I have been teaching English since 1996. I am a certified reading specialist and an English teacher. My experience ranges from 6th grade to 12th and spans a diverse range of learners in many different settings. I have taught in both NH and NY. Presently, I am an English Academic Services provider and English teacher at an Upstate New York high school. I service students in grades 9 - 12 who need English skills improvement with a reading and writing workshop style. I also teach core-area English classes. In 2011, I completed the National Writing Project's Invitational Summer Institute with Capital District Writing Project. I also write free-lance for www.teachhub.com.
Balanced literacy and student centered/teacher facilitated instruction is important to my teaching. I also value the whole student which is important to consider when teaching anyone anything. I strive to help students value texts for their literary value and not just based on if they "like it". I have found success in connecting literature to the present and real world through the use of supplemental articles, blogs, poetry and other texts. I also incorporate varied writing tasks into my daily teaching.
