breannelavin re: The Odyssey by Homer: A Complete Unit for any Version
Hello,

I hope you are well. I purchased your unit and it is great. I have a question about the Mythology in Modern Times Project. Do you know of any particular resouce that the students can access to find modern connections? I was thinking about using the "low tech" version and am wondering if you have or know of any resource that students can use to complete this project in class? I really like the idea of the students making these connections and think they will really enjoy it. Thanks again!

Breanne,
Thank you for your purchase and for the positive feedback. This is how I complete the project: I spend some time giving students background on the gods with the slide show and handouts. Then, I send them home to find a god/goddess and product and to do their research. I give them half of a block (40 minutes) to complete the slide in the template I have set up. We have access to laptops and to computer labs. It is actually very easy to find ideas just by "Googling". For me, part of the process is for kids to evaluate what they find - does the information fit the task? Is the product appropriate to the task?

I would encourage you to partner with your librarian. I know mine is a wonderful resource. He will pull a cart of resources (books) for students.

I hope this helps. Please let me know if you have any other questions. Feel free to email me - spwrobleski@gmail.com

kelleyg17 re: Oedipus the King by Sophocles: A Complete Unit Plan
Does this unit include daily lesson plans?
January 17, 2013 Report inappropriate comment

The unit includes a suggested course of teaching. It does not include day-by-day lesson plans mainly because so many schools are on such different schedules. For example, I teach in 81 minute blocks. The unit lays out activities for prereading, during reading and post reading. I hope this answers your question. Please let me know if I can further help.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have been teaching English since 1996. I am a certified reading specialist and an English teacher. My experience ranges from 6th grade to 12th and spans a diverse range of learners in many different settings. I have taught in both NH and NY. Presently, I am an English Academic Services provider and English teacher at an Upstate New York high school. I service students in grades 9 - 12 who need English skills improvement with a reading and writing workshop style. I also teach core-area English classes. In 2011, I completed the National Writing Project's Invitational Summer Institute with Capital District Writing Project. I also write free-lance for www.teachhub.com.

MY TEACHING STYLE

Balanced literacy and student centered/teacher facilitated instruction is important to my teaching. I also value the whole student which is important to consider when teaching anyone anything. I strive to help students value texts for their literary value and not just based on if they "like it". I have found success in connecting literature to the present and real world through the use of supplemental articles, blogs, poetry and other texts. I also incorporate varied writing tasks into my daily teaching.
