I just saw your profile on the first page of TpT's website and I just had to tell you your icon photo is soooo cute! I had a black lab but we just had to put her down this past Friday. She lived a very loved 14 year life so no regrets!

I'm not sure which "Transitional Readers" set you are referring to. I have the 1&2 grade set which are what I used to use when I taught in those grade levels. The strategies are the strategies I used in my classroom that aligned with my school objectives. Though they are not a Daily 5 product I did use them along with it and they follow the strategies used on the CAFE board.
The main difference in the CAFE Menus lie under the "E". For kindergarten I use "Expand Print Awareness", whereas the first and second grade set use "Expand Vocabulary". The strategy cards align according to the grade. If you are interested in seeing which strategies are in the set, you can look at the preview and they are listed.

Hi! I am a Kindergarten teacher here in Texas. I have a question for you. Does your school use CSCOPE for curriculum? If so, how long? Our district just rolled it out for us to begin using it. I love it, but many of my colleagues are overwhelmed and do not like it at all. Did anyone on your faculty have the same problems? Can you tell me how your school overcame the issues? Of course these questions are assuming you do use it. I really appreciate any help you can give me.

It has been my experience that any time a new program is chosen by a district that there are those that love it and others that hate it. Its all a matter of making it work for you.

I just printed out your reading strategy cards for first and second grade --the ocean theme ones.
On your list of things included it said there was a card for Good Fit Books but it isn't in there!
is there some way I can get that card? It is a pretty important one. I love the rest of them. I just laminated them all. They look great. At first I thought I dropped it somewhere but when I scrolled back through the file there is no Good Fit Book card in that packet that I can see. Please advise.

-Do the strategy cards you made for 1st and 2nd grade include the strategies you have for kindergarten? I really like the print awareness strategies but would also love to have more strategies for vocabulary for the second half of the school year.

The 1&2 grade set include all of the same strategies for Comprehension, Accuracy, and Fluency with the additional strategies needed for upper grades. However, they do not include any of the Print Awareness Strategies that fall under Expand Print Awareness. The 1&2 set only comes with the Expand Vocabulary strategies instead.

My fault, and I am very happy to buy the First/Second Grade set as well, but I'm wondering...does the 1&2 set contain all the strategies in the CAFE book, or will I have to supplement that set as well? Not a problem, it should contain all of the strategies. I didn't use the book to create them because they are my own product. That said, I have used Daily 5 in my room for five years and I included all of the strategies I use. If you find that one is missing, it does contain the blank cards to make the few extras you may need.

I downloaded this file and tried to "open with" adobe reader on my MAC computer. It won't open and says that it is because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded) when I try to open it in Word it is very blurry...Please help. this is a daring newsletter and I would love to be able to use it after purchasing it. My plan though is to have the students names on the board and to have them put their choice by their name. The hope is that it will provide a quick check for a sub or myself as to where students should be while simultaneously giving them the opportunity to mark their choice and give them some ownership in the process. We will see how it works. :-)

My world was kind of turned upside down a couple of weeks ago when I got engaged...planning for a new year, writing my dissertation for my PhD and now wedding planning has put me a bit behind. The 1&2 set has strategies for vocabulary expansion whereas Kinder focuses on Print awareness. There are also differences in the chunks and word families included in the 1&2 set.

Yes, each design comes in both a Kindergarten or a 1&2 grade set. The CAFE toppers are different as well. The reason for this is that we use Expand Print Awareness for the "E" in CAFE instead of Expand Vocabulary. Everything is available in either group. Hope that makes sense. :-)

Thank you! The kindergarten one and Emergent Reader are the same. The only difference being that I haven't changed the name over. :-) I started with one to differentiate for Kinder vs. Grades 1&2 and I need to go back and change all of them. :-)

•Know to start reading at the top of a page.
•Know sentences and words are read left to right.
•Know return sweep when reading a sentence
•Word by word matching
•Identify front and back of book
•Understand concept of a word.
•Know there are spaces between words

•Know the meaning of a period.
•Read different types of books.
•Know where to start reading.

I have been a teacher for the past nine years. In that time I have had opportunities to teach at two different campuses in a school district near Fort Worth, Texas. In the time, I have taught kindergarten, first, second and fourth grade. I have my Bachelors in Elementary Education and my Master's in Educational Administration.
