Hi Shelley,

Just bought your Complete subtraction and addition resource, it's fantastic! Just had a question for you however, I was looking through the Subtraction: Expanded notation strategy, and noticed that some questions have been blacked out (there are black squares instead of equations). For example, Pg 19 and 26 both ask students to solve the equations, but there are no equations there. Is it supposed to be like that? Thanks!

Hi Theresa! This sometimes happens when a person's Adobe Reader needs to be updated. Try updating to the lastest version of Adobe Reader. If you are on a Mac, be sure to use Adobe and not Preview to open the file. If you try that and it does not help, just let me know.

Thanks for your business! I'm glad you love it!

Have a great day,

Hi Shelley,
I have a question regarding compensation....When you have a problem such as 825-246 where the tens place is bigger number on the bottom....how do you use compensation for that, or can you use compensation. No matter how you round the number on the bottom is always going to be bigger where they have to regroup. I am just wondering if compensation would be the right strategy for this. I have other ideas but just wondering if I am missing something. Thanks
April 14, 2014 Report inappropriate comment

Shelley Gray  (TpT Seller)
Hi Dianne! Depending on your students, they might be comfortable with using compensation, along with an extra step or two. For example, if they are comfortable with regrouping mentally, 25's and 50's can be fairly easy to work with. So they would think 825-250. Do 825-200 first to make 625, then 625-50 to make 575. Then add the 4 that were originally taken away to make 579.

Also, if your students have been taught a few strategies already, they might be able to come up with their own way to mentally solve this equation. I might do 825-200 first, to make 625. Then take away 25 to make 600, and then another 21 to make 579 (break the 46 into manageable groups). An empty number line can be really helpful for that sort of strategy.

You could also do 825-300 to make 525. Then add on the extra 54 that were originally taken away to make 579.

I would probably use an equation like this as a learning opportunity. Write it on the board and ask students how they could use mental math to solve it. Maybe they'll come up with 3 or 4 different ways, and that is fantastic! There is really not one right answer. As long as students are thinking strategically, that is the goal.

Hope this all makes sense and helps a bit! Good luck!

I love the Early Finisher Board and I'm very interested in purchasing it but I'm from Australia and due to language differences its not appropriate for my year ones. I was wondering if there was any chance of purchasing an editable version?

Me again... just wondering if you've been asked for this resource in French before. I am wondering if you're open to a deal... I could translate them for you to have in French and I could get a copy of each?
Let me know. Either way I plan on purchasing the strategy combo set.

Hi Tracey. Actually yes, I have had a few people ask. I had a translator set up to translate them, and then have had an issue locating my editable copy. FRUSTRATING (to say the least)! If I do happen to find it though, I will be working with a translator, but I would like to have a couple lined up. Could you send me your contact info to shelley_gray_@hotmail.com so that I have it for future reference (just in case)? If you do buy the units, and then I end up getting you to translate them at some point in the future, I would reimburse you, of course. Thanks for your inquiry.

Oh! I bet you are looking at the Mental Math Reference Guide? With your purchase, you should have a zipped folder. Inside the folder should be the Addition Units, the Subtraction Units, and the Reference Guide. Just try opening the folder again, and this time instead of choosing the Reference Guide, choose either the Addition or Subtraction folder. Let me know if you still need assistance! :)

I have noticed a couple of people have mentioned many activities are too hard for the start of year one and my class ability is generally quite low. A lower pack is on my to-do list, but honestly my to-do list is huge right now! :) If your students are lower level, then in order to do the activities they would likely need a bit of help, whether that be parent volunteer or classroom assistant. Sorry that I can't be more help right now! Thanks so much for your interest, though!

I just looked up the measurements of the Mead composition notebooks and it looks like they are about 7.5x9.75. They should work fine for most of the activities. There may be a few where a piece or two needs to be put on another page, but I think for the most part they will be just fine!

Hi there! The Interactive Notebook resource that I have for 4.99 is not a homework packet. It is a resource that will supplement Interactive Notebooks in your classroom with activating, acquiring and applying strategies. So it is more for classroom use, while the Interactive Homework Notebooks are intended for home use (although they can be used in the classroom as well if desired). Let me know if you have any other questions.

Kathy W. re: Using Ten: A Mental Math Subtraction Strategy Unit
Hi Shelley. I have a question about Using Ten for mental math subtraction. Our district has adopted the My Math curriculum and for the most part I like it. We are suppose to be teaching the using 10 strategy this week and I am considering skipping this lesson. It just seems to be too difficult a concept for my first graders, and I don't want to confuse them. I understand using 10 for addition but for subtraction just seems to be too abstract for them. Also, we haven't done anything with place value yet so using the base 10 blocks would also be difficult. I noticed on your YouTube video (which, by the way, is very helpful) that you suggest that strategy for grades 2 or 3 and up and am surprised that the My Math curriculum introduces it in first. I am curious as to your thoughts. I don't want them to not be prepared for something when they get to 2nd grade. Thanks!
December 1, 2013 Report inappropriate comment
n/a
Shelley Gray  (TpT Seller)
Hi there! Well, here are my thoughts: YOU are the teacher and YOU are the one who knows your students the best. I am a huge advocate for not introducing too much, too quickly. Your students will benefit from learning a couple of strategies really well, rather than a whole bunch of strategies that they have not totally mastered. If the decision is up to you, then I would wait. Get them really practiced up with Counting Up/Back, Using Doubles, and Thinking Addition. Keep practicing, and reinforcing. IF you feel later in the year, that they are ready for a new strategy, then introduce it, but if not do not feel bad! You are doing your students a service by allowing them to master skills before introducing ones that are too hard/abstract.

Also, remember that one of the biggest goals of mental math is to create students who are mathematical thinkers. So by teaching them even 2 strategies, you are preparing them for future grades because they will be able to think and reason differently than students who have only been taught to memorize.

You sound like a really great teacher. Keep up the good work!

Shelley- I have a question that may be unusual, but how do your Mental Math Strategies tie in with the memorization of "timed" fact family type tests? Our math has been changing around some this year and I am wanting to use the mental math strategies (which I have introduced a little) but also we are doing the timed tests and I guess I am a bit confused, etc. Thanks so much!

Shelley Gray  (TpT Seller)
Hi Stephanie! I really do think that speed is important, and I believe that timed tests and mental math strategies can work together in harmony. Even with mental math strategies, memorization is always a goal for me and my students. Strategies are a starting point, but students who have memorized their basic facts are at a definite advantage, I think. This being said, learned strategies should always be something to fall back on if memorization is forgotten. So to answer your question, I would begin with strategies. When you introduce students to timed tests, get them to goal set and make it a fun experience. Encourage them to use strategies for the facts on the timed tests. You will likely find that the students who have memorized are not using strategies for the memorized facts anyways (these students will likely be faster at timed tests.) The one thing that I ALWAYS reinforce to my students is competing against themselves, not anyone else, with respect to being timed. Always try to beat your personal best, never someone else's personal best.

Hope this makes sense! I feel like I'm rambling a bit :)

Have a great day,

Shelley

I've posted the posters, but have an OCD question. I want to make a sign for the addition and subtraction above where I post them. What font did you use as the titles in the posters? I have a complex with making sure everything matches! :) Please let me know. Thanks! Michelle

Hi Michelle! Thank you so much for your nice compliment. I'm so glad that you're students are experiencing success! I'm pretty sure that I used Janda Manatee Solid for the posters (It's a Kimberly Geswein font). If it doesn't look right let me know and I will actually find my original file and take a look :)

Have a good night,

Buyer re: Multiplication Mastery: a Program for Basic Multiplication Facts
I like the nine's trick strategy in your freebie - does this pack have more of the strategies and tricks to help students remember the facts? Like double the twos to solve for fours? It would be great if the product went up to 12x12.

Hi again! :) Yes, the package is FULL of strategies (I am a huge believer in teaching strategies, so most of my math resources include them.) I will probably update this resource next summer, and at that time I will most likely include the 11's and 12's as well.

Have a great day,

Thanks for your interest,

Hi Shelley!
I am having trouble downloading the multiplication mastery program because it is a zip file. Do you have any suggestions?

Hi Kristine! All you should have to do is double click on the file icon, and it will automatically unzip. If you are still having trouble, please contact TpT Support. They are usually very quick to answer questions. Just copy and paste this link into your browser:

https://support.teacherspayteachers.com

Another thing that I just thought of: on the product page, right beneath the file type you can see a little link that says "How to Unzip Files." Here's the link to the Mult Mastery product page where you can find that.

Hope this helps! Let me know how you make out.

Hi Shelley!
Just wondering if you have ever considered sharing/creating report card comments? It's report card time again, and as always, I spend HOURS agonizing over what I want to say and how I want to say it! I have a feeling you could create a great resource for this! Just a thought! :)
Sincerely,
Karen Dunning :)

Hi Karen! Thank you for thinking of me; I'm flattered :) I have a pretty major project on the go right now, but I am going to think about this for sure! It probably wouldn't be something that I would do until next year (my to-do list is 2 miles long!), but an interesting idea for sure! I think I'll ask on my FB page sometime though, for those of you doing report cards soon.

Thanks, Karen! Have a great week!

Beverly K. re: Division Strategies: Using Strategies to Teach Basic Division Facts
I have just purchased your multiplication pack and spent every free second I have had putting it together. Can't wait to start using it tomorrow. My question is: is this laid out like that program, where the facts are divided into fact families or is this just a pack of division worksheets in which the fact families are just mixed together? If it is mixed, is it possible for me to arrange them so that they can be organized and worked like the multiplication pack?

Hi there! Thank you for the nice compliments. The Multiplication program is one of my all-time favorites and always worked SO well in my classroom! The division one is not laid out the same, but it focuses on strategies for learning the division facts. I think that you could probably arrange them similarly to the Multiplication program if you wanted to.

Have a great evening,

I think I missed this in the directions BUT in looking at the sheets: do I copy each of the activity sheet for each student? so if I have 25 students I make 25 copies of each activity because they write on and keep their work. Do you suggest this over placing in a dry erase pocket or making into a game which can be reused? Thanks for any insight.

Hi there! Personally, I make enough copies of the sheets so that each student can complete one and keep it in his/her notebook. (so yes, 25 copies for 25 students). However, if photocopying quantity is an issue for you, you could certainly try the page protectors and a dry erase marker instead. I have not done that myself, but I would love to hear how it works out for you if you try it!

Have a great day,

I purchased your Early Finishers Board for grades 3-4 last year to use, but then was moved to 5th grade. We are using it, but I find that it is too easy for most of my students. Is the 5-6 grade version different? I've read reviews of other TPT sellers who have different grade versions, but when people buy it, it is really just the same thing. I just want to check before purchasing. I love the Halloween set and how it had multiple difficulties. That is where I really noticed that may need to buy the next set up. Thanks for your reply!

Hi Tara! There are different activities in the 5-6 set. I do sell them together as a Combo Pack for $24.99 (the 1-4 and 5-6 boards), so if you would like I can sell you the 5/6 board for $5, since you already purchased the 1-4 board for $19.99. If you choose to go for this option, we will have to do it through my blog store since I don't have the ability to do coupon codes for TpT. Let me know if you want to go ahead with it. My email address is shelley_gray_@hotmail.com.

Thanks,

Cynthia K. re: Full-Page Base Ten Number Posters {for numbers from 0-100}
Hi Shelley--

These are positively fantastic! I just came from training and they want us to step up to using manipulatives as real world problem solving. I have these base ten cards and I am coloring them gold just like my base 10 blocks (it is exhausting but worth it I'm sure). I am going to wrap them around my room.

I have a request-- would you please make a zero? The thinking out there is that everything should start with zero rather than one....

Thank you

Hi there! Most likely it is because your Adobe Reader needs to be updated. The other reason that this often happens is if you are on a Mac and using Preview rather than Adobe to open the file.

If you still can't get it to work, please let me know.

Have a great evening,
