I purchased this unit in 2007. I found it so helpful that when we studied The Outsiders, I purchased again from Secondary Solutions. The lesson formats are clear and concise. Students develop a routine when studying the text and strategies align with the Common Core. Excellent resource! My student population is special education, 6-8 in a day-treatment setting. I was able to modify lessons easily.

It was a wonderful package the information was easy to teach on each student reading and comprehension level. This is amazing for its coverage of ideas in the novel and integration of a variety of reading and writing standards! The only thing I add is related readings to incorporate other genres at the same time. Some of the worksheets I turn into activities where students can move around, but still the work of the activity is done for me. Well worth the price!

It is different, although the vocabulary for writing, and the structure, are the same. Essay Apprentice is meant as a scaffold to Essay Architect. Essay Apprentice is for lower-level students or those middle/high school students who are struggling to write even one or two paragraphs for an essay assignment.

This site says 8th grade. When I go to Secondary Solutions it says 5-7 and only provides the common core alignment for 5-7. I was looking at doing this with 8th grade and need the 8th common core alignment. Is it available?

Hi there! I am not sure where you are seeing 8th grade, however it can be used up to 8th, depending upon the students' level. It is aligned to Common Core 5-7, and not 8th. The guide would not specifically be addressing 8th grade, but the activities and worksheets may be considered challenging enough. There is no Common Core alignment for 8th grade.

The appropriateness of the tasks of our Literature Guide will depend upon your students' abilities. Haven't received an answer yet, but I did find where I can get the additional license. Not sure I need it yet, but wanted to make sure if I do that I was able to get it. We are getting a new special needs teacher next year. I am giving her a list of the books I read with my students. When she reviews the list and lets me know specific books she will be using with my lessons I may be back to get the additional license. Thanks

I am submitting a power point presentation for a unit on ELA and I can't find a cohesive copy of Common Core State Standards. The one issued by the state doesn't have the numbers I'm accustomed to, like W.7.1. ONLY your publication in Common Core has the numbers I'm talking about. Could I please use your numbers to specify which Standards I'm citing? I don't know why the others don't have those number anymore. I can't imagine how to specify them without those numbers. I'd be happy to send you a copy of my presentation if you would like to see it.

Can you give me an idea of the timeline to teach this effectively? I'm teaching special education English to 8th and 9th graders, but I was hired mid-year. I'd like to take them through this and your 5 paragraph essay system. I know you can't evaluate them unseen, or do magic, but could I conceivably fit both systems into one semester? Or is it madness to even try?

Hello Mrs Blue! The answer depends on how much of the guides you wish to use. You can pick and choose some of the activities from Essay Apprentice to get them started. For example, you can start at the "Writing Paragraphs" section, then move into starting an essay. You could also skip the group essay and move into individual essays, then work into the Essay Architect program. It IS doable, but you would have to cut some things out. Hope this helps!

What is the difference between Architect and Apprentice? Would it be beneficial to purchase both? Or is one geared to a certain grade level? I teach Sped H.S. students with very poor writing skills/reluctant writers and am currently rolling over in to Common Core.

Hi there! Basically, I explain the difference between the two like this: If you have students who are able to write at least one or two relatively decent paragraphs, then you want Essay Architect. Essay Apprentice is for lower grades OR for students who are really struggling to write even one decent paragraph. Essay Apprentice takes them through the process of writing step-by-step, from learning how to write simple, fun things to writing a decent sentence, to writing several sentences into a paragraph, then to writing more than one paragraph. From there, they work to create an essay as a group, then on their own. Once they can write at least one or two decent paragraphs and kind of understand how to approach an essay, then Essay Architect takes over. It sounds to me as if your very poor and reluctant writers would do best with Essay Apprentice. There is a TON of repetition and scaffolding, which really helps those who are struggling or resistant. Hope that helps!

I have purchased a copy of your Lord of the Flies Common Core Guide, and I look forward to using it with my classes. I have a question about reproducing worksheets for my students. Our school received a grant for a 1:1 laptop initiative, so all of my students bring their laptops to class and most of our assignments are paperless. I often upload assignments to my class Website (through Moodle). Students send the assignment to OneNote, complete it, save it as a PDF, and upload it to a Drop Box online. Would it be acceptable for me to use the worksheets in the guide that I purchased this way? The activities would still just be for use by students registered for my course.

Hi! It's me again! I have found an exact copy of your study guide for Act II posted online. I hate to think anyone is re-posting your materials for free if that's not okay with you! I can't seem to link straight to it, but I searched "Why does Romeo claim he was able to get over the orchard walls" and found what I was suspicious of on the 6th link down (it's a .docx- titled "Act Two Comprehension Check"- surprise!). The answers aren't posted, but I still think it's disrespectful to your work to post those materials online for free if they were purchased to begin with.
Personally, I would have paid at least $150 for your unit plan on Romeo and Juliet, which says a lot for me, being on a first-year salary. I deeply respect how practical and accessible these resources are, and it angers me to think that anyone might misuse them.

I am very unhappy with my purchase of your CCS Aligned Unit Plan for Of Mice and Men. I do not think it is designed for the grades I teach 11th-12th and wrote to TPT Customer Service asking to be refunded. This is part of the response I recieved:

I am so sorry you are unhappy. Our materials for Of Mice and Men align clearly with the Common Core Standards for grades 9 and 10. As it is stated in the description, "The Literature Guide for Of Mice and Men contains 119 pages of student coursework, quizzes, tests, and teacher guides aligned with ninth and tenth grade English / Language Arts content standards." It was not created to align with grades 11-12, so I am baffled to why you would expect it to be designed for grades 11-12 when the description clearly says it is aligned for grades 9-10. ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION
Eight years ago, I found myself frustrated and exhausted. I was a relatively new teacher and a seasoned perfectionist who could not find the quality of materials I wanted to use in my teaching. One day, I decided to make a small packet of activities for use in teaching The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn to my Juniors. I spent a week gathering and writing, and it paid off! My students LOVED the activities and I loved having my days planned in advance. It dawned on me that I wasn't the only one spending far too much time writing and creating lesson plans, activities, worksheets, quizzes, and tests. I knew there were other teachers, new and veteran alike that were tired of feeling the pressure to teach the content standards and prepare their students for high-stakes testing. I decided that I would really work to create a great packet of activities, worksheets, and more, so that other teachers could have those materials ready in advance. I value literature tremendously, and knew that there was a particular challenge in teaching the required literature and the content standards. I was not willing to part with the great literature and cut it out of my curriculum--that was just not an option for me. I knew I had to somehow combine the literature together with the content standards and test preparation, and after many challenges and sleepless nights, Secondary Solutions was born. Since then, my mother and I (who is now a retired Middle School teacher with over 30 years experience, and a Teacher of the Year award under her belt) have written over 22 Literature Guides and Writing Guides for the Secondary classroom, and are working feverishly night and day (literally!) to complete more. It is an enormous challenge to run a small business and teach at the same time. I find both careers rewarding and challenging. My students love to see what I have been working on, and every time I use something new in the classroom, they ask "Did you write this, too?" To me, this is the most rewarding of all--not only do I have a classroom full of eager and interested students, but they are able to look up at me as a role model and inspiration. They know I hold them to a higher standard, and that they are my guinea pigs for everything--and they love it! They have learned not only the literature and content standards, but they have also learned how to critique a piece of work, give feedback and suggestions, and how to edit, often catching a typo or mistake! I couldn't ask for anything better.
