on the fourth day of the narrative. Another asks how Hemingway uses religious symbolism in the novel.

I'm planning to modify this packet over the summer by adding other activities. It currently has 13 pages of student activities but I have more I'd like to include. If you follow me you'll be notified by email when I've modified it. Also, if you purchase it now and I make the modifications over the summer, you'll be notified by TeachersPayTeachers that I've made changes and you'll be able to download the new packet at no cost.
Thank you so much for asking! Have a great summer!

Thanks! Have seen Speaking of Speech but will check out the TpT shop - I see how you abbreviate that : ].

I am a Pinterest addict and will check out that link, too.

I am getting excited with all the resources I have been collecting. Organizing them so I can know what's where would be a good way to spend my time - after I gather a few more.

I do have a teacher/SLP question for you. When I was in grad school I heard so many complaints from other students about how bad teachers were expecting SLPs to cover their classes when they did therapy in the classroom, resentful, difficult to work with, etc.

I have only had one teacher - who was a former (burned out) SLP who told me to use oral motor exercises with one of her students - which is not evidence based - but I humored her and one teacher who frequently didn't want her kids excused from class to come to Speech.

Every other teacher I have worked with has been more than accommodating and helpful. We have a great team and sometimes kids need to miss Speech b/c of testing and sometimes I have asked to pull kids to make up times and it always seemed to work out. Teachers are great about updating me about where they see their kids improving and needing extra help.

My question is: As much as everyone - myself included, hates IEP meetings, they are a necessary part of school. The ESE teacher at my school schedules meetings for my speech &/or language students who receive other services - ESE Collaborative Teaching, OT, PT, Varying Exceptionalities, Supportive Behavior, for a weekday our Staffing Specialist will be there. I schedule IEP meetings for my S/L only students. Do you have suggestions of what I could include on a little form (which I would make cute of course) I could give my teachers to fill out to let me know what times during their days they prefer to have meetings? Some want to attend when their kids are at specials, some guard that time, etc.

I don't want to open a can of worms b/c to get a sub for coverage for their classes, I need to have meetings scheduled for at least 1/2 day, which typically is 3 which shouldn't be a problem. I want my teachers to be happy but can't promise times to them if parents need to change the time, or I need to schedule meetings so I have 3 in a row.

Appreciate any input you have to offer and any other insights about working with SLPs, what works best for your kids, etc.

My personal/professional goal this summer is to get my lessons organized so I can be ahead of things, at least for a few months. May see if I can work some of your prompts into a SMART Board activity. They think that if they are writing on the SMART Board that it's not work. : ]

Buyer re: Common Core ELA Informational Text Rl.5.1 - Rl.5.10 POSTERS
Hi Ruth,

These are nicely done and will make great classroom resources. I love the monsters and am debating adding some monsters to the speech room this year.

I don't know if you were aware that on ELA Literacy RI.5.8 the sentence, "We can identify the reasons and evidence that supports the point(s)" should read, "We can identify the reasons and evidence that support the point(s)" because support describes reasons (plural) and evidence (plural when used with 'reasons').

I hope you take this as intended, as a constructive critique.

Hope your upcoming school year is rewarding!

Hi Sandra! The vocabulary is appropriate. There are just a couple of words like wrench, orchestra, volley (ball player) they might find difficult. Other than that, the sentences aren't complex and the words are common words that should be familiar to them. If they can identify nouns and verbs, they should be able to select the prepositions. If you purchase the packet, let me know how it works for your grade level. If it doesn't, let me know and I can create another game for you on a lower level and I'll send it to you for free. :) Thanks for asking!

Hi!
No, sorry it doesn't. I created this assessment before the Common Core was "born". I'm very familiar with the Standards which is why I included it in my updated product description. Is your district requiring that the CC Standards be listed for each section of a lesson/assessment? It would be helpful for us to know. We've recently learned that many states aren't aligning with the Core at this point. Thanks so much for your question! :)

Hi Renee! Your blog is wonderful. I wish I had kept a journal of my thoughts when I was student teaching. Oh!! I LOVE Hoot! It's such a great contemporary story that demonstrates how kids can make a difference about things they believe in and how they can approach adults to let their voices be heard. Of course, I love all the other books you mentioned having used them in class for many years but I'd recommend Hoot. You'd love the packet I designed for it. It has everything you need to teach it and most of the activities are aligned with the Common Core. Also included in the packet are websites that you can use as extension activities.
Can you download zipped files? My Hoot packet is 42 pages long and I think it would be best if I zipped it. Let me know if you'd like it and I'll send it today. I won't be home until later this afternoon so just let me know what you've decided.

I wondered how many sheets this bloom ball requires. Most instructions I've seen say to use 12 sheets of the template. This seems quite large. Can you use fewer sheets and still get a similar project outcome? (Guess you can tell I didn't do we'll in geometry in school and there are good reasons for my not teaching math). :)
Thanks!

Hi! In order to form a complete bloom ball, yes, you do need 12 templates. I've included templates for small and large Bloom balls and placed them so there are four templates per page (small size) and two per page for the larger ones. I did this to help save paper. :)
By the way, the kids learn very quickly how to attach them. i was amazed the first time i used my packet with them :) I guess they'll all do well in geometry. :) It wasn't my strongest subject in high school because there was a shortage of math teachers at the time, so we had a history teacher teaching it!

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I've been an elementary and middle school teacher for over 25 years in Connecticut. I also served on the Weekly Reader National Teacher Advisory Board as the Connecticut State Rep and appeared on "Good Morning, America" in 1993, to celebrate the 65th anniversary of Weekly Reader. I worked closely with the other state representatives and Weekly Reader's editorial, graphic arts and marketing departments. I was a NASA/Lockheed Martin Mission Systems "Student Signatures in Space" teacher for ten years. My students, Board of Ed, staff and others signed NASA posters that accompanied astronauts during space missions aboard the space shuttles. One of the posters was signed by all students in our school, teachers, parents and the Board of Ed. It returned from space, and was hung in the school's Media Center.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I believe that learning must be a personal and exciting experience for students. I have fun teaching and believe that humor is an essential part of the classroom. A teacher must be able to laugh at herself and with her students. I'm a firm believer in Gardner's "Multiple Intelligences" theory that all children have different strengths and learning styles. To accommodate my students, I integrate art, music and hands on activities into all of my lessons. It's essential that students learn how to make connections, predict outcomes and use their analytical skills and strategies in order to comprehend text. My students work cooperatively in small groups to share ideas and to brainstorm for answers. They constantly use self assessment tools to track their comprehension, skills and strategies.

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

For four years, I was a guest presenter at the NELMS (New England League of Middle Schools) convention in Providence, Rhode Island, where I taught educators from New England, Canada and other countries about my innovative projects for grades K-12. I'm an avid writer and have written and edited a variety of educational articles for local newspapers. I also edited a 250 page manuscript that will be published in France this fall. Recently, I wrote articles and created activities about various space topics for NASA's "Student Signatures in Space" program. They were written on the elementary, middle and high school levels based on the National Science Standards. The articles were published by NASA and sent to teachers and students around the world. I'm currently finishing two historical fiction novels for kids, ages 9 - 14. It's a pleasure to be able to share my original lesson plans that I've developed over the years with other educators.
