Being An Advocate
Part of Taking a Stand is learning to be an “Advocate.â€
Who knows what an advocate is?
An advocate is someone who speaks up for someone else. We’re going to speak up -- to be advocates -- for kids who are being bullied. We’re also going to be advocates for our community by speaking up and letting bullies know that their behavior is unacceptable in our community.
There are really three primary messages we want to give:
1. Bullying behavior is unacceptable in this community (school, house, neighborhood).
2. We do not want to be around people who treat others with disrespect.
3. We are going to report bullying that is on going, that we are unable to stop through our own efforts.

Target: I want you to respond using all the elements of communication.

Bully: Pretend to trip the other person and then laugh?
Target: How are you going to respond? Be sure to use eye contact, body language and clear language in your response. You might say, “That was not an accident. Leave me alone.â€
Why is it important to speak up, to take a stand for yourself? If you don’t speak up, how will people know how you feel?
What: This is a tool to measure correct usage of conventions in writing and to track improvement.
WRITING CONVENTIONS include spelling, punctuation, capitalization, grammar, paragraphing and legible handwriting. Conventions of writing are the elements that make communication easier. When the conventions are handled, all of your reader’s attention can be on what you said.
There are 3 types of scoring we will use:
1. Total number of words written – TWW___ Why do you think this matters?
2. Number of words spelled correctly – WSC___ Why do you think this matters?

4. This will show how well you did with punctuation, capitalization, and grammar. Why do you think this matters?

I have a Ph.D. in education with a specialization in youth at risk. I am a school improvement specialist in the public schools. I founded and continue to direct the Coalition for Children, a not-for-profit (501(c)(3)) organization in Denver, Colorado. I have spent the last 30 years developing curricula to provide effective, affordable programs that work. Amond the well-known curriculua I have authored are: The Safe Child Program - a comprehensive prevention of child abuse curriculum that enables teachers, families and children to intervene before abuse occurs, that gives children skills that make them less vulnerable. The Take A Stand Program is designed to stop patterns of bullying and interpersonal violence in all areas of the community. The Reach and Challenge Programs recognize the powerful forces on young people and adolescents and provide children with skills to make choices that empower their lives. The Recovery Program helps young people who have been abused to rebuild their sense of self and to prevent future victimization.
Immediate feedback and structuring learning so that students know: what they they need to learn, where they are, where they need to be, and a plan to get there. I am a total advocate of LEARNING BY DOING. I use role-play, scenarios and opportunities to apply learning in all of my work. I've been a classroom teacher, a special education consultant and a principal. I've developed and run a reading lab as well as a pre-school for inner city youth. These days I am a writer, trainer and school improvement specialist.
My shining teaching moments are always those times when I am learning the most from the kids. They are the source for all of my work and they always show me how to teach them best.
