This unit has been so helpful already. I was finding many mistakes of this sort in my students' writing. The included definitions for a bulletin board are a great reference.

Very nice lesson format and ideas for persuasive letters. It gave me some ideas as my ESL students worked their way through a persuasive letter. Thanks.

This lesson plan was absolutely wonderful. I used it with my 3rd graders and they really connected with it. It was well worth the small investment!
Thank you!

This product is not a bad one but with a $6.00 purchase price it seems you can get much better for less money.

This form was not helpful. It just a graphic with no suggestions to lead the discussion. It is definitely not worth $2.00

Rubric is hard to read and uses a poor choice of font.
I think if you're having the students make a value judgment, saying "Circle the number that ACCURATELY reflects how you think you did in this area" doesn't work without a WHY. I was thinking of using this as a peer review rubric rather than letting the teacher full out so much.
I do like some of the headings.

I found this lesson a little too specific to a particular book for my liking. The students really needed to have read the book you selected in order to understand the lesson. That's why I rated it low in practicality. I was looking for a more general mini-lesson for the price.

I'm sorry you found this lesson too specific for your liking. In the product preview one can see that the text used is Jacqueline Woodson's The Other Side. This picture book is one that can be borrowed from a library and read aloud to a class in a short period of time to make the lesson effective.

What a wonderful idea! You made very "fuzzy" process clear and understandable to even my most concrete learner. The kids had a great time making their own timelines (action and thought) using Kidspiration software.

Didn't print in the write format - lines were off. I thought I would be getting something more useful. --Bummer!

Great resource! I tweaked slightly by replacing the word narrative with the word piece so I can use it with any type of writing. I also added P is for purpose to address that aspect of the writing. Thanks!

I haven't used this packet in my classroom yet since school is not in session. I am confident from the information provided that I will have a better way to assess the poetry my classes will write. I am excited to get started!

Provides a basic format that is clear to the student. The student who has difficulty with abstract thinking can use this form for tangible facts and evidence he/she needs to comprehend.

Both this and the craft table for Those Shoes are exactly what we need right now... thank you!!!
We are identifying mentor texts at each grade level to enhance our teaching of the "Units of Study for Writing". Do you have any other suggestions for Mentor Texts? I didn't know about this one, but I purchased Those Shoes at Teachers College when I was there for the August Reading Institute.
THANKS AGAIN FOR YOUR GREAT RESOURCES!

Question more than a comment. How can I find the grade specific form? There is one download for Third - Sixth.

This is for fifth grade, but you can adapt/modify the questions if your students' ability level is above or below what is written here.
I hope that helps.

This script would be very useful to a new teacher. It is a good minilesson on an important skill, however, I think calling it a lesson plan is misleading. I expect much more from a true lesson plan than what is in this script.

This is an script of a minilesson rather than an outline of how to conduct the lesson. It would make a good example of modeling for a teacher who isn't sure what to say to the students when modeling reading strategies. Knowing that this is more like a script than a lesson outline makes a difference.

Thanks for your feedback Renee. It's definitely scripted, but teachers can feel free to change the demonstration text if they wish to use a touchstone text other than Journey.
