Hi Shelley,

I have tried to preview your Early Finisher's Board and it will not open on my end? I am not having trouble with anything else, so I am not sure if it is my computer or the preview. Is anyone else having trouble trying to preview it?

Thanks,
Stephanie

Buyer re: The Grade 5-6 Early Finisher Board {The Complete 40 Weeks}
Hi there...I am very interested in purchasing the Early Finisher Board for 5-6 ( I teach math and science..but my partner teaches Lang Arts...I noticed it is geared towards math and language arts so she could use some of the materials too if I purchase). My question is....how do you reward students if they complete an activity? I don't know about grading it...so I thought I'd ask. Thank you for your time. Amanda Lindsay

Shelley Gray
Shelley Gray  (TpT Seller)
Hi Amanda! Most people find that getting to use the EFB is a reward in itself for the students. I do not recommend grading it...too much work for you, and not really the point of the EFB. Some teachers also like to give students a bit of time to get into small groups and discuss the activities that they've been doing...this will also serve as motivation for students to complete the activities so that they have something to share with their small groups. Overall, I really try to use intrinsic motivation rather than outside rewards. If you act like it's a big deal to be able to do the activities from the board, your students will be more likely to see it as a big deal as well :) Really, it does vary from classroom to classroom though. Once you start using it and see how your students react, you will better be able to decide if rewards are needed.

Hope that helps a bit. Thanks for your interest!

Have a great day,

I will be teaching 2nd grade in September and also have basic skills students. Considering that this is 2-4 grades, would it be too difficult for my basic skills 2nd graders? It looks Awesome, but I want to make sure before I purchase. Thanks!

Hi Kayla! This is perfect for second grade. The questions are very open-ended, so that students can work to their full potential, whatever that may be. Also, there are extra challenges built in that students can leave out if they are too difficult. Additionally, I have included a supplementary package that you can use to substitute some of the more difficult activities, if you wish.

Hi,
I was looking over your early finisher board and I love the idea; however, I was wondering if the general activity/instructions are put on the outside of the pocket and the questions are what they take back to their desk? I wanted to avoid students gathering at the board and instead make it more of a grab and go activity:). Thanks!
July 7, 2014 Report inappropriate comment
Shelley Gray
Shelley Gray  (TpT Seller)
Hi Chrissy! There are general instructions on the outside of the pocket so that they know what the task is. However, the general instructions are also included on the notebook strip that they take back to their desk with the activity. So basically they go to the board, quickly choose an activity, and take a notebook strip and activity sheet (if applicable) back to their desk to complete. To eliminate the "gathering" at the board, I like to set expectations that only 3 students are allowed there at a time. (others can read quietly while they wait for the board to clear). I also recommend going over the activities quickly every 2 weeks once you put them out. This way they will already have a sense of what is on the board, and will be quicker when they are deciding what to choose.

Hope this helps!

Hi a friend of mine gave me part of an item you made. However, I seem to be missing the directions. It looks like it is intended to be reading response cards. There are four boxes on a page. Six pages in total. The first box says, "Who is the main character of this story?" There is a cartoon character of a boy reading a book and smiling. If you recognize the product I am describing, can you explain how you use these cards? Thanks so much!

Thanks for your response Shelley (I don't seem to be able to figure out how to reply to your response!), that is helpful. Do the kids just have a notebook at home that the sheet gets done in? Does the notebook come back to school to be checked at all?
July 5, 2014 Report inappropriate comment

Shelley Gray  (TpT Seller)
There's actually no way to reply to the response, so this is the only way :)

Yes, they will need a homework notebook that would go back and forth from school to home. Whether or not you check it is up to you. I don't recommend checking every single activity (view it as practice and reinforcement instead), but you may want to do a "spot check" every once in awhile. Students can leave their notebooks open in the morning while they do morning work so that you can quickly scan them, or they can get together in small groups to discuss their homework activities and see what each other did while you circulate the room. The assessment part really totally depends on your style and your students. Personally, I prefer to simply view it as practice, and not cover their notebooks in red pen :)

I'm really interested in this product, but I wondered if you could provide me with a few more details about how you implement it?
July 5, 2014 Report inappropriate comment
Shelley Gray
Shelley Gray  (TpT Seller)
Hi there! Thanks for your interest. Are there any specific questions that you have about implementation? It is intended as homework (although there are many teachers using it for morning work or in-class assignments as well). I recommend sending an activity from the package home 2 or 3 times per week as a homework activity. It provides parents with goals and ways that they can help their children, so that they feel more comfortable with helping. Kids love it because it is interactive and hands-on.

Does this answer your question? Just let me know if there's anything else I can help you with.

Hi Briana! No, there are not many. You will need materials to make the board, but you can also use a bulletin board if you have an extra one. For a few of the activities you will need some newspapers, dice, playing cards and pattern blocks. However, if you don't have those materials on hand, you can also substitute another activity from the Supplementary Package (included in the Complete 40 Weeks). Hope this answers your question!

Hi there! I will be working on updating this resource throughout the summer, and at that time I will add the 11's and 12's. If you do end up buying now, you will be able to re-download the updated version once I finish it.

Thanks for your interest,

I received an email saying that through midnight tonight your TPT things were 28% off, but when I enter the promo code only 10% is deducted. Am I doing something wrong?

Hi Lara! My entire store is discounted at 20% off right now until midnight tonight. The promo code gets you an additional 10% off of the already reduced price. So the total comes to 28% off. Does that make sense? If you need more clarification, please let me know!

Have a great day,

Not a silly question at all! I put mine in a 3-ring binder. I like the white binders that you can insert a cover page into.

I have your packet "Engaging Spelling Activities." I love it, but I would like to make some changes to make it fit my class better. Are you able to send me the Word document rather than the PDF? Thanks for your assistance. You have some great products!

Hi Shelley,
I have enjoyed using your early finishers board for my first term and now I would like to continue and purchase more. However, you seem to only have the whole year or weeks 1-8 for the lower grades. Is there any way of purchasing a bundle that does not duplicate the first 8 weeks i have already purchased? tks

Hi there! Sorry, those are the only options that I have. The best deal is to buy the complete 40 weeks for $19.99. If you could email me at shelley_gray_@hotmail.com though, I do have another idea for you :)

Thanks and have a great day,

Hi Shelley,

Just bought your Complete subtraction and addition resource, it's fantastic! Just had a question for you however, I was looking through the Subtraction: Expanded notation strategy, and noticed that some questions have been blacked out (there are black squares instead of equations). For example, Pg 19 and 26 both ask students to solve the equations, but there are no equations there. Is it supposed to be like that? Thanks!

Hi Theresa! This sometimes happens when a person's Adobe Reader needs to be updated. Try updating to the lastest version of Adobe Reader. If you are on a Mac, be sure to use Adobe and not Preview to open the file. If you try that and it does not help, just let me know.

Thanks for your business! I'm glad you love it!

Have a great day,

Hi Shelley,
I have a question regarding compensation....When you have a problem such as 825-246 where the tens place is bigger number on the bottom....how do you use compensation for that, or can you use compensation. No matter how you round the number on the bottom is always going to be bigger where they have to regroup. I am just wondering if compensation would be the right strategy for this. I have other ideas but just wondering if I am missing something. Thanks

Hi Dianne! Depending on your students, they might be comfortable with using compensation, along with an extra step or two. For example, if they are comfortable with regrouping mentally, 25's and 50's can be fairly easy to work with. So they would think 825-250. Do 825-200 first to make 625, then 625-50 to make 575. Then add the 4 that were originally taken away to make 579.

Also, if your students have been taught a few strategies already, they might be able to come up with their own way to mentally solve this equation. I might do 825-200 first, to make 625. Then take away 25 to make 600, and then another 21 to make 579 (break the 46 into manageable groups). An empty number line can be really helpful for that sort of strategy.

You could also do 825-300 to make 525. Then add on the extra 54 that were originally taken away to make 579.

I would probably use an equation like this as a learning opportunity. Write it on the board and ask students how they could use mental math to solve it. Maybe they'll come up with 3 or 4 different ways, and that is fantastic! There is really not one right answer. As long as students are thinking strategically, that is the goal.

Hope this all makes sense and helps a bit! Good luck!

Hi Shelley,
I love the Early Finisher Board and I'm very interested in purchasing it but I'm from Australia and due to language differences its not appropriate for my year ones. I was wondering if there was any chance of purchasing an editable version?
Thank you,

Hi Shelley,
Me again... just wondering if you've been asked for this resource in French before. I am wondering if you're open to a deal... I could translate them for you to have in French and I could get a copy of each?
Let me know. Either way I plan on purchasing the strategy combo set.
Thanks for all the hard work.

Hi Tracey. Actually yes, I have had a few people ask. I had a translator set up to translate them, and then have had an issue locating my editable copy. FRUSTRATING (to say the least)! If I do happen to find it though, I will be working with a translator, but I would like to have a couple lined up. Could you send me your contact info to shelley_gray_@hotmail.com so that I have it for future reference (just in case)? If you do buy the units, and then I end up getting you to translate them at some point in the future, I would reimburse you, of course. Thanks for your inquiry.

Oh! I bet you are looking at the Mental Math Reference Guide? With your purchase, you should have a zipped folder. Inside the folder should be the Addition Units, the Subtraction Units, and the Reference Guide. Just try opening the folder again, and this time instead of choosing the Reference Guide, choose either the Addition or Subtraction folder. Let me know if you still need assistance! :)

Thanks,

HI Shelley,
so I just purchased Mental Math Strategies for Addition ad and Subtraction. I am very excited to use them but when I click on the link for the complete unit on teaching these strategies, it just takes me back to your page on the Teadher Pay Teachers website. Do I have to buy something else to see the Mental Math complete teaching units?
Thanks for your help!
