I teach 8th grade. That is the bottom end of your grade range. I am a new science teacher. Will 8th graders be able to do?

I teach mostly 9th graders and don't let anyone tell you that 8th,9th,and 10th graders are alike. They are just change so fast during that time period. 8th graders should be able to write a five paragraph essay that argues a standpoint. They should be able to plug numbers into an equation a solve it. They should be able to use a triple beam balance with some familiarity and be able to have an accuracy of +\- .5 grams. They should be able to read a graduated cylinder even if they don't really understand what a meniscus is. They should be able to read a passage out of the the textbook and paraphrase or outline main points. This is a tough one since reading a science text is not like reading other types of text. They should be able to learn the vocabulary and be able to tell you the definitions in their own words. They should start learning how to take notes in class and use them for studying purposes. Hope this gives you a base to start from. Remember to have fun and the first year is the worst but it will get better. Focus on running the classroom and the instruction will follow. Good luck!

Buyer re: Chemical Equations and Balancing Equations
I just want to say thanks for everything this year. I went back into the classroom and your Powerpoints and activities have really been a life saver. The school asked me the other day if I would teach Chemistry. Do you have a Chem syllabus that I could buy?

Thankyou for the kind words. I have tried to make the powerpoints to be more the flow of how I would present the material. I am a bit of a showman and I feel that adds to the presentation. I do not have a syllabus for chemistry since I have not actually taught chemistry. I do have the lessons and activities for chemisty and I really think the way I do stoichiometry is the way to go. Once you get the hang of it, you will wonder why you did it anyother way. Make sure you set up the background knowledge first though. If you need an idea for chemisty, just pass it on to me and I will see if I have it "in inventory" to post on my items list. Again, thank you for your praise of the powerpoints.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

This is my 10th year teaching and have recently been part of a new 9th grade academy. I have taught biology, chemistry, integrated science, and Physical science.

MY TEACHING STYLE

My style is kind of like Beakman. I am enthusiastic and can get over excited with the simplest of concepts. This is especially true if it is readily availiable to real world contexts. I have gotten a new ceiling mounted projector and I have been having a blast incorporating it into my style - hence the powerpoints.

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

I am just a simple kind of guy. It is well known in my class that I am not one to waste on clipart and "pretty" worksheets. I have drill sheets that are meant to reinforce concepts that I teach. I also am not the most gramatically correct or win spelling bees. It is kind of a game for my students to play find the "Mistake Waldo" in my powerpoints. It is alright though since I am getting interaction a little more concentration.I think this summer I will try and create more drill sheets to offer.
