duhlig re: History of Life on Earth / Origin of Life PowerPoint and Notes
I am having an access problem with the Histoey of Life on Earth ppt & notes material, when I try to open the ppt I get this message..."Do not have access privileges." I purchased an additional license thinking this was the problem. Downloaded the file, but got the same message. The other files open: review & quizzes.

Can you help?

Hi Drew,

I wish I knew why this happens! It doesn't happen very often, but every once in a while I get a message like yours. First, can you re-name the file and then try to open it again? Sometimes this will solve the problem. If not, please email me (amy1007@aol.com) and I will send you the files your need via email. Also, if you purchased the extra license solely because you were having this problem, please go to the bottom of this page and click on "contact us" and let the TpT staff know. Ask for a refund. You should not have to purchase an additional license because you are having a problem. The additional licenses are needed when additional teachers want to use the product at your school.

I am sorry you have been inconvenienced, but we will get the problem solved.

cami11 re: AP Biology Review PowerPoints Set of 25 PPTs of 3245 Slides
Amy, The AP Review look very promising & plan on purchasing all of them.
2 questions: I am NOT a computer wiz; do I need my IT guy to explain & train about "TpT" files? I have no idea what this means to me; I have 2 yr old Dell & an IPad 2.
2nd question: how do you think theses fit into the new test & curricula? This is my 2nd year in AP, however I have been teaching Biology for 8 yrs.
Thank you for your time. P.S. I am writing this from my flu sick bed :-( & talk about worrying about my AP kids!! So your reviews sound very helpful!

Science Stuff  (TpT Seller)
Hello cami11! So sorry you are sick. I hope you feel better soon. The flu ran through our school, but I think we are past the epidemic now.

First Question: The 25 PowerPoints are in a zipped file. All of my products are in zipped files, and it is extremely rare for anyone to have a problem unzipping the file. You will need some sort of software to unzip the file. WinZip is a free download that does this, but I bet your computer already has software that will open the file. If you have any trouble whatsoever with the download, I can burn the PowerPoints to a CD and mail that out to you.

Do you have Microsoft PowerPoint on your computer? If so, then you will be able to play the PowerPoints for your students without any trouble. I hook my computer to a projector, and spend a few minutes each day running through reviews.

Second Question is the million dollar question! Until we actually see a version of the new test, it is hard to know what is in and what is out! The review questions on the PowerPoint are just "content-based" questions. Example: What problems were faced by plants and animals as they transitioned from a life in water to a life on land?

I know that the type of question will be different on the new exam, but I still feel that if the student has mastery of the vast volume of information we have to teach, they will be okay. The PowerPoints do not really address the new math grid-in section of the test. I am in the process of making out review sheets for my students that include math problems from the equation sheet. It is a work in progress and I will list it on TpT when it is finished.

I do offer one of my review PowerPoints for free. Be sure to download it and look at it before you decide to buy the others. Here is the link:

Please let me know if you have further questions, and get well soon!

Hi there, and thank you so much for your question. I have a very long list of materials that I would like to get added to TpT. Unfortunately, the human body is still on the "to-do" list. I teach full time, and try to add things to TpT as I can.

The only item I have on TpT at this time is a review PowerPoint that I put together for my AP students. It would not be suitable for teaching material for the first time. It is just 677 slides of questions and answers to be used to review for the AP exam.

Hello!

First of all, I love your materials and can't thank you enough for sharing them with us. I recently made a mistake. At home, I added your classification and taxonomy bundle to my cart. After looking through the preview some more and what I am required to cover I decided to not make the purchase because I was afraid the material in the package was too difficult for my students. When I got to school in the morning, I loggged onto Teachers Pay Teachers and purchased several other resources for classification that I felt were easier. One thing I did not notice is that your bundle was still in my cart even though I logged on to a new computer. I did not know that they saved our 'cart'. I am not asking you for a refund, but instead can I use the money I spent on that bundle to purchase something else from you that will be more useful? I hate that I spent money on the Classification and Taxonomy bundle when I really can't use it for my students. I would be happy to purchase something else from you that I can use. I appreciate you considering this request.

Thank you,
Brianne

Thank you for your interest in my products. I am very pleased that you are pleased! :)

Some of my ecology materials are bundled and some are not. This is a "work in progress" for me, also. I currently have three ecology units that are bundled. They are:

Introduction to Ecology Complete Unit Bundle: http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Introduction-to-Ecology-Complete-Unit-Teaching-Bundle

Population Ecology Complete Unit Bundle: http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Population-Ecology-Complete-Unit-Teaching-Bundle

Community Ecology Complete Unit Bundle: http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Community-Ecology-Complete-Unit-Plan-Teaching-Bundle

I do have plans for three more ecology units: 1. Energy Flow Through the Ecosystem/Recycling of Chemical Elements, 2. Biomes of the World, and 3. Humans and the Environment. Unfortunately, I am a full time teacher and have limited time to upload new products. For these last three topics, I already have PowerPoints, notes, quizzes and review materials listed. But they are not bundled into complete units at this time.

A complete list of all of my ecology materials can be found at this link: http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/My-Products/Digital-Products/7251.

Please feel free to email me (Amy1007@aol.com) if I can be of further assistance.

Hi-
I am interested in purchasing your "Cell Structure, Function and Physiology CD - 5 Complete units" Ive looked at many of the lessons and attachments and would like some time to unpack them and edit them so that they will work for my classroom. I begin teaching biological science after winter break.
You mention that this item will be shipped to the buyer on a CD due to the total file size. Since the estimated delivery is up to 12 days I wonder if it would be possible to (after purchase) have you sent it to me from a dropbox account? That way I can get it immediately and use the time on my holiday break to prepare to use it the first week of January.
Thoughts?

Thanks so much for your interest in my Cell Physiology CD! I will receive an email notification from TpT within minutes of your purchase, and I can ship the CD on the same day. I am not sure where your saw "estimated delivery is up to 12 days" but my experience has been that my buyers have received the CD in 2-3 days when shipped by priority mail. I completely understand your desire to have your holiday break to prepare and plan for the start of school in January. I am, unfortunately, not familiar with dropbox accounts. If mailed today, you should receive the CD by Saturday. Thanks again for your interest!

PS - It has just occurred to me that perhaps you are not in the USA and that accounts for your estimate of 12 days to ship? If so, I will gladly try to work out the dropbox account.

The notes will include a set of notes for the teacher and an outline of the notes for the student. The student will fill in their outline as the PowerPoint is being presented. The set of notes for the teacher is completely filled in.

There is really no answer key for this, but the notes will include everything you need.

Yes. Question 2 requires three answers. The student should record these three answers in blanks 2, 3, and 4. Question 15 requires three answers. You can download this application from here: http://www.7-zip.org/

Once you have a zip program installed, then you can download the product zip

What do you consider a bacteria spreader?
October 21, 2012 Report inappropriate comment

A bacteria spreader is a simple device that is shaped like the letter "L". I have some that are plastic that I purchased with my other lab materials, and I have some that I made myself with glass tubing. I heated the glass in a Bunsen burner flame, and then bent the glass to a right angle to make an "L". The student holds the spreader at the top of the "L" so that the lower leg of the L is resting lightly on the agar. By moving the spreader across the surface of the agar, the inoculation sample is spread evenly across the surface of the agar. You might using a cotton swab or inoculating loop also, but my students tend to dig into the agar with these. Hope this helps! Please let me know if you need further clarification.

How is the spider at the bottom left corner named Quincy? I don't see red spots---or any spots. Please help.

Thank you.

Also, is Queenie a ladybug? I struggled with that one because I told my students that ladybugs have wings and fly. But, it seems, according to the key, it does "not" have wings. So, if you could just clarify these two animals...that would be great.

Thank you!

Science Stuff
Science Stuff  (TpT Seller)
Hi there. Thank you for your questions. I am happy to explain my reasoning. First of all, I wanted my students to learn to use a key, using only the characteristics that can see in these pictures. Many of these "animals" are not real, such as 2, 5, 7, and 12.

The spider in the bottom left hand corner (#10) has 4 red spots on its back. These spots are oddly shaped, but there are 4 spots of red color. As you classify this spider, you have to make a choice at step 7. Since it has more than 4 legs, you progress to step 11. At step 11 the choice is "has red spots" or "has yellow spots". This spider has red spots.

Animal #5 is Queenie. This is a picture of a fictitious animal. No wings are present. Wings are clearly visible in number 1, 3, 8, and 12, but not in number 5.

Please let me know if you need further clarification.
Thanks! Amy

Hi Drew. My ecology materials will be for Biology I level students. It is definitely a work in progress, but I hope that it will be 5 separate units: (1) Introduction to Ecology, (2) Population Ecology, (3) Community Ecology, (4) Ecosystems and the Biosphere, and (5) Human Impact on the Biosphere. There is just too much material for it to be one unit, so I am planning on it being 5 separate and complete units. Each unit will have a PowerPoint with notes for the teacher and the student, homework assignments, labs, quizzes and a unit test. After all 5 units have been completed, I plan to bundle them all together on a CD. Are you a follower of my store? If so, you will get email notifications when I add new products. I will add the products individually as they are prepared and then put together a complete unit after all products are ready. Watch the emails and hold off buying until you see the notification for the complete unit bundle. At this point, I have the notes for all 5 units ready, 2 Powerpoint are ready, and I am working on the third PowerPoint just now. Thank you so much for your continued support!

I do not have a pH meter. Can I do this lab using pH paper?

Yes, of course! I have done this lab many times using pH paper. I actually think it might be better using the pH paper. The student is more engaged in the process, and has to make decisions about the color of the paper. The use of the pH meter makes the lab a bit passive. Good luck with the lab and thanks so much for your purchase!

Do you know if you can use pine needles for this lab? Most of our trees have lost their leaves in New Jersey..

Thanks

I have never tried this with pine needles but I do not think this would work. The "needle" is an evolutionary adaption to reduce water loss from the leaf. The stomates would be terribly reduced in size, and (I bet) not visible with middle/high school microscopes.

Here is a suggestion. Go to the grocery and buy some fresh spinach. Tear the spinach leaf and try to separate the thin membrane along the lower surface of the leaf. Even if you don't think you have separated the lower epidermis, place the leaf under the microscope and focus on the torn edge of the leaf. I have not actually tried this myself, but I think this will work. The stomates should still open and close if the spinach is fresh enough. Send me an email if you need more help: amy1007@aol.com

I order it each year along with the rest of the lab supplies for my school. I have ordered from Carolina Biological, Flinn Scientific, Wards. I do not know of where it might be purchased locally, though. If you don't have time to order some, try plastic sandwich bags. They will work just fine. You just have to make sure that they are tightly sealed. The sandwich bags are kind of fun....the students realize that their sandwich is not really sealed up!!

I am a 7th & 8th grade science teacher and your samples reflect information that is found in our TN curriculum on this topic. I noticed that in your response to Hoefle, that you said you would include word documents for the worksheets. Is that available to all your buyers? Is the powerpoint in Microsoft Powerpoint or Keynote?
Thanks,
Sandee

Hi Sandee,

All of the items that I include on the CD are in two forms: a word document and a pdf file, just in case someone can't open the word document. This is available to any buyers; I automatically put both on the CD. Please feel free to edit the worksheets, etc. The powerpoint is in Microsoft Powerpoint. Thanks so much for your interest! Amy

Your samples are everything I am teaching in 7th grade. Is your CD mainly highschool material? What do the labs cover?

Hi there and thank you for your interest. The materials on this CD were written for my standard Biology I (high school) classes. I feel that you would be able to use many of the resources on my CD, but perhaps not all of them. I am not sure how much detail you plan to go into with your students. The powerpoint would be great for your students. It gets more and more complex and detailed as you go through it. You could simply omit the slides that are inappropriate for your students. All of the practice problem worksheets contain problems of varying difficulty. I will include a Word document for every worksheet so that you can easily omit the problems that might be too difficult. As for the labs, one lab called "The Effect of the Environment on Gene Expression" would be very appropriate for 7th grade. You have them plant and grow corn to count the number of green and albino stems. You can use corn seeds from your local feed store. The second lab, "Hardy Weinberg" would probably not be appropriate for 7th grade. I have a lab on DNA extraction that might be suitable and I would be happy to include it. Please let me know if I can be of further help. Thanks! Amy

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have been teaching for 27 years. I have taught Biology I, Honors Biology I, Chemistry, Honors Chemistry, Biology II, and AP Biology.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I teach "commando" style. My students are tired at the end of my class because I push to fill their brain with as much knowledge as possible. I try to employ varying teaching strategies throughout the class to keep my students interested and on their toes. My strength as a teacher and my love involves the lab. I have my students in the lab at least twice a week, and more if possible. I am currently teaching a Biology II Lab Techniques class where we spend about 90% of our time doing lab work.

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

In my years of teaching, I have been honored many times with local awards such as "Rotary Teacher of the Month", etc. I have been on many committees at the state level to write curricula and guidelines for the science courses taught in our state. I am consistently called upon to offer inservice activities in our school system. All of the above are very nice, but my favorite moments come from the students. I love the "light bulb" moments when I am teaching and see that students are catching on to the concepts. Since I teach mostly 12th graders, it is also extremely rewarding to have them come home from college the year after I taught them and have them tell me how much my class has helped them.

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

My undergraduate degree is in Biology. I have a Master's Degree in Curriculum and Instruction. I have what is called in our state "Master's plus 30" which is 30 graduate hours above the Master's degree.

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

My teaching materials and products are the result of 27 years of experience. My materials are standards-based and emphasize inquiry and critical thinking skills. I offer a wide variety of materials that are solid in content, are visually attractive, and best of all, are ready to be copied and passed out to your students.
