I am a native Southern Californian, have lived in San Diego since 1968. I transferred to San Diego State University, obtained my teaching credential and never left the area. I have been employed with San Diego Unified School District in the Early Childhood Education Department since 1971. During this time, I have been a teacher, lead teacher and administrator of Early Child Development Centers. I “retired†in 2003, but have been employed part time with the Early Childhood Education program ever since and loving it.
Preschool children are active learners and love to explore. My teaching style is hands on- active learning. Children need a balanced program of teacher directed and child orientated activities.
Col. Salomon, one of my Child Development Preschool Centers was recognized by the San Diego Unified School District Board of Education’s Schools of Success for the successful emergent literacy program. This was the first time that a child development site ever won an award and recognition of preschool teachers.
I attended Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri and received my A.A. degree in Child Development. I transferred to San Diego State University and received my B.A. and Teaching Credential.
I have been in Early Childhood Education with San Diego Unified School District since 1971. I started as a preschool teacher, and then Lead Teacher. In 1975, I was promoted to a Center Administrator until 2003 when I retired from the district. I was chairman of the Literacy Committee from 1999-2003. I helped organize and present numerous literacy workshops on topics concerning pre-literacy skills. These workshops included topics on Shared Reading, Read Aloud and Print Rich Environment. The second series of workshops involved Integrating Literacy throughout the program. I also trained various Early Child Development Centers teachers in a developmentally appropriate emergent literacy program.
