MsBolin re: Applications of Chemistry Research Project
Sorry, the description here doesn't talk about a lab - it says it's for applications of chemistry - I'm confused?

I am so sorry! I was describing my "Create A Lab" chemistry project. My bad!

As far as the "Applications of Chemistry" project, I don't provide the students with a list of topics. The students are instructed to look through the Methods section of a peer-reviewed Journal (I did provide several in the classroom) and find an analysis used there. Examples students will likely encounter include gas chromatography, HPLC, centrifugation, electrophoresis, etc. They are using the journal to generate the launching point for the research. The goal is not to understand the full journal article but to see how the principles of chemistry are used in research.

As far as your question about sources goes: on the grading rubric, it reads "Correct number and type of sources and proper citation within the text of paper". I tended to use MLA format since that was what the students were learning from their English and History teachers.

MsBolin re: Applications of Chemistry Research Project
Hi! I am wondering if this include suggestions for topics students can research. Do you provide specific sources students can use or any guidelines on where to get sources? And do you have specific instructions about how students should provide references?

Thanks!

The way I set it up (and it is described in the download) is that I brought in all of the various lab manuals that are sitting on bookshelves to prompt ideas for the students. The "rules" are they could use an existing procedure (directly from the manual) but had to change at least 1 element of the procedure. They also had to generate their own pre/postlab questions and answer keys.

I also showed students how to access MSDS pages online as well as supply companies such as Ward's (I also brought in all of the various catalogs that just accumlate in the mail room for them to look up ordering info for the lab supplies).

The specific instructions on the references simply states on the assignment handout for students to "Include all source materials used. If a lab manual was used for an idea, list it here."

Hope that helps! I really love doing this as a semester project for my Chemistry students! It pulls so many components together and gives the students a greater appreciation for where their lab fees go! :)

I have also been teaching general biology (Biology 101 and 102) courses at a community college for a year.

MY TEACHING STYLE

Interactive lecture with the goal of guiding students through collaborative and individual unit projects and research.

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

Outstanding Science Teacher of the Year (District level) in 2008.

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY
