Good morning! I am a first grade teacher, formerly PK teacher. I just finished my masters in May (yea!) with a degree in Mind, Brain and Education – a subfield of education. The first program was started at Harvard by Howard Gardner and Kurt Fisher (if you haven’t read any of Kurt Fisher’s work on Skill Theory and you are interested in the cognitive processes involved in learning, you must read his work!)
Cut to the chase. When I moved up from PK to 1st I was shocked by my students’ lack of number sense. I spent an entire year and all last summer trying to figure out what was missing. In Nov I attended a workshop that on number sense. When I heard the presentation I recognized all the “big” names of the research I had been investigating. The workshop was a training session for an iPad app (Native Numbers). It seemed like a valid, robust app, but I am a skeptic and had to know: would this really work.
I am here to tell you that with the first skill set I saw every cognitive model of learning embedded in this app. I also realized that this app is more than a learning tool; it has built in formative and summative assessment as it is adaptive and levels up and down based on student performance and leads to mastery.
Now I am on a “mission” – everything we read tells us our students are lacking number sense. I believe this app is a fabulous tool to remediate those deficits. I have no vested interest in this app except that I am one of those people that has to solve problems and when I think I have found possible answers, I have to share that with others. Our kids are too important not to share---which is why I love reading blogs! I am asking for teachers to simply read the research and then try out the app and give me feedback---or give the feedback yourself to the developers. I am that convinced. I am not a salesman and I feel quite strange in this new role I have taken upon myself…but I have nothing to lose, or gain, except knowing that maybe we can have an enormous impact on our students!

G Tolbert (TpT Seller) re: Simple Shapes Digital Clip Art
What is the main difference between the jpg and the png files? Also would it be possible to get this without the white in the background? When I bought this I didn't realize that it would have the white square around it. I'm tying to use it in a powerpoint and the white part doesn't look that great as the shapes transition in on the slide! Or is there a way for me to take the white off? Thanks for your help!

I always use the transparency tool in Microsoft products to delete the background - but I have made the changes on the COLOR files so you don't have to do this - which have now been re-uploaded. I will work on the black and white within the week. I am heading into my last week of school - and have lots to do with report cards and creating a class DVD right now but will get to asap.

I have been looking at your "Plant Observation Log for the Primary Grades" that you posted on Feb. 29, 2012. I really like this and want to purchase it. However, when I looked on the TPT store, I see Primary Plant Observation Log. Are these the same? The reason I ask is they do not look the same. The one on the blog has yellow and purple flower pots with very colorful flowers and the TPT one shows a wheel barrow with sun flowers.

Unfortunately the August Super Sentence pack does not explain how to begin using them with students at the beginning of the year - but something that probably should be added. I don't know when I will get to it... but definitely a wonderful suggestion and something worth looking into and adding.
The only instructions I had on my blog were:
One way to get students to use more complex sentences when writing and make sure they grasp the concept of who, what, when, where, why, or how is to teach them to write SUPER SENTENCES. Begin by developing super sentences as a whole group. Once students have had several opportunities to practice with you, move on to small group or partners. You may even want to make it a competition to see which group can craft the most creative and grammatically correct SUPER sentence. You will be surprised how quickly they ALL catch on and are ready to write their very own complex super sentences.

I distribute the cards to the kids, have them read the cards to themselves first then we play I have ...who has. The child with the start card begins by reading aloud, then which ever card is asked for "Who has ..." reads their next. We race to see how fast we can go through the entire stack of cards. The kids love it!

I purchase the writing word banks and paper for each month and I LOVE them! I was a little disappointed that the February writing pack didn't have the graphic organizer like the other packs. Overall I'm very pleased with the pack! The funny thing is, not only did I miss the graphic organizer but my students did as well! They are used to writing their thoughts/words into the organizer and then start their writing. They were asking me for the "bubble map". Is there anyway you could make me a graphic organizer for the February pack? Mainly Valentine's day, Washington, and Lincoln. I would GREATLY appreciate it! LOVE, LOVE, LOVE THESE!!!

Right now I am working on a Animals of Africa Informational Writing Pack that include a variety of maps, pre-writing and drafting templates, as well as word banks and adorable craftivities to match to peek over the top of the final published drafts.
