Good morning! I am a first grade teacher, formerly PK teacher. I just finished my masters in May (yea!) with a degree in Mind, Brain and Education – a subfield of education. The first program was started at Harvard by Howard Gardner and Kurt Fisher (if you haven’t read any of Kurt Fisher’s work on Skill Theory and you are interested in the cognitive processes involved in learning, you must read his work!)

Cut to the chase. When I moved up from PK to 1st I was shocked by my students’ lack of number sense. I spent an entire year and all last summer trying to figure out what was missing. In Nov I attended a workshop that on number sense. When I heard the presentation I recognized all the “big” names of the research I had been investigating. The workshop was a training session for an iPad app (Native Numbers). It seemed like a valid, robust app, but I am a skeptic and had to know: would this really work.

I am here to tell you that with the first skill set I saw every cognitive model of learning embedded in this app. I also realized that this app is more than a learning tool; it has built in formative and summative assessment as it is adaptive and levels up and down based on student performance and leads to mastery.

Now I am on a “mission” – everything we read tells us our students are lacking number sense. I believe this app is a fabulous tool to remediate those deficits. I have no vested interest in this app except that I am one of those people that has to solve problems and when I think I have found possible answers, I have to share that with others. Our kids are too important not to share---which is why I love reading blogs! I am asking for teachers to simply read the research and then try out the app and give me feedback---or give the feedback yourself to the developers. I am that convinced. I am not a salesman and I feel quite strange in this new role I have taken upon myself…but I have nothing to lose, or gain, except knowing that maybe we can have an enormous impact on our students!

If you have any questions, please e-mail me at tatergraderswife@yahoo.com Check out the app at www.nativebrain.com – you can find the background of the developers and read about the research behind the app. You can also watch a video on that site or go to these YouTube links:

Hi Scipi
I read a comment you left on another seller's "Ask a Question" bar - here you spoke of putting a copyright sign on all of your work - bottom corner I believe you suggested. I notice you use word docs not pdfs; So my question to you is, do you think it is a level of protection even though someone could delete the copyright logo? I like to provide both pdfs and word so that the buyer can cut and paste if they want to. I'm just wondering what your thoughts are as I notice that some buyers only sell pdfs.
Thank you for your time

I sell only PDF's except for my tests which I feel teachers should be allowed to edit to meet their needs. Just put the copyright on your work, then save as a PDF. As for my tests, I ask the buyer to leave the copyright info on the document, but I can't guarantee that they will.

Hi Scipi,
I've been reading the discussions about copyrighting our products and I'm still never sure about the creative commons insert-I think it allows more than I'd like to allow. It could just be me not understanding. I really like the way you've worded your copyright on each of your products and wondered if I could use your wording on my products, as it states clearly what I want to say?

BTW, your blog is amazing! How do you find the time to keep up with the marketing aspects and teach. I'm retired and doing after-school enrichment, and still find it difficult to keep up with all the marketing avenues available. Joining the discussion boards is about as far into the water as I've ventured. I've decided you're my role model!

If you'd prefer, my email is p.kranz@me.com
Thanks!

Pam - Feel free to use the copyright statement as you want. Everyone is welcomed to it. I am retired as well, but teach six hours at the local community college - math. I also babysit three of my grandchildren one day of week. I love everything I do; so, somehow I manage to keep up. It is fairly easy when you enjoy it....but as for ironing, well....it does get done, but not ASAP! My husband also teaches, but he is a great help and supporter. I couldn't do it without him. :>)

Laura Bogush  (TpT Seller) re: Number Tiles: FREE Problem Solving Math Activities for Grades 5-8
Hi Scipi!

Thanks again for providing me with feedback on my freebie and being my very first follower. I've only been on TpT for a week now, but I'm learning a lot and making progress!

I just looked around your store and reviewed some of your free items. Your products really do have the "wow factor"! It helps to look at such terrific examples. I loved teaching math when I was in first grade and followed a constructivist "hands-on" philosophy by using lots of manipulatives. Your activities are right up my alley!

I also looked around your blog. It's terrific too! I put a link to your blog my website that I use when teaching teachers about technology. It would be a helpful resource to many teachers, and I'll be sure to mention your blog to math teachers who take my classes.

Thank you so much for all of your help and encouragement. Slowly but surely, I'm getting my store stocked with my own creations. This is a great outlet for me. I might be retired, but I'll never stop being a teacher at heart.

Hope that you are enjoying a great day!

Hi Scipi,

Thank you so much for taking the time to comment on my materials. I am working on my freebies right now. :) I will be honest, I don't put as much effort into my freebies as I do the materials that I actually sell. But I definitely can see why it's important since that gives teachers an idea of the quality of my materials.

You work is fabulous! Love your stuff! I look forward to working with you more and learning more from you as we go along.

Thanks again and Happy Easter!

Do you teach Elementary Math at the college level? I love your Math Word Wall and have it in use. We are not Common Core yet in Louisiana but I am moving in that direction because the next school year is when we start I am told. Do you have any sites that are geared to Common Core that I could reference for my work? Also, thanks for that 4.0 on my RICE free product. I am following you and currently doing the 2nd grade math work for my school. I have a few posted on here but no sales yet and I am not sure why. Perhaps because it is Smart Notebook and I travel across the strands. I will learn but you are an inspiration to me. Thanks, Althea Young

It seems like I teach elementary math to my college students. They were unable to pass the test to take College Algebra. In fact, most of their math skills are terrible. We start at the beginning, and it is suprising how quickly they learn when I use manipulatives. Most have had horrible math experiences; so, one of the major things to overcome is their test anxiety level. I just love my job!!!! My husband's school is looking at Common Core, but I really know little about it since I am teach at a college. If he comes across any worthwhile sites, I'll let you know. Yes, Smart Notebook is something that not too many teachers have, including me. I just got an Elmo, and it is 100% better than any overhead.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have been teaching since "the earth cooled". My husband is a teacher as well, and together we have over 75 years of teaching in the elementary, middle school, high school and college areas. My focus is mathematics while my husband's is science. We never want to do anything else because we love it! My teaching style is hands-on and energetic while using diverse teaching strategies. I try to teach ordinary things in extraordinary ways.

MY TEACHING STYLE

For the last five years I have taught at the college level working with "mathphobics" and elementary teachers to-be as well as with teachers who are in the Transition to Teaching program. I have taught Math Methods, Science Methods, Developmental Math, and Algebraic Concepts as well as supervising student teachers and being a peer coach. I just began teaching a new class called "Math Study Skills" which is a one hour course on how to study math. Students are always surprised that studying math is so different than studying for other subjects.
