WordWright re: Academic Vocabulary Word Wall Cards (high utility)
Shari,
I'm just down the road from you, so I know you're aligned with CA standards. I'm a 6th Grade Language Arts teacher (first year) so I'm struggling with curriculum.
Can you tell me, please: are the words on your cards taken from the Coxhead list?
Marzano? Kate Kinsella? I am having a problem using a workbook for AcVoc because "it may not have been adopted by the district." Are there any OTHER AcVoc lists besides those mentioned above? Is there some way for me to see the whole Coxhead list without having to buy a pricey book? I just want to be sure that these are "THE" AcVoc words so I can go back to the powers that be and say, "These ARE what the District is using." Looking forward to hearing from you.

Thanks for the question. The words are what Kinsella would call "high utility" words or what some district's might consider Tier II words. They have proven to be very effective in helping students understand what is being asked of them and to provide students with academic vocabulary for responses (verbal and written). Additionally, they are for the most part/somewhat aligned with sixth grade curriculum; the majority of our sixth grade team (LA) teaches the words from the digital presentation. I also created an organizer which follows/aligns with the PREZI presentations.

Hope this answers your question. Not sure I understand what "I'm just down the road from you" is in reference to, working for the same district?

Hi Cindy,

Looks like 15 including the citation. It has several transitions within each slide.

Thanks for asking!
