First I want to thank you for sharing your work with teachers throughout. I use many of you works, in particular your Daily Word Wizard and Math.
I know you are probably trying to enjoy your summer break, so feel free to answer my question at your convenience. Could you explain how you use your word wizard for a week? I use my as morning(bell work) but would love to hear how you incorporate it in your classroom. Do you allow students to chose a set amount of questions daily or must the go numerically? Do you also discuss each day answers to questions? Any input you care to share will greatly be appreciated.

Good morning! I am a first grade teacher, formerly PK teacher. I just finished my masters in May (yea!) with a degree in Mind, Brain and Education – a subfield of education. The first program was started at Harvard by Howard Gardner and Kurt Fisher (if you haven’t read any of Kurt Fisher’s work on Skill Theory and you are interested in the cognitive processes involved in learning, you must read his work!)
Cut to the chase. When I moved up from PK to 1st I was shocked by my students’ lack of number sense. I spent an entire year and all last summer trying to figure out what was missing. In Nov I attended a workshop that on number sense. When I heard the presentation I recognized all the “big” names of the research I had been investigating. The workshop was a training session for an iPad app (Native Numbers). It seemed like a valid, robust app, but I am a skeptic and had to know: would this really work.
I am here to tell you that with the first skill set I saw every cognitive model of learning embedded in this app. I also realized that this app is more than a learning tool; it has built in formative and summative assessment as it is adaptive and levels up and down based on student performance and leads to mastery.
Now I am on a “mission” – everything we read tells us our students are lacking number sense. I believe this app is a fabulous tool to remediate those deficits. I have no vested interest in this app except that I am one of those people that has to solve problems and when I think I have found possible answers, I have to share that with others. Our kids are too important not to share---which is why I love reading blogs! I am asking for teachers to simply read the research and then try out the app and give me feedback---or give the feedback yourself to the developers. I am that convinced. I am not a salesman and I feel quite strange in this new role I have taken upon myself…but I have nothing to lose, or gain, except knowing that maybe we can have an enormous impact on our students!

First of all, your work is amazing - and I love everything you do!! I can't imagine where you find the time to do such grand work !! I have a question and a request. What is the difference between Weekly Math Magic and Math Mania Weekly? They seem very similar to me. My request: will you make an editable copy of Weekly Math Magic for purchase? My state (Texas) doesn't do Common Core, and we only have 6 weeks in our reporting period. SO, I would like to add my own activities that go along with the series we use.

I've never heard of that happening before - it prints fine for me. I would try two things - first make sure your adobe reader is the most current version and if it is, I'd suggest printing it from another computer. Sorry you're having trouble - hope that helps!

I'm unable to print out any of the June and July pages. Adobe keeps saying that no pages are selected and to contact the creator of the PDF. I was looking at your weekly word wizard set and really like the way it hits the third grade skills for the beginning of the year. Can you share some details of the strength of growth from sets one through four? I was hoping there was a preview from each of the sets because I want to make sure the work is strenous enough for the growth that normally occurs throughout the year. The thumbnails give you an idea of each set, but the format and the way the questions are asked is consistent through the entire 4 sets. They are more difficult for the kids in the beginning of the year simply because they don't often know all of those skills as they start the year. Then as they learn each skill it gets a bit easier for them to complete each set independently. They're really meant to help you hit each skill each week so that they remain fresh for the kids. So in essence, I suppose the questions don't get harder throughout the year (as they do in the math set) However, I did recently make a new set for 2nd grade that are CCSS aligned where the questions do increase in difficulty (mostly in the way they are posed to the kids) and I'm planning on making a set like that for 3rd over the summer. You can give set 4 a try with your kids and see how they do with it in regards to the difficulty level. I hope that that helps!

A decameter is 10 meters, decimeter is 1/10th of a meter. So it is supposed to be decameter for this (in either case though, the answer would still be false)

Hi, I am interested in purchasing your 2nd Grade common core assessment packs for ELA and Math. My problem is that in PA they made a few changes and numbered the standards differently. I didn't create them in Word and I really can't send them in an editable format because of graphics/fonts licensing. But if you can send me a list of changes, I'd be happy to customize them for you! Here in Florida we had to number ours a bit differently too. Hope that helps.

I'm looking for a product that I think I saw on your blog. It was about common types of information that students should know (I remember 9 innings in a baseball game specifically!) I think it was similar to a calendar type task card unit...but I can't quite remember. Do you know what I'm talking about? I've been searching all over the web for it!

(This won't open through Active Inspire or Mimeo Software, it's specifically for Smartboards) See the feedback comment too. I want to be sure we fix this for you! :)

Not sure if you would be interested in adding a Student Data sheet but my students have been tracking which questions they get right and wrong each week. Then, they refer to the standard list you have included to see what they are having trouble with. So if they notice that they have missed # 10 several times they can see that they need to work on capitalizing proper nouns.

I know you said you are busy! I totally get it... However, when you get the September and October calendar task cards, would you please post them ASAP!??I am anxious to get them made for the fall. I have a room mom who is willling to cut and laminate all of my "stuff" !!! Thanks- it's only because your stuff is so dang cute and very useful in the class. One of my students found a mistake on your math second grade CCCS packet. On 2.MD.10 the graph on the bottom shows favorite sports and it's about recycling. At least I know she reads everything!!!:)
