TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have 35 years experience teaching English and Math in public, private schools and college. I have a MA in Reading, and credentials in English, Reading and mathematics. I have taught 6th grade through college. My emphasis has been on critical thinking skills, problem solving, literature and writing. My activities are often student centered. Also look for cross curriculum projects that I have done. Many involve the internet.

MY TEACHING STYLE

My classroom is student centered using active participation through small and large flexible groupings. I am constanting taking workshops and refining my teaching to use the most up-to-date teaching research. And I love to teach!

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

I have been a BTSA Provider in the William S. Hart School District in Santa Clarita, Ca. I have presented my lessons at National and state conferences.

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

I attended Cal. State Univerisity - Los Angeles and received my M.A. in Education and teaching credential in 1974. I began teaching for a private high school in Santa Monica in 1974 where I developed their Reading program. I also taugh Reading to adults at El Camino Junior College in Torrence, Ca. After 10 years of private school teaching, I moved to Burbank Calif. where I taught English and math in a middle school. I introduced technology to my classes and used original lesson plans to encourage my students to do better. After 13 years in Burbank I moved to Santa Clarita, Ca and taught Algebra full time in Junior High. I then graduated to a new digital high school to teach English full time. When I retired in 2009 I became a visiting professor for DeVry University and teach writing and critical thinking skills. I also substitute teach to keep current with curriculum and teaching trends. I will probably teach until I no longer can drive. Then I will ride a horse to school!

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

I was mathphobic as a child and earned by math authorization as a personal challenge to overcome my phobia. As a result, I understand what math practices make kids mathphobic and I have created a series of child friendly math units to make the subject more meaningful. I have begun uploading those units which I have also presented to Gate workshops and at National Conventions on teaching.
