I taught 9-12 grade English Language Arts, Writing, Journalism (yearbook, newspaper, and literary journal) in a school with a population of 2500. I have also worked as a CRISS (CReating Independence through Student-owned Strategies) trainer and a 6-Traits writing trainer for the past twelve years and worked at the district level with curriculum implementation and design for five years. I have also been a writing coach. In 2012 I founded and am now the Executive Director of The English Teacher's Friend, a site and service for secondary English teachers. Lead by example. When I want my students reading and writing I read and write with them. I believe our schools need more creative and relevant materials in the classroom. In many ways, textbooks are no longer needed. Plus, we need to move away from doing all the work as teachers. All the information that we used to give is now readily available. Our roles have changed so that we are no longer the disseminators of information, we need to be the guides to their learning.
