There is some chemistry involved- Interactions of Matter. The cellulose fibers, polymer, are linked like a chain (see science notes). The cellulose in the paper is attracted to the water molecules, so the water molecules "crawl up " the paper.
It is also like the capillary action of real flowers in a vase- the classic activity of a carnation and food coloring.

I am looking at four of your sound units: Investigating w/sound, Communicate w/sound, Making Models w/sound, and Inferring w/sound. What I'm unclear about is if they are all in your book for the intermediate level or if they are seperate process lessons. The book looks great, but these are the lessons I'm specifically interested in. I would appreciate your clarificiation.

These activities are written by Karen Ostlund and illustrated by myself, Sheryl Mercier. They may have the illustrated look of an AIMS book because I was the original artist for them as part of my Masters project. I also authored/illustrated 37 more books for them over time so my style is recognizable. It has not changed much over time. The phases of the moon is far more extensive than an activity from AIMS, including rubrics and practice questions.

The sound basic lessons are in the Green Rising to the Challenge Book grades 5-9. We have added writing, extensions and more basic information to the sound digital lessons.
I am in the process of combining the sound, shells, rocks and posters into a revised digital Rising to the Challenge ( green ) Book. I am having some trouble getting it to the 100MB limit .

The Primary Science Process Skills of Inquiry Assessments are not psychological tests. They are intended to assess the acquisition of the process skills of inquiry and include criterion referenced rubrics. The psychometric properties of a psychological test relate to the data that has been collected on the test to determine how well it measures the construct of interest. In order to develop a good psychological test, the new test is subjected to statistical analyses to ensure that it has good psychometric properties. There are two broad types of psychometric properties that a test must have in order to be considered a good measure of a particular construct. The first type is called "reliability." This is the test's ability to measure the construct of interest consistently. Tests should also demonstrate other types of reliability, including internal consistency (i.e., all the items in the test should be measuring the same construct).The second broad property that a good test has is called "validity." Validity refers to how well the test accurately measures the construct of interest. There are also many different kinds of validity that can be assessed using statistics.
