Could you please tell me what "fish" you use for this activity? And where do I find them? You have peaked my interest in doing this with my students but I need to know where I can find the fish before I purchase. I teach in a very rural school sixty miles from anywhere so the more details you can give me as to where to get these fish would be greatly appreciated. Are they candy fish? Can I get them at Wal-Mart/Target? Thanks a bunch! I totally love all your materials! Thank you. I shall pass your website onto my husband as he is the science facilitator for his district. Sheryl

Hi,
We are planning on using your materials at a workshop. My co-presenter already purchased the sand activity booklet. My District is going to purchase additional copies for the workshop, between 7-11 copies. The District has to order them, as they cannot reimburse from receipts. Can you help us to order the additional copies at the reduced rate?
Thanks!

Hello,
I understand that what happens is on an order, the first one is at full price and the next orders ( on the same order) are reduced to 4.85 for this lesson. So I think the district can order with a charge card and now purchase orders. I will do some research to see how they can do purchase orders.
If it does not work out fairly from the website, I will send to you directly. I will be in touch again. You may contact me directly at the following email address.

Is there a list of common core standards that are addressed in your primary books? Thanks for the help. Just want to make sure this will help cover my standards before I buy the book.

Science and Kids  (TpT Seller)
We do not have a list of the common core standards of language arts and math addressed in this book. This was written for the earlier National Science Standards. Now, the Next Generation of Science Standards are out and adopted by many states. All the lessons that we currently create are specific to those performance standards.

We have taken the books that you asked about and broken them into smaller packets with added math and language arts writing activities. You can see a slideshow of each section at:
http://scienceandkidsactivities.com

Under the Integrated Science Lessons tab
http://scienceandkidsactivities.com/Science_and_Kids_Activities/Integrated_Science_Lessons/Integrated_Science_Lessons.html

Look at the Levels 1,2,3 to see assessments of science practices. Look at posters to review how to introduce the practices.
The books contain the science lessons ,teacher instructions, and rubrics.
You do get a free book when you order one so you can get both primary books for the cost of one.

Hello, I am a first year science teacher and I absolutely love this activity but I have to be honest and say that I am needing some help with connecting this activity to my 4th grade curriculum. There is some chemistry involved- Interactions of Matter. The cellulose fibers, polymer, are linked like a chain (see science notes). The cellulose in the paper is attracted to the water molecules, so the water molecules "crawl up " the paper.
It is also like the capillary action of real flowers in a vase- the classic activity of a carnation and food coloring.
I am sending your question on to Karen who will send a more detailed answer soon.
Sheryl
Interactions of Matter
In this investigation, paper (a solid) interacts with water (a liquid). Paper is made of the polymer, cellulose, a chain of repeating sugar molecules.
Cellulose molecules and water molecules are attracted to each other. When they interact, there is a physical change.
The cellulose absorbs the water. As the water enters the cellulose chains, the paper becomes lubricated and swells up.
When the paper swells up, due to the interaction of the cellulose absorbing the water, it pushes on the bend in the petals and they unfold.

These four lessons are in the Intermediate book as basic lessons, with a focus on the processes. As individual lessons on TPT, we have added writing pages and other activities and background to make them more useful. All 9 of the enhanced lessons from the Intermediate Book are bundled into the TPT download Sound Energy: Use the Scientific Practices. These activities are written by Karen Ostlund and illustrated by myself, Sheryl Mercier. They may have the illustrated look of an AIMS book because I was the original artist for them as part of my Masters project. I also authored/illustrated 37 more books for them over time so my style is recognizable. It has not changed much over time. The phases of the moon is far more extensive than an activity from AIMS, including rubrics and practice questions.
We hope you get much use out of the lessons.

Buyer re: Assessments for the Science Process Skills of Inquiry Primary Grades
Are there psychometric properties? Validity? Reliability?
December 2, 2012 Report inappropriate comment
Science and Kids
Science and Kids  (TpT Seller)
Dear Sheikham,
The Primary Science Process Skills of Inquiry Assessments are not psychological tests. They are intended to assess the acquisition of the process skills of inquiry and include criterion referenced rubrics. The psychometric properties of a psychological test relate to the data that has been collected on the test to determine how well it measures the construct of interest. In order to develop a good psychological test, the new test is subjected to statistical analyses to ensure that it has good psychometric properties. There are two broad types of psychometric properties that a test must have in order to be considered a good measure of a particular construct. The first type is called "reliability." This is the test's ability to measure the construct of interest consistently. Tests should also demonstrate other types of reliability, including internal consistency (i.e., all the items in the test should be measuring the same construct). The second broad property that a good test has is called "validity." Validity refers to how well the test accurately measures the construct of interest. There are also many different kinds of validity that can be assessed using statistics. I hope this information is useful to you.
