I have looked at the fifth grade math standards, and I don't see where they involve linear equations. I am new to fifth grade math. I know that with the adoption of common core in Georgia, fifth grade math has undergone a major change. Did this use to be a fifth grade standard which has moved to another grade?

This unit was developed for sixth and seventh grade students in California... but has also been used in fourth and fifth grade when linear equations is introduced in California... sorry I do not know when it is introduced or taught in Georgia...

I am new to fifth grade math this year. I am not seeing where fifth grade math involves negative integers. Am I overlooking it? Have you used this with fifth grade students? Please let me know if I am overlooking something since I am new to fifth grade math.
I also wanted to thank you so much for the order of operations unit. I purchased it, and I am currently teaching the unit. I love the graphic organizers, and the step by step instructions on how to teach it. I have moved from third grade to fifth grade math this year, and these types of units are exactly what I need in order for me to provide my students with the rigor and depth of instruction that they need.
I definitely will be purchasing more of your units after my experience with this one.

This unit does a fabulous job of conceptualizing addition, subtraction, and multiplication in the order of operations. I did feel as if it needed division as well. I'm sure the question will arise about division from my students and I want to explain it correctly so that it flows well with your explanations. Do you have division available to add to this unit? It would absolutely be the icing on the cake!

Hi Jeanette, unfortunately, due to the fact that division is a two step process it makes it really confusing for students when you try to model it using this strategy... I have tried for years to find a way to do it effectively and was unable to do it... sorry... I move to division when they have mastered addition, subtraction and multiplication and have discovered the rules... I introduce division as a game... I give them the expression and the answer and have them figure out the order of operation... having done the unit, they are very fast to discover that division goes hand in hand with multiplication... hope this helps!!!

I ordered your Super math units - Order of Operations and love it. I taught 3rd grade for 13 years and starting this school year will be teaching 6th grade math. I am looking for ideas and different ways to teach my students math. Would it be possbile to include in your examples some divison? I am trying to use some of our state test question examples and I am stuck on one with division.

I have seen this model used, and I love it. In Interactive Notebooks, we usually place visuals on the left and words on the right, which helps the appropriate sides of the brain in processing. You could do the same thing with your processing sheet.
Just a thought of how to make this awesome lesson even better!

Your "Order of Operations without Rules" unit looks interesting. I was trying to review the concept with my 7th graders before state testing and it was NOT good. Order of Ops comes later in my curriculum this year, but just from the review I can tell I have my work cut out for me. I used many different activities, etc, but they haven't grasped that multiplication doesn't always come before division, etc.
Glancing at the preview for this unit, I see what looks like the "multiple representation triads" that I use often in my classroom. But I am confused about whether that is something you present to the kids only, or is there guided instruction and then they work on some in groups/independently. I just can't tell if there will be anything in the unit that I don't already do!
Can you just give me an overview of the types of activities in the student pages? It would be worth it to me not to have to design my own sheets, etc! If you aren't comfortable giving me that much information, I completely understand. Just please let me know.

The unit is based on guided instruction... you present the first problem... then they do the ones that follow... the unit is different because students have to describe the expression in words first... then represent... then evaluate... so an expression of the type 8 + 6 * 5 + 9 * 6 is 8 plus six groups of five plus nine groups of six... this allows them to represent it... and then the evaluation is very easy... no rules to memorize...
It is difficult for you to design your own work sheets as each page carefully builds on the next one...

Thanks Susan. I could say that we are standing on top of Uluru in Australia, or I could could use the name of one of the gorges in the Kimberley as my students would be familiar with the names. I'm really looking forward to trying this.

I certainly like your Hot Air Balloon Unit for introducing addition and subtraction of integers, but have you found that the students see the 0 as 'ground' and say that a balloon can't go below ground level (ie into the negative numbers)? I'm teaching year 8 students with mixed ability classes in Australia.

Hi Pamela,
I use the Grand Canyon as an example. If they are standing on the top of the Grand Canyon, the hot air balloon can go up or it can go down into the canyon and I represent it on the board. Normally after that representation, I don't get that concern any more.
