Oh my goodness, I don't really know. I usually just get it out of the media center at school to show it and I've never really paid attention. I honestly didn't know that there was more than one. I will try to find out and let you know. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Wow, I have no idea why it is not there. I'll double check and try to re-post. I am having major computer problems right now though, so I'm not sure that I'll be able to re-post it on TPT (I've been having trouble uploading stuff lately) , so if you'll give me your e-mail address, I think I can get it to you that way. So so so sorry!!!

I have no idea why the rest of the answer key is not there, but I will double check and try to re-post. I have been having major computer problems and have been having trouble getting things to upload onto TPT though, so if you will send me your e-mail address I can probably do it that way. Thank you so much for your quick response! Our principal said no because, "Every male character she encounters attacks her." I told her that is just not true, but this is how she remembers it. She said was disappointed in me because she trusted me to make good decisions when submitting my book order for next year. I know there are a few "touchy" parts, but my hope is that I can convince her I will handle the material appropriately and respectfully (I am insulted that she could think I would handle it any other way). Our students need this book. So many are living a life parallel to Walls' and I just want them to believe that they can make it out. I keep telling them that these school walls are their way out, but so many wind up just like their parents. And for the students lucky enough to have security, my hope is, like you mentioned, that they will gain a new found appreciation and perhaps gain perspective on those around them who are relentlessly bullied for circumstances beyond their control.

Thanks again!

Jeannette Walls is speaking in my town on Thursday night, I would love to ask her what she would say to your principal. I hope you can convince her- I really think the book is worth it. Maybe you can find a similar book about a male character to pair with it to appease your principal? Good luck to you!

Hello.

I am hoping you can help me. What grade do you use The Glass Castle with? I was hoping to incorporate this novel into my 9th grade curriculum, but the principal said no. I have a chance to defend my choice, so any feedback regarding student reaction/ engagement would be helpful.

Thanks!

Hi, I think the novel would work beautifully with 9th graders. I have never taught this novel with a class; it was the summer reading assignment for our entire school (One book, one school) about four summers ago, so every student from the rising 9th graders to the seniors read the book and then did activities and assignments based on it in their classes. The students really liked it because it is funny and shocking and tragic, but is a wonderful message about what one can overcome if they are determined and work hard. It makes the affluent students realize how lucky they are and can make the impoverished students feel better about their situation and/or affirms for them that their feelings are normal and gives them hope that they too can overcome difficult childhood situations. There are so many age appropriate topics for 9th graders in this novel. I want to know why the principal said no. Has he/she read the book? Good luck- I hope this helped!

Hi Sabrina,

Would you be willing to provide a preview of this study guide? I'm trying to determine between two products which would work best for my students. Are the comprehension questions short answer (requiring about 3 word responses)? Thank you!

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have taught high school English for 15 years and have taught everything including 9th - 12th grade English, English for ESL learners, AP Language and Composition, Creative Writing and Speech and Debate.

MY TEACHING STYLE

My classroom style is very colorful and active. I am a very social and visual person, so I like to incorporate a lot of hands-on activities and partner/group work into my lessons. I try to make my lessons/units multi-sensory experiences for my students, so I do things like play music and audio recordings of literature, show video clips, art work and cartoons that relate to unit, bring in food that relates to the unit etc. I like to have fun, so I try to do things that students will remember and enjoy!
