Hi I am not a teacher yet but I need to create a Lesson plan. I need a detailed lesson plan that has all the sections like objectives, common core standards, accommodations etc. I need a lesson that is ela based. I need a lesson plan that states step by step how to teach a specific topic. Thanks.

Hi Galit. I am a little unsure of what I can do for you! I create units with lessons and activities in them, but I rarely will have a typed out lesson plan included since every state and district have different requirements. If you are looking for a template or one that is already finished for you, I suggest googling or searching for an "ELA lesson plan" for your grade level online. Hope that helps!

Hello Susan I am wondering if your numbers to 120 unit is easily adaptable for just numbers to 100? I am in Canada and our little grade ones don't have to count beyond 100 just yet. I can certainly challenge those that are ready but for those that aren't I would like to be able to easily adjust it to meet our curriculum needs. Thanks!

Susan Jones - TGIF  (TpT Seller)
Hi Edna! I am wondering if you mean adaptable on your end or mine.

I can tell you that on your end, you should be able to complete most, if not all of the activities I have in the pack with your students to 100. There are number cards that go up to 120, but you can just use the ones up to 100. There are plenty of 120 chart games that could just as easily be played with a regular 100 chart. However, on the assessment there are a few questions that deal specifically with those number higher than 100 since they are a little trickier.

On my end the file would be a bit difficult to adapt for you and unfortunately that isn't something I am looking into right now. If you download the preview, you might get a closer look to see if the unit will help meet your students' needs.

I hope that helps!

Thank you!

Hi.

I am not a teacher, but will be teaching my children Reading and Writing for the next few years. I am interested in purchasing your Narratives, Informative, & Opinion Bundle and am wondering if these come with mini lessons that will eventually lead up to the written pieces? How much prep work I would need before I begin these units?

Thanks.

February 18, 2014 Report inappropriate comment
Susan Jones - TGIF
Susan Jones - TGIF  (TpT Seller)
Hi Andrea! Each of the three units is set up a little differently.

The narrative portion is a scaffolded unit designed to help students write their own narratives. Once it is run through once, your kids will just repeat that process over and over, starting with a "small moment" to expand on. There are little lessons which lead up to the creation of a complete narrative. Later in the unit, we use Jonathon London's FROGGY books to add more fun to our narratives. You could grab a few from the library before you start the unit!

The all about book is a full on research project in which students research and write about their own animal. The prep you will need for this one would be LOTS of books on the animal of their choice. We also use plenty of websites for research, like National Geo for Kids. This unit has a lesson for each and every day throughout the project. With less kids to help throughout this project, you will likely complete it faster than the 4-6 weeks it takes our full 1st grade classroom!

The opinion unit is scaffolded like the narrative unit. This unit has students starting off learning the difference between fact and opinion and then working their way up to writing opinion papers using different "would you rather" prompts. At the end of the unit they try to write persuasive letters to their parents!

I hope that helps lay out the units a bit for you. You won't need much prep for any of the units except for getting the books. The rest should be pretty self-explanatory, but if you happen to have any questions throughout, feel free to email me (smoran892@gmail.com) and I can help!

I just bought your close reading packet. I haven't done any in my classroom yet. Do you do all of it whole group? Do you read the story aloud the whole way through first, and then go back and ask questions? Or do you stop and discuss things along the way? Do you ever use books, and photocopy them for student use? Unless you have multiple copies, how can you do it? Otherwise, how can they make notes? I have so many questions!!!!!!!!!
January 13, 2014 Report inappropriate comment
Susan Jones - TGIF
Susan Jones - TGIF  (TpT Seller)
So many GOOD questions! No worries at all, Michelle - close reading is sooo tricky!

I complete almost all of them whole group and I always read it first. These are designed to be slightly higher than the students can decode themselves. I do have a high group that can read through most of these themselves and then I guide them through the questions during guided reading.

In the primary grades, we are supposed to set the foundation for our students to understand this process. At first it is SO hard for my kids and it seems pretty painstaking... but after months now, my kids are doing great!! Most can provide strong evidence for their answers and at the very least, they all know they have to provide evidence and go back to the text to try and find it!

You can certainly use books, but it is important that students have their own copies so they can highlight, circle, make notes, etc. I think it gives them a real ownership. I have been having a lot of trouble finding texts simple, yet complex enough for 1st graders, which is why I created these.

If you choose a story or a longer text, you will want to only focus on a small portion of the story (a few paragraphs or a page) and dive in. When there is too much text, it is overwhelming.

I would suggest doing the process whole group first and talk it through. A lot of modeling will be necessary!

I hope this helps :)

I just wrote a small blog post about it if you are interested (although I think I answered more here, lol):

Oh, I love this! I know this might be a long shot but thought I would ask anyway. Is there anyway to get this but with just a regular line for the printables instead of the handwriting line? I teach intervention to 3rd graders who are reading on a much lower level. This looks appropriate but the handwriting lines would be too babyish for them. I totally understand if you don't have the time to add those in or you're unable to do so.

Hi Susan, I bought and downloaded the Word Work Games bundle and some of the activities are blurred out, Skippy the Snail and Brad the Crab for example. Is it supposed to be like that? Thanks!

I have the same issue as nellers below (Comment posted Dec 3, 2013) with "Common Core writing for first grade". There are random lines in a lot of places, not just black lines but blue ones...I wanted to use this but I'm confused by the exact things s/he mentions.

Thanks!

I purchased your common core writing for first grade but some of the pages have weird lines on them and seem to be missing information. The "in this unit..." page has bullets but they are blank, the next page "what is a small moment" has boxes, and some random black lines on it. Has anyone else experienced this problem? What can I do? I appreciate your help.

Thank you!

Hi Lori,

There are plenty of these activities that are used whole group, but personally, I use most of them in small groups as skill reinforcement or for literacy centers.

Do you include directions for each writing prompt? Do you do this whole class or small groups? Thanks

Hi Lori! Minimal directions for each prompt are included on the student pages as the prompts are self-explanatory and so is the lay out. I use this for both whole group and small group when necessary! Hope that helps :)

I know other people have asked the same question, but I printed off the whole unit in colour only to find none of the font printed, even though in my download it was all there. Can you please tell me how I can get this with all the writing?

Susan...I saw your First Grade Common Core giveaway last night, and decided I couldn't wait to be a winner...and I bought it immediately. Well...it's Sunday night, and not only can I not get it downloaded, but it's $4 off : (

When I try to download, it says the file is damaged. I don't know if that means it's on your end or mine. I've downloaded numerous purchases, and didn't do anything different than usual.

Hope you read this tonight...I'm ready to make stations for tomorrow!!! Your work is exceptional. It's just the way I would make it look if I were making it...
Sincerely,
Julie

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I taught 1st grade for 3 years in Las Vegas, NV before moving back home to Massachusetts. I am still teaching first grade, which just happens to be my ABSOLUTE favorite grade to teach! I love the growth shown throughout the year and I can't get enough of the sweet smiles of my little firsties!

MY TEACHING STYLE

I believe you have to sell it!! I make everything a "game" or I add the word "fun" and smile a lot before we do the activity! I swear, it works like a charm :)
