Hi Shelley,
Last year, I purchased your Mental Math packets for Counting On and Adding Doubles. This year, I purchased your packet for Making Ten (addition). From your original version, I have been using the title page as a cover for a little booklet I have made for my students. Would I be able to get a copy of the original title page for Making Ten to use as a student booklet cover? The original version works well for that. Thanks, Linda lott@telus.net

Good morning! I am a first grade teacher, formerly PK teacher. I just finished my masters in May (yea!) with a degree in Mind, Brain and Education – a subfield of education. The first program was started at Harvard by Howard Gardner and Kurt Fisher (if you haven’t read any of Kurt Fisher’s work on Skill Theory and you are interested in the cognitive processes involved in learning, you must read his work!)

Cut to the chase. When I moved up from PK to 1st I was shocked by my students’ lack of number sense. I spent an entire year and all last summer trying to figure out what was missing. In Nov I attended a workshop that on number sense. When I heard the presentation I recognized all the “big” names of the research I had been investigating. The workshop was a training session for an iPad app (Native Numbers). It seemed like a valid, robust app, but I am a skeptic and had to know: would this really work.

I am here to tell you that with the first skill set I saw every cognitive model of learning embedded in this app. I also realized that this app is more than a learning tool; it has built in formative and summative assessment as it is adaptive and levels up and down based on student performance and leads to mastery.

Now I am on a “mission” – everything we read tells us our students are lacking number sense. I believe this app is a fabulous tool to remediate those deficits. I have no vested interest in this app except that I am one of those people that has to solve problems and when I think I have found possible answers, I have to share that with others. Our kids are too important not to share---which is why I love reading blogs! I am asking for teachers to simply read the research and then try out the app and give me feedback---or give the feedback yourself to the developers. I am that convinced. I am not a salesman and I feel quite strange in this new role I have taken upon myself…but I have nothing to lose, or gain, except knowing that maybe we can have an enormous impact on our students!

If you have any questions, please e-mail me at tatergraderswife@yahoo.com Check out the app at www.nativebrain.com – you can find the background of the developers and read about the research behind the app. You can also watch a video on that site or go to these YouTube links:

I have read your extensive lists of signs. I do have one question. You list the signs in two columns. Is one column large signs and one
small ones? If so, which column shows the small signs? Or are both columns showing what is in the set in both large and small?

I posted this question yesterday but don't see it today. I do look forward to using your Early Finisher Board. However, I was wondering what do you do to make the students accountable for their work? I have some that will put down anything if they think I'm not going to grade it. I was wondering do you use it as extra credit or what? Thanks
May 23, 2013 Report inappropriate comment
n/a
Shelley Gray  (TpT Seller)
Hi Lisa! Depending on your classroom, there are many different options. Personally I don't recommend marking every single early finisher activity. This would take way too much of your own time. Additionally, the Early Finisher Board is simply meant to be extra, fun activities. So my personal belief is that if everything is being graded, it now turns into "work" and is less fun :) A few suggestions for making students accountable include:

- try meeting with groups of students once a week, or bi-weekly to see what they have completed. They can also look at what each other is working on. Discuss what their favorite activity has been, what was challenging, etc.
- keep a checklist of what students have completed. Although you are not "marking," if the students know that you are keeping some sort of record they will hopefully be more inclined to do their best work.
- try having a whole-class discussion when you have 5 or 10 minutes left in class (as a time-filler) where you have students show one of their favorite early finisher activities. Seeing other students work will be a motivator for many!

I'm a big fan of intrinsic motivation, rather than extrinsic, so I tend to try to motivate through directed praise, and methods like the suggestions above. I'm a big believer that not everything should be marked, as kids need lots and lots of engaging practice!

I hope this helps a bit! Basically, you need to try a few different things and see what works for your students.

Feel free to ask if you have any other questions. Have a great week!

I just have a quick question for you. I purchased both your addition and subtraction mental math packets and have been working my way through the addition packet. I absolutely love how you have everything I would ever need included in this packet, however, I am curious as to the duration of time you spend on each strategy as well as the total duration of time spent on the entire addition or subtraction unit. Since we are reviewing the easy mental math strategies (i.e. doubles, make ten, etc.) we really only spent a day or so on each but I just wanted to get an estimate on how long you would recommend teaching each one. Thanks so much for all your hard work. I absolutely love your stuff and have my eye on a bunch of other fun packets :)

Hi Katania! Thank you so much for your kind words. It sounds like you are on the right track. There are just so many factors that should go into deciding when to move on to another strategy. For instance, what grade are you teaching? If you are teaching grade 1, you will likely not teach all of them anyways, and focus on strategies like counting on, doubles and making ten. If you are teaching grade 3 or 4, then you will move fairly quickly through the easier strategies, and then focus more on ones like making multiples of ten and front end addition. When it comes to subtraction, you will probably find that the strategies are taking longer for students to master, just because subtraction is usually more difficult. The most important thing to remember is that it is more beneficial for students to master a couple of strategies, rather than whip through them all without developing mastery. It will also depend on whether or not you are doing mental math every day. So, I don't really have an exact answer for you, but you should stick with one strategy until *most* of your students have mastered it and can comfortably solve equations using it. As you mentioned this might only take a day or two for simple strategies, but it may take a couple of weeks for more difficult ones. Remember also that once a strategy is mastered, you will want to integrate them so that students are practicing choosing the strategy that is the most efficient and effective for the particular equation.

Another thing to remember is that you can teach addition and subtraction all year long, even as you are teaching other operations. For example, although you may be focusing on a multiplication unit, you can still teach students a mental math strategy for addition or subtraction, as long as you are giving them time to practice it in isolation.

I'm sorry that I don't have an exact answer for you, but I hope this helps a bit! I have had a couple of people comment that they thought it was taking too long, but the results were so worth it in the end that it really didn't matter! I hope that your students have similar experiences!

Hope you have a great day. Please don't hesitate to ask if you have any other questions.

Hi Katherin! I apologize for not getting back to you sooner. I didn't receive an email notification for your question and just noticed it! Sorry! Anyways, black smudges usually mean that your Adobe Reader needs to be updated. Try that, and if you still can't get it to work let me know.

Have a great day,

Shelley

Do you have anything on regrouping strategies with subtraction? My kids do very well if we use manipulatives, or even addition. Oh gosh subtractions though...that's a chore.

Hi there! I have an entire Mental Math subtraction collection that has been used with high success by many people. Students will learn 6 different strategies for subtraction (more effective than borrowing) and learn to use the most efficient and effective one. Just copy and paste the link below into your browser. Be sure to read the feedback as well to see what others are saying about it.

Hi there! Unfortunately I had to take them down as the Seuss corporation demanded that all Seuss-related items come down from TpT. Sorry about that!

Not a question- just wanted to say thank you again for all your hard work! I am using "Multiplication Mastery" again this year and my class is super excited! Not only are the kiddos pumped, but I am PUMPED that a big chunk of my numeracy block is all planned, copied, laminated and labelled with cute stickers and ready to roll! So nice to have such a fabulous 'go-to' unit for such a major part of our grade 3 curriculum! Thanks so much Shelley!!!!

Hi Shelley,

I am very interested in purchasing both your addition and subtraction pack however I teach in French and I was wondering if I could get an editable version so that I could translate it.

Thanks

Hi Stephanie! Thanks so much for your interest in my Mental Math units. Unfortunately I cannot provide editable files as it goes against the terms of use of the graphics that I use. I'm sorry!

Let me know if there is anything else that I can help you with.

Thanks,

Hi Shelley,
Let me first just say how much I love your addition and subtraction strategies packet! I am currently working my way through addition and will continue on through the subtraction one. Absolutely fantastice unit with everything I would ever need. I just have one request from you. As I was laminating the flash cards I noticed that two packets (one flash card on each) is missing the subtraction sign. I know I could easily add one in but I was wondering if you could possibly fix the error and upload them again. The first one is in the Using Doubles packet on page 56, and the second one is in the Using 10 packet on page 64. Thank you so much for your amazing work!
Thank you!

Shelley are you able to add a thinkmark that has on it: I already knew this
Use this bookmark to mark statements or ideas you already knew
and a text to text connection one

I can make them but I would like them all to look the same.
Thanks

Hi there.
Can you tell me if the tasks would work in overseas classrooms or is the language US specific? By that I mean if there are things like measurement tasks using miles, or gallons etc.
Thanks
