The lesson is designed for any short story. The teacher may select stories for the students and/or the students may select their own. The Collaborative Group component of the lesson states, "Give each group an identical pre-selected story." Then, in Independent Practice, they may select their own short stories to read. The response journal activity is designed to give the students practice in identifying and using the common academic literary terminology/vocabulary associated with the genre of the short story.
