Hi Sasha-
I bought your data sheets (must-have for sped as well as 20 editable), but what I am really looking for is something where I can note IEP benchmarks and track data regarding them a few times a week. Can you direct me to a form that might be suited to that?

Hello, I am looking for a social story about having a friend come over to the house to play, with particular emphasis on greeting and saying good-bye. A Tender Teacher for Special Needs   (TpT Seller) re: 10 Writing Centers for Early Childhood or Special Education
I am strongly considering buying this for next year. I don't feel like I have a good system set up for writing. A lot of my kids struggle in this area. I have a few that I feel won't be able to do this. How do you adapt your writing center for the lower level students? For instance, I have a 5th grader that is still working on drawing shapes correctly.
March 23, 2014 Report inappropriate comment

Sasha Hallagan  (TpT Seller)
For your guys that can't write or struggle. Here are a few ideas:
- typing
- stamping letters for the main words in each center (pick 5-6 words for each center for the student to stamp the letters of)
- make a picture for each center - the student can copy the picture - the picture can be SUPER basic (it's essentially the idea of this adapted journal: http://theautismhelper.com/adapted-morning-journal-page/ed) the student will be "drawing" their writing center task
- give response options as pictures - ie. if you are a movie star would you live in a mansion, tent, or hospital (with visual choices)

Hi Sasha - I have a student in 5th grade that has Autism, but is extremely high functioning. She has excellent memorization skills which have allowed her to find success with concrete questions. However, she has little ability to answer inferential questions or draw conclusions. I noticed that a lot of your material is geared toward younger students. Do you have anything for comprehension in the intermediate grades? Her reading level is around low 4th grade. Thanks!

Since inferences and abstract thinking can be difficult - I suggest using easier materials since this skill can be so difficult. I would suggest targeting this skill in isolation. The inference games might be a good place to start:

Hi,Sasha, First let me say thank you for your wonderful products(I've about bought them all)! I don't know how you do it all, and teach ,too. My question is, what do you post outside your classroom door for a schedule? I know about times, etc. but I would like to have something out there that would address that the schedule might not be reflective of the day...something that would mention that there's other things going on in the classroom. And there might be a reason that we are not doing math at 1:00 because of extenuating circumstances... I figured you are the person to ask...you are so accomplished. Thank you again!

Sasha,

First of all, I love your products. I teach first graders with autism, and have used many of your products to great success with these kids.

I just bought your spring vocabulary unit. I wanted to ask if you intentionally did not include the Matching pictures to pictures and Matching words to pictures section for the Easter unit. There is only the making words (velcro), tracing words, and writing words sections in this unit. I like to use the matching pictures to pictures and words to pictures as an introductory piece, and would like to have those to use for Easter.

Thanks!

It's a breath of fresh air to see others using the same techniques! I find it's not very common!

Anyways, the reason I was writing was to see if you were going to be posting a St. Patrick's Day Bingo game. Our kids our K-2 and these games are perfect for working on their scanning and matching skills.

I am a huge fan and follower of your work.

I have purchased a lot of your resources and usually retype / amend them for Australian spelling.

I just purchased your behaviour contingency maps resource and was wondering if you could change the spelling of "behavior" to "behaviour" which would save me trying to use boardmaker to amend the resource for use in my classroom?

Sorry to be a bother.

Hi Sasha,
Regarding my earlier email (yesterday). I have purchased the following items from your store but have not been able to print the adapted books successfully. Despite all my instructions to the printer, items continue to print outside of the right margin. You mentioned that sending the items to me by email might work so I'd like to give that a try. I don't know if ALL of these items will print with the same error as I have not tried to print all of them, I just know the adapted books definitely do so I thought I'd send you the entire list. I don't know how difficult it will be to send me all of the items by email so, if you prefer, just send the books that way and if I have trouble printing the other items I will email you again.

I really like the items you have developed and look forward to using them with my students. Thank-you for all your help to solve this issue. I work for a poor district and our printer is almost as old as I am. I suspect that is part of the problem.

Thanks again,

Slice is which set you are working on - so a slice of that total skill. For example if you are working on letters A-D that would be one slice. Does that make sense? Sorry - I should have included that description in there!

Sasha,
I am a TVI working with a 3rd grade student who is blind and has an ASD. Is it okay to modify your materials to include braille and tactile cues? The materials will retain their original format, but I need to add to them to make it accessible for my student. I love your materials, video, and blog. So helpful!
Looking forward to your response. -Deedra

I purchased the Writing Center for Early Childhood/Special Ed. Do you have a tracking sheet to keep up with what sentences, writing activities, etc. that students complete?

I am putting together the center now;some will have to be modified for some of my SPED students. Overall, it is a great center!

Thanks,
Patsy

The Differentiated Teacher  (TpT Seller) re: The MOST Space Efficient & Organized Work Task System for a Special Ed Classroom
I just purchased this item and am so excited to get started on putting together work tasks. I was wondering how you keep track of which tasks each student has completed and whether it was completed correctly or not. I'm guessing I can just make a spread sheet and keep track that way once I figure out which tasks to put in. Also, do you change tasks throughout the year or use the same 50 all year? Thank you.

Alexis W. re: Classroom Jobs Visual Directions and Labels! Set 2
Hi Sasha!! My name is Alexis and I teach high school students with moderate intellectual disabilities and Autism. They have class jobs, and I was wondering if you could make some labels for jobs that are not included in your packet. Their jobs are unloading the dishwasher, folding laundry, sharpening pencils, sweeping the floor, cleaning the desks, chairs, and beanbags, and cleaning the windows. Do you think you could make some visuals for these?

A while back I saw a product for Language center. Where you had data sheets and materials that a TA could use with two students at a time. One student would work with the teacher and one had independent work with their binder. I am finally ready to implement this and can't find it. I would appreciate your help.

Thanks!

Hi Jena,

I use most of the pages from these two products for the independent binder:

Buyer
I bought about $75 dollars worth of materials yesterday, December 3rd, and I downloaded them to my school computer. I did not print them to my school printer because it is black and white. I attached them to emails, mailed them to myself and tried to print them at home on my color printer, but they would not open as pdf and print. (??) Don't know what I did wrong, I really need the materials, and can't afford to pay for them twice... Help?

Hi Deb!

Don't worry we will definitely figure it out!

You can always redownload products from tpt. When you log in- go to my purchases and you can redownload. Try that on your home computer and see if printing will work. It might be an issue of emailing.

Please email me back if it does not work and we will figure it out- Sasha.theautismhelper@gmail.com.

Sorry about the mix up!

Rebekah Witkowski  (TpT Seller) re: Must-Have Forms and Templates for a Special Education Class
Hi Sasha, I am looking for a daily communication form that I can send home with my students for their parents. I have one that students fill out, but was looking for something that my aides could "check off" about a student's day....not just behavior but subjects/activities completed, and needs (lunch money, clothes, toothpaste, etc.) Do you have anything like that? I am spending a lot of time writing in communication notebooks and am looking for something more functional! Thanks! :)

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have been teaching in a self contained autism room for 6 years and I love it! I teach 10-14 years olds and have a wide range of types of students in my classroom.

MY TEACHING STYLE

Autism is a spectrum so I have a big variety in my classroom! We need to incorporate life skills instruction, social skills training, academic teaching, communication systems, behavior management, hygiene training, inclusion, expressive/receptive language instruction, and fine/gross motor practice into one busy day. Each child's curriculum is developed specifically for them based on their IEP goals. Organization is key with this much going! My paraprofessionals make fun of my perfectionist tendencies but that is how we get so much done! The backbone of our classroom is Applied Behavior Analysis- which I am currently getting my masters in. We take consistent and thorough data, make data based instructional decisions, and look at the function of the behavior for all behavior management systems!

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

My website The Autism Helper was named one of the top 30 blogs for teachers!

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

I am Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). I have a Masters in Applied Behavior Analysis from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology and a Bachelors in Special Educaiton from Miami University of Ohio.
