Hello,

I use your daily math and language as a warm-up for my Resource class. I can't find the month of May to purchase. Do you have other months available and also 4th grade?

Thank-you!

Hello Christine. These are brand new products that I am making month by month, while We are still in a school. (I will make several at one time when I am off for the summer.). I will have each months ready on or before the last Sunday of the previous month. That means Mays will be ready by Sunday April 27, if not before. As far as for 4h grade, my daughter is in 4th and her teacher uses these as well. They make perfect review. Once I have a complete set for 3rd, 4th grade will be in my To Do list. Thank you so much for your interest. If there is anything else, please feel free to ask.

I'm interested in this product, but am really having a hard time with spending $6 for 8 pages. You may get more buyers if you lower the price or add mor content. Just a thought. It looks like a great product! You could add pages where students need to compare line plots to other types of graphs/charts.

Hi Kimberli. I can understand your position. Although this product has sold very well for over two years, I can see that my customers would benefit from additional graphs. I will put that on my To Do list and notify buyers when it is updated. Thank you for you ideas.

Super! Good luck as you begin your career in education! I so wish Teachers Pay Teachers had existed when I first started! It would have save me so much time! You do have a tough job in regards to planning. I have several friends that teach different age groups and different subjects as SPED teachers - a definite challenge, but hopefully you'll find some helpful resources here to make the task of planning easier so you can spend more time with your students. Let me know if I can help.

Hi Susan! First, i would like to thank you for your contributions!
I love the thought of the way the Ancient Greek unit would go; my question is regarding it being geared toward a Smart Board. I do not have that technology in my class, or technology really at all except an old school overhead projector for transparencies. Will this still work having to give my students hard copies of the contents contained?

Thank you in advance!

Susan Hardin  (TpT Seller)
Yes. This is an adobe document and since it is electronically downloaded, it is available for the smart board but not limited to it. You can print the whole thing and them just copy he pages you want to distribute to your students, just like you would if these pages came out of a book. If you have a transparency projector or document camera, that would save you some money in copy paper or ink for use with some of he teaching pages that have pictures you might not feel necessary to print whole class sets of. I always make myself a complete printed version of all of my products. In addition, many of the pages are meant to be shared in print form with your students. I hope I've helped. Thank you for your interest and let me know if I can help you further.

Sorry, this does not include information about those people. It provides material to teach students the various ways the Greeks have influenced us with architecture and the basic foundations of our government. It does not include the deeper philosophical teachings of the philosophers you asked about.

Do the students fill in the same factor in the blanks and then the product? Or is that something I fill in, or maybe I am way off base. Just a little confused about the two blanks for each sentence.

Thanks.

Hi Codie. That is an important question. I believe I have gone into great detail about this on my blog, but I checked and it is not written on this product - but I will change that. Here is your answer... I hand out red pens for my students to record the number of the fact they are to assess, in the first blank all the way down the column. This is the same number in each problem. Then they turn their paper over, put down the pen, pick up the pencil and hold it high in the air as I set my stop watch (timer on my iphone) and say, "on your mark, get set, go!" Kids still on the 2's facts are answering problems with a 2 in it. At the same time, kids on their 4's facts are answering problems with a 4 written in it. If a student does not pass with 80% accuracy, I note that they will retest on that same fact next time and to study. I also send home an "Oops" or "Congratulations!" note in weekly papers, to keep parents informed. I hope this provided more clarity. Thanks for your question. Keep up the great teaching!

I want to be clear. This is an Adobe (.pdf) document, not a .notebook file. However, it is formatted horizontally so that it is fully viewable on a Smart Board. You will just click through as if it is a PowerPoint. There is no interactivity. As for the number of slides... the entire file is the same size. If you print, it appears as a standard sheet of paper, but it serves as a great visual teaching tool on the smart board. I hope this answers your question.

Buyer re: A Treasure of Word Sorts: Spelling for the Whole Year
Hi Susan,
I have stumbled upon your resources and LOVE them. I am moving to 3rd grade this year (coming from 6th). I see that this is for an entire school year. That would be great since I have so many new things to learn with a new grade. I noticed a couple of comments mentioned this being used for 2nd grade. Would you recommend it for 3rd grade?
Thanks,
Ami

Susan Hardin  (TpT Seller)
Hi Ami,
I teach 3rd and have for over 13 years now. These are perfect for third graders. You will always have a couple of students who fall below grade-level and may find some difficult. On the other hand there will always be a couple who are above grade-level spellers as well. To accommodate the below grade-level student, you can give him a longer time period to learn the words or cut the list in half, giving him half this week and half the next. For the above grade-level student, and possibly for the others as well, you can add 5 word wall words to their weekly sort list. Since you are new to 3rd, you may be unfamiliar with word wall words. They are those words we use often, but tend to be most commonly misspelled. For some, this is due to the fact that they do not follow common spelling patters or phonics. Word wall words for 3rd grade include words like: beautiful, because, pretty, city, community, there, their, to, two, too, friend, favorite, enjoy, said, about, again, are, what, where, winner, first, etc. I hope this is helpful. I hope you have a great year in 3rd. It can be challenging, but I love it! Go to my blog, 3rdgradegrapevine.blogspot.com, and you can read about a lot of different topics I've written, specific to my 3rd grade class. I believe you will find several topics that will help you prepare for this age. You can also leave questions or comments there, and I'll get back with you. Btw, thanks for your compliment, and I'm glad you "stumbled" here. :-)

Rose Mary B. re: Persuasive / Opinion Writing Unit (Designed for Common Core)
do you have the common core standards for this unit?
March 3, 2013 Report inappropriate comment
n/a
Susan Hardin  (TpT Seller)
Yes. Here they are...
ELACC3W1: Write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons.
a. Introduce the topic or book they are writing about, state an opinion, and create an organizational structure that lists reasons.
b. Provide reasons that support the opinion.
c. Use linking words and phrases (e.g., because, therefore, since, for example) to connect opinion and reasons.
d. Provide a concluding statement or section.

These also apply...
ELACC3W4: With guidance and support from adults, produce writing in which the development and organization are appropriate to task and purpose. (Grade-specific expectations for writing types are defined in standards 1-3 above.)
ELACC3W5: With guidance and support from peers and adults, develop and strengthen writing as needed by planning, revising, and editing. (Editing for conventions should demonstrate command of Language standards 1–3 up to and including grade 3.)
ELACC3W7: Conduct short research projects that build knowledge about a topic.
ELACC3W10: Write routinely over extended time frames (time for research, reflection, and revision) and shorter time frames (a single sitting or a day or two) for a range of discipline-specific tasks, purposes, and audiences.

If you need anything else, just let me know.

Rose Mary B. re: Partner Reading Response Cards
On these cards at a common core level ?
February 26, 2013 Report inappropriate comment

Susan Hardin  (TpT Seller)
Yes they are. For example, 3rd grade CC standard RL5 wants students to refer to parts of stories, dramas, and poems when writing or speaking about texts... , standard RI1 wants students to ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of text... and more. These response cards go perfectly with these and several more CC standards, not just in grade 3, but in many grades. I hope this answer helped. Thank you for your question.

Susan... I so wish I had seen this earlier in the year. Would you please let me know what exactly is included in this packet? I need a little more description. No rush. I'll be happy to promote it too. I'm in Texas and the emphasis on genre for the new STAAR test is requiring teachers to really delve into genres (which I think is fabulous). Thanks Rachel at Fisher Reyna Education. :)

I'll be glad to give you a more detailed description. Included you will find:
*pages for whole class viewing describing each genre (fairytales, folktales, and fables)...a page for each genre seperately. Then for each genre listed above, a bulleted list of items usually found in each genre (a seperate page per genre). Seperate student checklists per genre. Recording Sheets for three specific stories: The folktale, The Paper Bag Princess by Robert Munsch, for the fairytale, Sleeping Ugly by Jane Yolen, and for the fable, The Tortoise and the Hare. Included is a venn diagram for comparing fairytales and folktales and a "fictional story elements" graphic organizer that can be used for all fictional pieces. Unit plans for 6 days, although it takes me about 10 days realistically. I hope this helps.

Our school has adopted a word work program called Word Journeys. This is a leveled phonics-based word work program. This program can be a bit time consuming, but if you have a 20 minute time slot about 3 days each week, you can make it work. During that first week, I give an assessment (found in the book) to determine at which level they should work. Then, based on that assessment, I group my students into about 4 groups. Words there Way is another similar program. Basically, you introduce a word sort list and teach the phonetical reason for the sort. The students practice these sorts, and finally you assess to see that they understand their sort. On TPT, I will be posting a group of word sorts with their phonetical teaching point in just a couple of weeks, if you are interested in a simpler version. I believe you are a "follower" of mine, so you will get an email notice. As soon as I post it, I will announce it on my blog too. I hope this answers your question. If you were thinking in terms of more "activities" to do with spelling words, send me another question. If you have any more questions, just let me know. :-)

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I am a 2010/2011 Teacher of the Year. I have 16 years of teaching experience, most of those years in 3rd grade. I have taught many EIP Reading students, EIP Math students, and ESOL students in addition to general classroom students for most of those years.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I believe the workshop model is the best way to teach students to learn. This provides instruction as well as practice in a gradual release model. I believe in using data to determine instruction. I am a strong supporter of teaching in small groups. I believe the small group model provides the best results for success across all content areas, not just in reading. To engage my students, I often use games to reinforce a new skill, or for practice of an older skill. I know how to make learning fun, so that students actually ask for more!
