Hi Ryan
I just finished up grad school and am stepping into my 7th grade science classroom next month. I purchased several of your downloads while doing my internship. With that said, money is super tight right now. Are you planning on having any sales for your Unit plan bundle that is 100 bucks? Thanks for your time and the effort you have made to put this together. Smile On Chad Rentz

Dear Chad Rentz,

Thank you again and best wishes on the upcoming year. I plan on putting it in the TpT sale. I can also adjust the price for you whenever you need. Let me know when your interested in purchasing and I can drop the price to $49.99 (free shipping of an 8GB flashdrive) for a short period of time. I don't want to leave the price there all day because it confused buyers but a few hours is fine. I've been working all summer and it's full of some nice improvements. Just send me a message.

Thank you again.

Hi there,
I am getting ready to return to the classroom after a 9 year break! My classroom will be a 7th grade only Science class. We are trying to align the courses with NGSS and see that yours does that and I LOVE that it will help me focus my lessons.

Am I able to pick and choose the units I will need in order to make it easier to move through the enormous amount of fantastic information you have? Also, I am using a Smartboard so I am wondering how your curriculum works with that tech?

Thanks tons!

Dear Ellen,

Welcome back and best wishes. I hope I can help. I don't use Smartboard technology per say, but you will find you don't really need it. An LCD projector, PowerPoint, Word, and an internet connection is all you will need. The PowerPoints are really well organized and in my opinion much better. Seventh is perfect, as the curriculum is 5-8. I loop my 6th and 7th grade so the bulk of the curriculum is geared for those grades. The harder 8th grade materials can be edited a bit to be made easier, and the 5th grade material will still have use. As far as pricing, bundles etc. You can purchase the entire curriculum for $99 (20 full units), just the Earth $75, and Just Physical $50. The Physical is mostly the 8th grade material. If you have an idea of what you wanted to teach I could make recommendations. I also sell individual units but the bundles are a better deal. If you want to see an entire unit please let me know which one. I'm teaching the following this September in the seventh grade.

In order
Water Molecule Unit
Rivers Lakes and Water Quality
Astronomy Topics Unit
Geology Topics Unit
Weather and Climate Unit

The next year (6th and 7th again)
Science Skills
Weathering, Soil Science, Ice Ages, Glaciers
Botany Unit
Taxonomy and Classification
Human Body Systems and Health Topics Unit.

Hope this was helpful. If you visit my story you should find the options at the top of the screen. I can also send you my curriculum guide if you want to email me. Thank you again for your interest.

Sincerely,

Dear Karen,

Thanks again. Most of the curriculum will work in the 6th. I loop my 6th and 7th graders so the bulk of the curriculum are for those grades. Five units are my more difficult ones and ones that I run in the 8th grade. The easier 5th grade units AlAlso work in the 6th. I'll send my curriculum guide later tonight if email me. Thanks again.

I wanted to know how to differentiate between the grade levels? I may need 6th grade, and maybe 4th. Do you have a 4th grade curriculum (NGSS)? Thanks Karen M.
July 16, 2014 Report inappropriate comment

Ryan Murphy  (TpT Seller)
Dear Karen,

Thanks for the question. I don't have a 4th grade curriculum as I teach 5-8 and designed the curriculum around those grade levels. My 5th grade material is life science / environment / ecology based and could work in the 4th if you have a stronger group. Each unit does have a modified homework bundle for those students who need it. The units work well for high and low the way they are. I supply notes for those student who need them and that is enough to keep the group the together. For your superstars their are embedded academic links and optional more advanced videos that they can explore on their own. The homework bundle has a trickle down effect where your stronger students are able to grasp some of the difficult parts and then share that information down the line. I run the review games in small groups and the students cooperate well. Hope this was helpful, if you have specific questions please let me know. I have to pick up my kids from camp but will be back later tonight. Thanks again.

Hey Ryan,

I am interested in your lessons but where as I teach in Tennessee we have a different set of standards for our 8th grade level.

I have to teach Atomic Theory, Classification, and Matter.

I would love to get your physical science bundle but substitute Classification and Taxonomy for Laws of motion... Would this be a possibility?

Thanks.

Did you need anything else in the Life Sciences or Earth Sciences as I don't mind adding things onto the flashdrive. Feel free to let me know. It's been a very slow day on TpT.

Hello, I am interested in your products. However, I'm not sure which to purchase. I am a new teacher, just hired to teach physical science to 9th graders. I was initially just looking for an extensive bank of assessment questions, when I saw that you have powerpoints plus assessments. Ideally, I would like to purchase entire curriculum including unit tests and quizzes along with power points for a traditional high school physical science course which is basically one semester of basic chemistry and one semester of basic physics.
What do you suggest?

Dear Ronald Crider,

Thanks for the question. The entire curriculum is middle school. I teach 5-8 and the curriculum is designed for those grades. The 8th grade units (6 total) are more difficult and I took a lot of negative feedback that they were too difficult for MS. I then made the 8th grades units 8-10. The work real well for your middle of the road 9th and 10th grade classes. They are challenging but my 8th graders do well with them. If you have any other questions please let me know. Thanks again.

Hi! I am amazed at all of your presentations! These will come in handy with my 3rd grade units! I am a teacher in Birmingham, AL. and I'm trying to get a postcard exchange going. This is one of the places I'm trying to spread the word. Would you mind spreading the word to any teachers you think may be interested in doing this?

This is a postcard exchange for elementary classrooms! Your class will be responsible for sending out 49 postcards from your state to the other state classrooms in the group and in turn your class will receive 49 postcards (1 from each state). This is an amazing way to integrate maps and globes! Please share with any teachers from other states that you might know that would be interested!

Is this a combination of Physical, Life and Earth Science? Does it include all the lessons you have offered separately?

Thank you in advance,

How do you know where to stop each day?
June 5, 2014 Report inappropriate comment

Ryan Murphy  (TpT Seller)
Dear eastchain

Thanks for the question, It depends on class length, example -blocked classes vs single periods. I advance from the first slide and look at the roadmap / PowerPoint to plan for upcoming activities. A days lesson may be some notes, review, video, and small activity. I have placed several larger class long activities such as the bear eating monsters, beaks, and others spread throughout. The only real tricky part is pacing through so you don't reach a large activity with not enough time left to pull it off. You can always skip around a bit on these cases, go back to a skipped video, or have the students work on the homework. Then run the larger activity the next day. Hope this was helpful, time and pace is difficult to suggest / include as their is little consistency between school schedules for everyone out there. Thank you again, if you let me know where you are and how long your classes are I can give you some more detailed and specific instructions. I'm on the bus with students headed home from NYC but will be at the computer this evening.

Thank you

This message is intended to be "eyes only", but I am not sure whether this is immediately posted prior to your review. That said;
I respect your work and have used your resources frequently this year. I very much appreciate that you make your materials available to all of us. I am currently using your Scientific Method lesson, which is fantastic when teaching about the importance of objective writing/analysis. I am also going through your Part V Environment slides and am incredibly irritated by the lack of objectivity. Our kids deserve to receive fair and unbiased material, not to be offered information that clearly serves a specific agenda. I can't properly express in a comment box how incredibly disappointed and angry I am that you are not able to provide facts without clouding them with your personal opinions. There are so many kids whose parents aren't able to provide alternate views, and are not exposed to any other perspectives. I don't expect you to receive this with enthusiasm, but I do ask that you re-consider offering such biased lessons. You come across as incredibly out of touch to those who live in rural or industrial parts of the country. Respect the kids enough to allow them to weigh various 'sides' and decide for themselves whether something is good or bad. Please stick to the facts.

Dear Kendra,

Thank you for the feedback and not posting the message as a review. I will consider all that you described. I will also describe in the description that this lesson is a kind of "call to action" about our treatment of the environment without the alternative views which are bombarded 24/7 through the media. My agenda without doubt is embedded within this lesson and I have no problems doing so when it is wellness and sustainability. I will work this weekend on adding some statistics about the current state of the environment and the decline of every biological and life sustaining system on the planet. The kids deserving more was the basis for getting this lesson out there. Thank you again for your purchase and sorry this lesson bundle was rift causing.

Dear Susan P,

Thanks for contacting me. I run the Matter, Energy, and the Envs. Unit in the late fall of the 8th grade year. The energy transfer lesson is in Part III in forms of energy. If you email me at ryemurf@gmail.com I can send you the entire unit to look over / examine the standards included. I need your email as I can't send to your TpT username.

Other 8th grade units are the Laws of Motion Unit, Atoms and Periodic Table, Cellular Biology, DNA and Genetics. Human Body and Taxonomy are also challenging enough for 8th graders. The entire unit is addressed for 8th graders. Thank you for your question. I hope was this helpful.

Dear Lindsay,

I'll have to check that post. I'll send you my entire human body unit. The nervous system is clearly marked and the notes and homework are broken up by system. I need your email address as I can't send the unit to a TpT username. Thank you again for your patience.

Update:

Dear Lindsay,

Thanks again. I checked the post and it seems to be okay. I'm worried that you went straight to Part B and hate the lesson. Part B starts off with brain games, observation skills, moves into encoding, learning, Parts of the brain, senses, and ends with lobes of the brain. It is really a lot of fun and I hope you and your students will enjoy it. Part A is more standard / not as active. I'd still like to send you the entire unit. Best wishes.

Thanks for contacting me. I'll send you my matter energy and the environment entire unit. It's easier to send the whole thing as the file is too large to send through gmail as an attachment and I pay for a service each month that can send large digital files. You do need to email me at ryemurf@gmail.com so I can send the unit to your email address. I can't send the file to a TpT username. If you still encounter a problem please let me know. I can send most of the word / .doc files as attachments. Thank you again for your patience.

I am not a formal teacher; I homeschool my daughter. I bought the Science Murf and thought that I bought the whole ball of wax. I wasn't aware that in addition to this purchase, I need to buy the actual slides, curriculum and worksheets for each section. If I am not "reading" this correctly, please let me know what I'm missing. I have found some of the materials required for each section that are free, but most of them are an additional cost. I really hope that I'm just missing something...

Dear Kendra French,

Thank you for contacting me. You shouldn't have to purchase anything else. The curriculum purchase will contain an enormous amount of material and will not require any additional purchases. I'll check my sales this afternoon after school and send the curriculum download link to your email. There was a short period during the fall when I accidentally uploaded a preview folder in I believe the Geology Topics Unit of the curriculum for a few days. I wonder if you purchased during that time. The issue has been corrected. I can also mail you a flash drive. Thank you again for your purchase and patience and please email me at ryemurf@gmail.com as I am having difficulty finding your email address as TpT usernames and real names don't always match.

If you could send me your email address or other information such as the order number or close estimate of the time of purchase I'll be able to send the curriculum for download. I can't send the download link to a TpT username and require an email address. Thank you again

Ryan: I am a fellow seller on TPT and I noticed that you said you found a way to get your PowerPoints on a digital download and I was wondering if your files were over the 200 MB limit and if so how you figured out how to do it...? My Health curriculum is almost 2 GB and I would love to discover a way to have it downloaded digitally from TPT, but because they're so huge, I haven't come up with anything yet. Thanks so much, Mrs. S.

Dear Mrs S.

Thanks for contacting me. The company I use is called PayLoadz.com. It allows you to email large digital files. It's set up for websites so when people buy a digital good PayLoadz.com takes a small piece through a check out option. The nice thing is that they allow you to just manually send material. When I get a sale on TpT for a shipped good I get the buyers email. I can then send the curriculum for download. The cons in the process are that some schools will block out PayLoadz.com (Some of the other members on PayLoadz.com sell some strange digital goods. I think I'm the only one in education). The buyer then gets a bit angry when it doesn't arrive. There isn't a way to tell if is blocked. Yahoo, gmail, etc all work fine. Just .k12 sometimes get blocked, or the link goes into a junk mail folder. If the email address is invalid you get a message that the file wasn't sent.

I usually send the buyer a message with the instructions with my gmail account before I send the link. The other con (kinda) is that the link for download is only active for I believe 24 hours after being sent. This has caused some problems mostly because buyers don't read instructions.

Overall, the company is solid, and the uploader is very strong. My entire curriculum is 5.6 GB and easily downloaded if the buyer has a high speed connections. Buyers with dial up, or terrible satellite will become frustrated when the download time is 12 hours. For this reason, I still offer the flashdrive mailed (free shipping) just to keep them happy and avoid bad feedback. I imagine 2GB won't run into as many issues but you will still get a few people with dinosaur computers struggling with the download.

If you send me your email I could send you a unit so you can test out the process / see if it's something that will help you. My email is ryemurf@gmail.com

If you have any more questions please feel free to contact me. I think going digitally has some headaches but the process is fast and most of the time works well. Best wishes.

Sincerely,
Ryan Murphy

I can send you a unit in the earth science curriculum if you are concerned / want to try the download. I would need your email address as I can't deliver the unit electronically to a TpT Username. Things on TpT are a bit strange today as emails are arriving hours late. I got your email earlier and sent you the entire weather and climate unit. The videos are links since I don't own the rights to them. If you have an internet connection in class they should play if you school doesn't block out youtube. You can also download them at home in advance. The air pollution portion of the unit doesn't have a high number of video links but the rest of the unit has several. My students loved the different parts that I included in my lecture that were from your presentation/unit. I'd like to update for this year, if this is the newer product?

Also... is the Virus, Bacteria, Parasites, Diseases Unit included in this unit, too? Or should I purchase that one separately?

I am a first year Science teacher who has a degree in Math/Language Arts. I currently coach three sports and would love to have the free time that this creates! I really like this curriculum and am thinking about purchasing the whole package. I have a few questions:
1. Is this aligned to the NC Essential Standards? I see that you have aligned it to the NGSS, is this like the Common Core for Science? Is that something other states are adopting?
2. Do you offer any sort of discount/payment plan? I am real interested in starting things as soon as possible (we start a Geology Unit on Monday when we get back from Thanksgiving break) but with Christmas, I do not have the extra income to pay for the whole curriculum at this time. We have already covered Hydro-cycle and Ecology and really wish that I had this before we covered those.
I look forward to hearing back from you.

Dear David Caccavaro,

Thank you for your interest. 1.) I'm not that familiar with the NC Essential Standards but I think the curriculum will have most everything you need. I describe the NGSS standards (Like the new common core standards but for science) - I don't really like them very much but have included where they are covered. I also describe some general standards for each unit. I'll send you the Geology Topics Unit and attach my curriculum guide that goes deep into the standards for each unit. Other states are adopting the NGSS (unfortunate as they are driven by special interest groups ---check out Achieve Inc sometime). Basically the curriculum covers most everything you can think of minus some geography material such as topographic mapping etc which are sometimes considered a science landform unit.

2.) I am having a huge cyber Monday sale tomorrow where the entire curriculum will be 20% of and then I think TpT takes another 28% of. I imagine the entire curriculum that is $64.99 will somewhere in the $40's. The sale runs this Monday and Tuesday.

3.) I'll send you my Geology Topics Unit to look at right now. In a few minutes you will receive an email from a sciencepowerpoint.com . At the bottom of this email you will find a link and download instructions from PayLoadz.com. This is a safe and secure company that specializes in sending extremely large digital files. I have broken the curriculum into two downloads rather than one large file to make the download process more successful. The teacher version is similar to the teachers but missing the answer keys, quizzes, games, owl, and surprises meant for the classroom. Please do not try and download them both at the same time as this may cause a break in the download which will require you to restart. Please download one and then the other. Just click the link to begin downloading. The links will expire in 48 hours so please try and download within that time period. You are welcome to contact me for additional links if needed. If downloading from a school computer it's possible that your schools security features are preventing the download. In this case, try downloading from a home computer or contact me so I can send the curriculum to your personal email address. Once you've downloaded the curriculum you will find a welcome letter / curriculum guide, materials list, and more to help answer any questions you may have. If you have any questions, do not receive the link, or encounter any problems with the download please let me know and I will act quickly to assist you. Thanks again and best wishes.

Dear Josh,

Thanks for your interest and sorry for the delay. I try and avoid using TpT during the school day. If you email me at ryemurf@gmail.com I can send you an entire unit of study. You will also find a welcome guide that explains many curriculum possibilities.

You will find the curriculum guide and more at my free tour.... http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Science-Curriculum-Middle-School-4-years-50000-Slides-Tour-148474

I usually break Earth Science over two years mixed with some life science in the second year. If running just one year, I would recommend starting with the Weathering, Erosion, Soil Science, Ice Ages and Glaciers Unit. I would next move into Geology, followed by Astronomy, and finish with the Weather and Climate Unit. That will be a very busy year. You also have the Rivers, and Lakes Unit, and Water Molecule Unit for Earth Science to play with. I have 50 minute periods everyday and can't complete more than 5 units in a year if you run the entire unit. If I'm short of time you can skip parts of a unit / projects.

Thanks again for your interest. If interested in an entire unit of study (a couple of months of material) please email me and I'll send it to your email for download. Thanks again.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

Truly interactive and engaging PowerPoint creation complete with chronological homework / classwork, lesson notes, video links, and much more. 20 Full Units of Study, 50,000+ Slides 10+ Years in Public Education (Middle School + High School) Bachelors Degree in Biology and Environmental Studies. State Teaching Certificate, Masters Degree in Educational Leadership, Outdoor Educator, Coach, Ski-Instructor, Guide, Parent, Outdoor Enthusiast, Lived in East Africa, Great Life Experiences, and a love for science and education.

MY TEACHING STYLE

For TpT I have created an entire original curriculum over the past 12 years. I ditched the textbooks early in my career and opted for students to create their own textbooks with use of a learning journal. I began converting everything I was doing into a super charged form of PowerPoint. I have posted 20 different science units in Life, Earth, and Physical Science, and hundreds of smaller posting which are just small parts of these 20 units. The units use elaborate PowerPoint Presentations to deliver important notes, direct lab activities, provide follow-up questions, prompts for videos, and includes assessments, modified assessments, class notes, and answers to the assessments for support staff. My use of PowerPoint is high energy, with as much interaction between students and teacher as possible. I don't give the students anything for free, and they must engage to move one. Great thought questions, meaningful activities that reinforce instruction, tons of review opportunities, exciting video shorts, projects and much more are built right into the slideshow. I consider how students learn rather than just bullet listing facts. I use color coded text so students can focus on one point at a time. Everything is as visual as possible and presented in a step by step process. Most importantly, the activities and discussions that emerge from the slideshows are incredibly meaningful. Detailed unit notes with visuals follow each PowerPoint slideshow for students who require assistance and support staff. A bundled homework package and modified version also follows the slideshows for nightly review. I have 50,000 + slides over 20 full units of study that have been constantly improved every year. These units are the products of 10 years of trial in an incredibly busy and challenging classroom environment. I wouldn't post a unit that hasn't worked wonders for me and my students. Please contact me if you would like to sample some of my work. I will gladly send you a unit or more to view and use in your classroom. Thanks for your interest.
