I have tried opening and downloading the presentation a few times and on a few different computers. I keep having the same issue. The powerpoint is there but i cant see any of the images ( with expetion of the 1st slide). I even had my tech department at school try to fix the problem and they were not successful. Do you have any idea what can be wrong?

Hi Denisse! I'm so sorry you're having problems downloading the presentation. I've had many teachers download it and haven't heard anything like this. Have you asked TpT? Their tech team is great! It might turn out to be a problem on their end. I'm not sure if buyers contact TpT like we do, but at the bottom of each TpT page, there is a "contact us" button. Click on it and you'll have options like "report a bug" and others that you can choose. Explain it just as you did to me. Please let me know what happens, okay?

Hi Ruth! I'm so glad that you read my blog. You are so kind and generous! I am in the process of deciding what book to have my students read in my 6th grade placement in the fall. These are some of the main ones that I am debating between: Hoot, Homecoming, Number the Stars, The Hatchet, and Holes. Any suggestions? I haven't decided what I would like from your store yet, but I will get back to you on that! My email is radair@nmu.edu. Thanks again! -Renee

Hi Renee! Your blog is wonderful. I wish I had kept a journal of my thoughts when I was student teaching. Oh!! I LOVE Hoot! It's such a great contemporary story that demonstrates how kids can make a difference about things they believe in and how they can approach adults to let their voices be heard. Of course, I love all the other books you mentioned having used them in class for many years but I'd recommend Hoot. You'd love the packet I designed for it. It has everything you need to teach it and most of the activities are aligned with the Common Core. Also included in the packet are websites that you can use as extension activities.
Can you download zipped files? My Hoot packet is 42 pages long and I think it would be best if I zipped it. Let me know if you'd like it and I'll send it today. I won't be home until later this afternoon so just let me know what you've decided.
Great meeting you! Ruth

Hi Rvetancourt! I didn't design it specifically to align with the Common Core, however, it is listed in Grade 1 Reading: Foundational Skills (Phonological Awareness). I've been teaching syllabication for many years, thus the reason I created it. :) Hope this helps!

Jen re: Bloom Ball Reports
Hi!
I wondered how many sheets this bloom ball requires. Most instructions I've seen say to use 12 sheets of the template. This seems quite large. Can you use fewer sheets and still get a similar project outcome? (Guess you can tell I didn't do we'll in geometry in school and there are good reasons for my not teaching math). :)
Thanks!
March 28, 2013 Report inappropriate comment
Ruth S.
Ruth S.  (TpT Seller)
Hi! In order to form a complete bloom ball, yes, you do need 12 templates. I've included templates for small and large Bloom balls and placed them so there are four templates per page (small size) and two per page for the larger ones. I did this to help save paper. :)
By the way, the kids learn very quickly how to attach them. i was amazed the first time i used my packet with them :) I guess they'll all do well in geometry. :) It wasn't my strongest subject in high school because there was a shortage of math teachers at the time, so we had a history teacher teaching it!
Thanks for asking!

Hi Buchani. Many, many teachers have purchased this packet from me and haven't told me anything like this. Because you purchased it, you can re-download it again and see what happens. If not, contact teacherspayteachers by clicking on "contact us" at the bottom of any page and submit a ticket to them. They're VERY good about solving technical problems for everyone. I've heard that it sometimes can be the printer software that causes these types of problems but it's best to check with the technical people on TpT. You might also try printing it on a different printer and see if that works. I'm sorry you're having this problem. Let me know what happens, okay?

Sorry I am just now getting back to you. I lived in CT until I was 13 when my parents moved me to FL for 9 months, then to NC for 3 years and then back to FL where they continue to live. My husband and I moved to NC 13 years ago and love it. As I mentioned, I grew up on Pistapaug Road in Northford. My famiily owned that whole block of land so my great grandmother, grandmother, aunts, etc. lived close by. They all still live there. We don't get back to the area very often since my grandmotehr died a few years ago. It's too far to drive and I didn't maintain close relationships with my aunts/unlces & cousins. I went to school at William Douglas and Stanley Williams and then to Northford Intermediate. I left the area as a freshman at NorthBranford HS in the fall. We really love it in NC.

Hi Sue! Thanks so much for getting back to me. The town is probably just as you remember it. Not much changes here due to all the farmland. Much of it is held in trust so no developers can come in and change the landscape. I know exactly where your land is. There's a new elementary school on Route 80 and is called Jerome Harrison. We were hit really hard with that latest blizzard. Town plows stopped working at 5:30 p.m because they just couldn't handle it. Two days later, a farmer came down the road driving a payloader and dug our road out. There was about 40 inches of snow but the drifts were up to 9 feet. Some people in town had to jump out their windows because they couldn't exit through their doors because of the snow. I have a friend who lives in Durham, NC and loves it. She grew up in Cheshire with me. She works at Duke U. She's trying to convince us to move down there. Are you teaching? Great meeting you!

Ruth S.  (TpT Seller)
Hi Rdoud! I remember you told me my Snowball Math lesson was the only time your students would have snowballs because you're in Florida! :) That is one of the cutest responses I've had! Bloom ball reports can easily be modified for second graders. The activities in the biography report I included asks students to write their birthday on one circle and draw a picture. Another one is to write a sibling's or relative's name and draw a picture. Another one is to write something they love to do, or someone they love.. And then there are the questions "Who feels..." (write three adjectives to describe their feelings like sad, happy) "Who Gives..." Answers could be "Who gives a lot of attention to their puppy" Who loves to give hugs..." And one that asks where they'd like to visit... Another is "My dream is to ...." (examples are: To be President, to be an actor, etc. Another one is "My Favorite Activity".On all of the templates, they would write and draw pictures. The fiction book report that I included could be modified a bit but I've known second grade teachers who've used it. Thank you so much for asking! I'm a bit late replying because we're now in the middle of a blizzard and we lost power for a couple of hours, but it came back on! YAY!! If you want some snow, I'll upload some to you! :)

Hi Eve! It's so ironic you asked me that question. I've been modifying my Bloom packet all week. I'll be posting it tomorrow or tomorrow night. If, by any chance, you purchased it already, you will get a message from TpT telling you it's been revised. At that point, you can download it again, and there's no charge. I'm using new software so the entire packet has a different look and the revised Bloom's verbiage has been added. Thanks for asking!

I am interested in the Number the Stars packet, but do not see where there are assessments aligned with the common core. Is that part of the packet? Thanks. Lynn
December 18, 2012 Report inappropriate comment
Ruth S.
Ruth S.  (TpT Seller)
Hi Lynn. The worksheets in my Number the Stars packet are designed to be used with small groups with each small group working collaboratively to "dig deep" into the novel, to find the best answers. I always require they support their answers with evidence from the novel. Once the groups are finished, I have a spokesperson from each group share the groups answers with the large group. This initiates wonderful, thought provoking discussions.

I uploaded this packet to TpT before the Common Core was adopted by the states, so it's not listed as being CC aligned, however, checking the Core standards and hearing from coworkers and teachers who have used the sheets, most activities are aligned. Formal assessments with answers aren't included if that's what you're looking for. Hope this helps! Thank you for asking. :)

What is supposed to go into the second blank snowball on the line? For example, the first snowball says present, then the second snowball is where you would put absent, then there is a line to a 3rd snowball. What do you have the students do in the 3rd snowball?
Thanks!

Hi Khenn! Thank you for downloading my Snowball Antonyms! On the first worksheet, the first snowball is "present". The kids cut and paste the words "absent" and "past" in the snowballs next to the snowball that has the word "present". Those are the two antonyms for the word "present". If you look at the sheet, they're listed horizontally. The next word is "wide". The kids should paste the words "narrow"and "slender" in the two snowballs next to the snowball that has the word "wide". The answers are in capital letters on my instruction sheet.
Hope that helps! If not, let me know!

I didn't include third grade but you never know with technical things what happens. That being said, I think all of your third graders would benefit from surveying family members or someone they know who was in the military. What I'd like to do is send you the whole packet for free and let you decide what you want to use. If you give me an email address, I'll send it. There's no way to do that on TpT. Hi Mecomeaux I'm so sorry you're having problems printing my packet! I've had many, many teachers purchase this packet and no one has contacted me about any problems. What you should do is contact TpT and tell them the problem you're having. On each TeachersPayTeachers page, at the very bottom, is a "Contact Us" tab. Click on that and it will ask you to create a ticket. TpT is very prompt in replying to any questions. Explain the problem you're having. Copy and paste this URL into the note you write to them. It will save them time looking for the packet.

I'm sure they'll let me know if there's a problem with it and I'll upload it again. Keep in touch, ok? I really want you and your students to have fun putting these together! :)

Hi maritchie! There are no answer keys for this packet of worksheets. When I use my novel packet worksheets with my students, I have them work in small groups to brainstorm for the answers. They're required to support their answers with information from the text. When all groups are finished, we discuss their answers and they, with my guidance, decide which ones are the best. Hope this helps. Thank you for your inquiry.

Do the students sign the cards? Then what do they do with them? It looks like some students wouuld be filling out the same cards all year long? Any consequences? I suppose these questions are answered in the explaination after purchase, right?

Hi Ptucker22 :) Yes, the instructions of what the kids do once they sign them and how I use them during parent conferences are in the packet. For those who continually repeat the same behavior, intervention is suggested by including parents. There's also a suggestion about the list. Hope this helps!
Thanks for asking. :)

Hi Melhartman! Our school is Monday - Friday too. When I created this a couple of years ago, I decided to give the kids a breather on Friday, but each year the group is different. After your request, I added Friday and I'll probably use it this year! I'm not going to post it on TpT right away because I have so much going on. If you'd like me to send it to you, give me your email address in this Q/A area and I'll sent it right away. It's good to use it right at the beginning of school. :) Thanks!

Hi Ruth,

I just wanted to say thank you again for suggesting the Pinterest collaborative boards. I have spent the weekend researching these boards on the TpT seller's forum, and I am now a member of quite a few of them. It's exciting to see a few repins here and there. Thank you again!

Hi Chris!
I'm so glad you researched the boards! My sales have soared since I've been on Pinterest. Here's what I recently did. I created a board of my own and I titled it Ruth's Ready to Print Worksheets. From now on, I'm going to pin all of my products to that board first, then repin them to the boards I have permission to pin on. I started thinking about how I could draw people to just MY products because when they they're on my Pinterest page, they see tons of boards and wouldn't know where to look for only my products. I also "branded" my picture (I learned this in a course I took) and made it the permanent cover of that board so people would recognize me each time they're on my boards or if they're on someone else's boards. It's all a matter of recognition of blog buttons and pictures. When you run your mouse over one of your pin boards, you'll see a sign that says "Edit Cover". You can choose a cover you want that will stay there permanently. You might want to choose something that will be your brand to do this.
I noticed you have repins on your products! Congratulations! Also, to get more followers, click on the number of followers I have at the top of my page, and you'll see all of mine. You can follow any of them.Just follow them and they'll check your boards out. You can follow any teacher's followers.
I generally try to see if they look like educators by checking out the small thumbnails next to their pictures or you can click on their pinboards. I used to follow everyone but why should I if they're not teachers who will purchase from me? :)

You'll see my new board in the upper left hand corner with my picture. :)

Have fun!
Ruth

One more thing.. If you're going to create a pinboard of your own, I wouldn't title it with anything that refers to selling on TpT. I'm not sure about Pinterset TOS agreement, that's why I titled it more generically... Ready to print worksheets..

Hi Kimberly,
No, sorry they're not. My products are created using Mac software Pages and converted to PDF. I also use Microsoft Word but it isn't always stable in terms of margins and font, so when teachers purchase them, they often have to fix margins, etc. when they upload them. What templates do you want to customize? Let me know and I'll see what I can come up with.

Hi Kmcundiff. Thanks for asking! This packet was designed before the Standards were created however, I've always covered the Common Core literature "standards" in my classes for years. I have high expectations, so some of the worksheets go beyond the CC standards. These worksheets are more appropriate for 4,5 6th grades.. Many of the worksheets can be adapted to fit the standards and different ability levels. My teammates and other teachers have used this packet for a number of years and said they'll still use it now that the Common Core has been adopted. I hope this helps!

Hi Ruth!
I don’t think my original response to your response of 6-11 went through. I was at a workshop when I responded and then I was asked to “sign in.” After I signed in, it went to the home page so I will try again to respond!

Once again, thank you so much for your lessons. I will try to video them when I use them in class and send them to you. My home email is rsd2870@aol.com (which is the email I used for TpT) and my school email is williams.rebecca.c@muscogee.k12.ga.us. Either one is fine although I do have to say that in the summer I don’t check my school email as often!

As far as the court cases, they are the usual suspects – Marshall and enlarging the power of the federal government, civil rights cases, 1st Amendment cases, and criminal rights/punishment cases. I’m sure I’m leaving out some of the random cases that don’t fall under the above but my concern when I taught US History was that very often Supreme Court cases were not covered except for the very obvious ones like Brown v Bd of Ed.

Hope this email goes through!

I decided to move forward and revamp the packet, instead of sending it to you in bits and pieces. I'll send it to you at your AOL address. I'm also on AOL. I'll put the name of the packet in the subject line so you'll know it's me. :) I'm going to be really busy tomorrow and Sunday, so if it's okay with you, I'll send it mid week. If you need the original packet right away, let me know, okay?

Re: Articles of Confederation or the Constitution

Thank you Ruth! How generous you are to share your lesson. Starting the 2012-13 school year, I will be teaching only Am Gov with the exception of my US History in Film class which is an elective. I hate to say that I am giving myself a “breather” by teaching 9th Grade Am Gov but after years of grading essays (APUSH) and getting discouraged by having to literally “teach to the test” (Georgia’s End-of-Course Test) in US History I do feel as if I will have more freedom in my classroom. Also, since I know from teaching US History that about 25% of the EOCT will be questions covering topics that are covered in Am Gov (including several court cases), I feel as if I can contribute in preparing my students for the US History EOCT by putting emphasis on those areas. The subject EOCTs will be 20% of their final grade starting next year so it is essential that students remember what they learned the previous year in Am Gov. From experience, I know that most of my US History students would be ok on questions concerning the three branches of government and pretty much the Constitution (mainly the Bill of Rights), but from there on it went pretty much downhill. I would even get blank faces on the impact of John Marshall and judicial review so you can imagine the reaction when I brought up Locke, Rousseau, and Montesquieu (even with my AP students).

Also in the 2012-13 school year, a major part of our evaluation will be how and to what extent teachers use differentiated instruction. Your profile suggested to me that your lessons would follow that instructional method.

How do I receive your lesson? Will it be sent to my email on file at TpT?

Once again, thank you! Becky Williams

Becky, I know what it's like to correct all those essays and teach to the test. All creativity is pushed aside and we drill, drill, drill. We have to use the same questioning techniques, the same buzz words, etc. It's very discouraging. I'm glad next year will give you a break from that. I absolutely love teaching American government! After I responded to your first message, I went to the Web and found some other websites you might be able to use. I'll send them to you with the packet. I was also going to add more to the A of C and C packet this summer so I'll send you the new activities in a few days. We TpT teachers modify and add to our packages in the summer when we have more time. Unfortunately, we can't send files via TpT messages, so if you give me your email address, home or school, I'll send the packet to you right away. I also have some ideas for your classes next year that I created when I was the CT Rep. for the Weekly Reader National Teacher Advisory Board. It's an American government activity that I presented at the NELMS (New England League of MIddle Schools) convention four years in a row. Harcourt Brace send a representative to my class to observe the project. The HB woman loved it so much, she came back for the rest of the week and got involved in a student group!
Have a relaxing summer!

Are the Maniac Magee Activity Cards organized by chapter or sections of the book?
June 10, 2012 Report inappropriate comment
Ruth S.
Ruth S.  (TpT Seller)
Hi Lori! The cards can be used while reading Maniac Magee or completed after they're finished. They're not in order by chapter. I usually assign an activity after they've read a chapter. For instance after they read the chapter about Cobble's Knot, I have them do the activity on Card #9 that asks why they think Maniac really wanted to untie the knot. When they're finished writing the responses, they share them in small groups. A more generic activity asks them to write a rap about Maniac and present it to the class.
i give a set of the cards to each small group so they have them handy as they read the book. They can flip through them and select an activity they want to do. I like to give my students choices and this is a great way to do it. Oh! I also tell them they can do an activity only once. Hope this helps. All my coworkers love these cards if that helps :)

rsd2870 re: Articles of Confederation or The Constitution?
This is a question re: Articles of Confederation or The Constitution lesson. Would this be an appropriate intro lesson for 9th grade Am Govt? My school is a magnet which draws students from the whole school district. Although they are not all "Gifted" they do have to pass an admissions test, references from middle school, and have a "B" average in middle school. Having also taught AP US History, I know that many (too many really) high school students are unfamiliar with the A of C and thus the connection to our present govt. I would appreciate your response. Thanks! Becky Williams

Hi Becky... I sure know what you mean about high school students being unfamiliar with the A of C! This was something brought up at a district wide history meeting a year ago and I was shocked that so little was being covered. Because of your detailed message to me, I'd like to send my packet to you via email for free. I think it would be great as an introductory lesson. I've included three excellent websites that your students can refer to. I've included KWHL charts for the A of C and the Constitution and I think you'll be amazed by how much they don't know. I was. In fact, some of my students couldn't even fill in the "What I Know' section. Very sad. (Can you tell I love teaching American history?) :)

Hi Amanda, A few could be considered "generic" like the plot worksheet that requires brief summaries of the beginning, middle and end of the story. But for the most part, they’re designed specifically for Holes. For instance, the theme worksheet has themes from the story. I require they find information in the story that supports their responses. I pick and choose which ones I want to use as assessments. It might differ year to year depending on the group of kids. TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I've been an elementary and middle school teacher for over 25 years in Connecticut. I also served on the Weekly Reader National Teacher Advisory Board as the Connecticut State Rep and appeared on "Good Morning, America" in 1993, to celebrate the 65th anniversary of Weekly Reader. I worked closely with the other state representatives and Weekly Reader's editorial, graphic arts and marketing departments. I was a NASA/Lockheed Martin Mission Systems "Student Signatures in Space" teacher for ten years. My students, Board of Ed, staff and others signed NASA posters that accompanied astronauts during space missions aboard the space shuttles. One of the posters was signed by all students in our school, teachers, parents and the Board of Ed. It returned from space, and was hung in the school's Media Center.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I believe that learning must be a personal and exciting experience for students. I have fun teaching and believe that humor is an essential part of the classroom. A teacher must be able to laugh at herself and with her students. I'm a firm believer in Gardner's "Multiple Intelligences" theory that all children have different strengths and learning styles. To accommodate my students, I integrate art, music and hands on activities into all of my lessons. It's essential that students learn how to make connections, predict outcomes and use their analytical skills and strategies in order to comprehend text. My students work cooperatively in small groups to share ideas and to brainstorm for answers. They constantly use self assessment tools to track their comprehension, skills and strategies.

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

For four years, I was a guest presenter at the NELMS (New England League of Middle Schools) convention in Providence, Rhode Island, where I taught educators from New England, Canada and other countries about my innovative projects for grades K-12. I'm an avid writer and have written and edited a variety of educational articles for local newspapers. I also edited a 250 page manuscript that will be published in France this fall. Recently, I wrote articles and created activities about various space topics for NASA's "Student Signatures in Space" program. They were written on the elementary, middle and high school levels based on the National Science Standards. The articles were published by NASA and sent to teachers and students around the world. I'm currently finishing two historical fiction novels for kids, ages 9 - 14. It's a pleasure to be able to share my original lesson plans that I've developed over the years with other educators.
