Could you place "oxygen" closer to the arrow? I think it would be clearer to children that oxygen comes from the plant.

Science for Kids (TpT Seller)
Yes it could & I used to use it when I taught 5th grade! Since I now use this with grade 4, I simplified the traits chart & designated every trait as "AA, Aa, or aa". You could cross that off & use "NN, Nn, nn" for nose; "MM, Mm, mm" for mouth, etc. so it is similar to the letters we use when discussing Mendel's pea plants. You can also have your students write "dominant" or "recessive" right onto the traits chart. Students in grade 5 will be able to understand AA, Aa means we'll see the dominant phenotype & aa means the recessive will pop up. The coin toss activity illustrates the chance aspect of genetics and also reinforces the concept that half of our DNA comes from mom & the other half from dad. My 5th graders loved doing the DNA extraction experiment & it works like a charm every time!

Hi Alleydog22! I do this unit with my 2nd graders. They have a 30 minute science period twice per week. They complete the entire unit in 6 periods which is about 3 weeks. Here is my lesson plan along with time breakdown:
(1) Intro to mixtures/chromatography - 15 min. (2) I demonstrate chromatography experiment - 15 min. (3) Students experimenting with different colors: full 30 min. period- I have my students cut up their own chromatography strips & set up their own experiments. They have several markers running at the same time. (4) Read the mystery & test one mystery powder -30 min (5) Finish testing all mystery powders -30 min. (6) Test 4 mystery notes - 30 min. (7) Analyze results, solve the mystery/discuss - 20 min.

I had trouble printing the file. It downloaded fine, but I never could get pages 4, 5, and 6 to print. I had to print all other pages individually. Has anyone else had this problem? Other than that I love it!!
