Good morning! I am a first grade teacher, formerly PK teacher. I just finished my masters in May (yea!) with a degree in Mind, Brain and Education – a subfield of education. The first program was started at Harvard by Howard Gardner and Kurt Fisher (if you haven’t read any of Kurt Fisher’s work on Skill Theory and you are interested in the cognitive processes involved in learning, you must read his work!)
Cut to the chase. When I moved up from PK to 1st I was shocked by my students’ lack of number sense. I spent an entire year and all last summer trying to figure out what was missing. In Nov I attended a workshop that on number sense. When I heard the presentation I recognized all the “big” names of the research I had been investigating. The workshop was a training session for an iPad app (Native Numbers). It seemed like a valid, robust app, but I am a skeptic and had to know: would this really work.
I am here to tell you that with the first skill set I saw every cognitive model of learning embedded in this app. I also realized that this app is more than a learning tool; it has built in formative and summative assessment as it is adaptive and levels up and down based on student performance and leads to mastery.
Now I am on a “mission” – everything we read tells us our students are lacking number sense. I believe this app is a fabulous tool to remediate those deficits. I have no vested interest in this app except that I am one of those people that has to solve problems and when I think I have found possible answers, I have to share that with others. Our kids are too important not to share---which is why I love reading blogs! I am asking for teachers to simply read the research and then try out the app and give me feedback---or give the feedback yourself to the developers. I am that convinced. I am not a salesman and I feel quite strange in this new role I have taken upon myself…but I have nothing to lose, or gain, except knowing that maybe we can have an enormous impact on our students!

Unfortunately this can not be updated to scale. I could only fit about 3 letters per page and most words are more than 3 letters. I am very sorry. I did try for you all when I updated the alphabet set. Start with the alphabet with the kids and they will have an easier time with the words. I am also updating my monthly sets to scale. On page 25 the kids trace "we" but it isn't in the sentence to be filled in--is that the way you wanted the sentence to read--the kids have to add a word to fill in the blank but it is not the word "we" that they would have traced. Otherwise I like the product very much!

I just wanted you to know that I did the fruit loop necklace idea too and it was all that you mentioned on your blog! I did have to put tape on the ends of the strings but I also taped one end to their table---that helped a lot. I also had them put on 10, 20, 30, etc for every ten fruit loops. Yes it took time but very rewarding and I put them into ziplock bags to take home. The next day all of my kids could count to 100 by 1's and 10's! I am definitely doing it next year!

I purchased the number, zoo and alphabet snap cube center cards on Super Bowl Sunday (during the sale). I love the cards. I printed and laminated the cards for my small groups and centers. When I used the cards in my small groups, my snap cubes are just a little big bigger than the printed cards and the numbers look like a big blab to the students. Is there a way to print the cards so that the squares are bigger or can you make the squares bigger so that they fit the cubes? I teach PreK in a public school, mixed 3 and 4 year olds, and I have 14 3 year olds this year. So it would help if the cubes were more accurately matched to the actual size of the cubes. I apologize... I am actually I. The process of redoing my snap cube centers based on this feedback. I updated the alphabet set this last weekend... Do you have that update? The other two I will move to the top of the list to update for you. Some snap cube center cards can be made to scale and others cannot because they would be too big for a full sheet of paper. I believe those two will be ok though. :-). I will email you directly as well.

Hi! I too believe if you can write 0-9 then you can write any number. (I just told a parent that at conference.) With that being said, I find it very difficult to find any practice for y numbers after 10 for my preschoolers. Were you able to add the remaining numbers through 20? If you could replicate the worksheets from 0-9 for the teen numbers, that would work because you have so many different ones. That would offer lots and lots of practice for the teens through 20! Love ur work and the freebies, too!!

Well like for the number 15 if I put the one and and five I felt as if we were not saying the one was a 10. So I stopped because it did not feel right. Do you think that would be ok? Hi there - I started your spelling unit and LOVE it! I did find one typo though. On the Spelling List #3, the "red words - stop and think" is at the top on the page, on top of the border, instead of right above the red words. Can you make that revision before I use it next week? Thanks! =-)

Hi. I just purchased this set and I was wondering why the book print a is used on the 'a' page? Also, the 'red' page is missing its tracing element. I was also surprised to see the mixed mode of d'nealian and standard between the large word and what they are tracing (My district does not use d'nealian, so for me, standard form is ideal). I'm not trying to be picky, just thought I would ask. I've loved your other products, but was a little bummed with this one.

Hi. I have purchased this and today, I tried to print them, however the numbers from 10-20 are squished together?? Numbers 1-9 look fine, but for some reason the rest you cannot read the number. It looks that way in the file before I print as well. Help!!!

I went and opened it and it is not squishing them for me. I will go ahead and change the font for you to see if that helps. I would say maybe it's a ADOBE thing but if the first pages came out fine for you? IDK. But let me change the font all together and see if that helps!

You know... :-) I tried to make it look like a Snowy Owl as best I could. I had trouble because to make it have the white and gray it would have lots of small pieces. I guess you could do it on gray instead of brown. Some people may not have gray construction paper though. I will add that to the paper as well though. I think without having lots of small pieces to cut that this would be the best option.

The description state it covers polar bears, walrus, snow owls and snow fox. It also has a penguin in there as many people do penguins at this time too.

This is awesome! I have thought about doing this with my cubes, but haven't tried it yet. I love the idea of having cards to look at. I've had my students do this with Legos as well, but it's sometimes hard for them because I've never made any models for them to look at. Do you have anything like this with Legos, or, do you have the capability to make something like this with Legos?

TEACHING EXPERIENCE
