mslucas619 re: Persuasive / Opinion Writing Unit (Designed for Common Core)
The common core language does not call it persuasive writing anymore. If I purchase the document can I change it all to opinion? We would like to purchase it today. Thank you.

Of course - feel free to call it the Opinion Writing Unit. That is what I call it too. I include both names because some still use the older name "Persuasive". I am glad it will be a useful unit for you. This one is my favorite!

Rose Mary Betancourt re: Persuasive / Opinion Writing Unit (Designed for Common Core)
do you have the common core standards for this unit?

Yes. Here they are...
ELACC3W1: Write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons.
a. Introduce the topic or book they are writing about, state an opinion, and create an organizational structure that lists reasons.
b. Provide reasons that support the opinion.
c. Use linking words and phrases (e.g., because, therefore, since, for example) to connect opinion and reasons.
d. Provide a concluding statement or section.

These also apply...
ELACC3W4: With guidance and support from adults, produce writing in which the development and organization are appropriate to task and purpose. (Grade-specific expectations for writing types are defined in standards 1-3 above.)
ELACC3W5: With guidance and support from peers and adults, develop and strengthen writing as needed by planning, revising, and editing. (Editing for conventions should demonstrate command of Language standards 1–3 up to and including grade 3.)
ELACC3W7: Conduct short research projects that build knowledge about a topic.
ELACC3W10: Write routinely over extended time frames (time for research, reflection, and revision) and shorter time frames (a single sitting or a day or two) for a range of discipline-specific tasks, purposes, and audiences.

If you need anything else, just let me know.

On these cards at a common core level ?

Yes they are. For example, 3rd grade CC standard RL5 wants students to refer to parts of stories, dramas, and poems when writing or speaking about texts... , standard RI1 wants students to ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of text... and more. These response cards go perfectly with these and several more CC standards, not just in greade 3, but in many grades. I hope this answer helped. Thank you for your question.

Hi Hillary,
Thanks for your purchase. I'm so glad you like the look. I love the fonts at Lettering Delights. I have also used KPM Doodles. I get a lot of my clipart from Digiweb Studio and Scrappin Doodles. Different artists sell at those sites, so sometimes I go to their sites. I'm sure you will find many things you'll love at those places.

FisherReyna Education  (TpT Seller) re: Fairytales, Folktales and Fables Element Detective
Susan... I so wish I had seen this earlier in the year. Would you please let me know what exactly is included in this packet? I need a little more description. No rush. I'll be happy to promote it too. I'm in Texas and the emphasis on genre for the new STAAR test is requiring teachers to really delve into genres (which I think is fabulous). Thanks Rachel at Fisher Reyna Education. :)

I'll be glad to give you a more detailed description. Included you will find:
*pages for whole class viewing describing each genre (fairytales, folktales, and fables)...a page for each genre seperately. Then for each genre listed above, a bulleted list of items usually found in each genre (a seperate page per genre). Seperate student checklists per genre. Recording Sheets for three specific stories: The folktale, The Paper Bag Princess by Robert Munsch, for the fairytale, Sleeping Ugly by Jane Yolen, and for the fable, The Tortoise and the Hare. Included is a venn diagram for comparing fairytales and folktales and a "fictional story elements" graphic organizer that can be used for all fictional pieces. Unit plans for 6 days, although it takes me about 10 days realistically. I hope this helps.

Our school has adopted a word work program called Word Journeys. This is a leveled phonics-based word work program. This program can be a bit time consuming, but if you have a 20 minute time slot about 3 days each week, you can make it work. During that first week, I give an assessment (found in the book) to determine at which level they should work. Then, based on that assessment, I group my students into about 4 groups. Words there Way is another similar program. Basically, you introduce a word sort list and teach the phonetical reason for the sort. The students practice these sorts, and finally you assess to see that they understand their sort. On TPT, I will be posting a group of word sorts with their phonetical teaching point in just a couple of weeks, if you are interested in a simpler version. I believe you are a "follower" of mine, so you will get an email notice. As soon as I post it, I will announce it on my blog too. I hope this answers your question. If you were thinking in terms of more "activities" to do with spelling words, send me another question. If you have any more questions, just let me know. :-)

Sure Pam,
I imagine this booklet will generate a great deal of traffic. I have also spent this entire spring break learning about blogging, facebook, pinterest, etc. I picked up Charity Preston's video course. It is well worth it if you haven't gotten it yet. My guess is though, that you have. Let's like each other's FB pages so we can contact through there.

There is nothing more frustrating then when technology doesn't work , but I am so glad I was able to help you resolve your problem! Now, you can enjoy watching your students have a great time playing as they learn about Synonyms! If there is something you are looking for and don't see it let me know.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I am a 2010/2011 Teacher of the Year. I have 16 years of teaching experience, most of those years in 3rd grade. I have taught many EIP Reading students, EIP Math students, and ESOL students in addition to general classroom students for most of those years.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I believe the workshop model is the best way to teach students to learn. This provides instruction as well as practice in a gradual release model. I believe in using data to determine instruction. I am a strong supporter of teaching in small groups. I believe the small group model provides the best results for success across all content areas, not just in reading. To engage my students, I often use games to reinforce a new skill, or for practice of an older skill. I know how to make learning fun, so that students actually ask for more!
