I've been teaching 1st grade for 8 years and have lived to tell about it. Barely. :-)
Get in there and get down and dirty! I do guided reading and workstations, but will be trying out the Daily 5 this year because I've been doing 14 stations at a time and changing most of them out every week. My days of staying at school until 6:00 are coming to an end! I hope! I believe in differentiated instruction, writing workshop, conferencing, building relationships with students and their families, sitting in the floor with the kids and making a big ole' mess during math, and walking around barefoot in the classroom. If the kids want to be barefoot...they can, too! If you're comfortable, you learn! Let's do it!
The stress I endured last year almost killed me, so waking up every day is an honor. I've presented at a conference or two here and there. Maybe again someday. :-)
Bachelor's Degree in English/Creative Writing from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville Masters Degree in Teacher Education from UT-Knoxville GO VOLS!
I teach at an urban magnet school in downtown Chattanooga whose magnet 'focus' is the theory of multiple intelligences developed by Dr. Howard Gardner. Outside of school, I enjoy UT football and basketball, my husband and I bowl in a league (although that doesn't mean I'm any good), I've recently taken up archery, I'm a reader, writer, painter, jewelry maker, etc. You know...I have ADHD. :-)
