TEACHING EXPERIENCE & INTERNSHIPS 8/07 - Present Stone Memorial High School Crossville, TN Technology Engineering Instructor Teaching a modular based technology program to students in grades seven through twelve. Subjects taught in this class are; AutoCAD, Biotechnology, Computer Animation, Desktop Publishing, Engineering, Electricity, Environmental Technology, Control Technology, Computer Repair, Mechanisms, Robotics, CNC Milling Alternative Energy, and Graphic Design. 8/04-8/07 Frank P. Brown Elementary School, Crossville, TN Science Teacher Teaching 7th and 8th grade science classes. As the coach of the chess program, sent a team to National competition every year. Placed 21st or better at Nationals. Sent teams to the regional State Tournament. Participated in a variety of other tournaments. Responsibilities included: planning, implementing, and assessing units in chemistry, environmental science, earth science, physics and biology. Management of student behavior and work ethic. Participated in staff meetings, department meetings, and team meetings. 8/02-5/04 South Pittsburg High School, Marion County School District, South Pittsburg, TN: Technology Education Instructor Teaching a modular based technology program to students in grades seven through twelve. Spearheaded an invention convention. Generated positive press for the school. Was supervisor of the science club. Responsibilities included; planning new science curriculum, planning, implementing, and assessing units in chemistry, environmental science, earth science, physics and biology. Participated in staff meetings, department meetings, and team meetings. Became a member of the National Science Teachers Association and participated in their annual science teachers’ convention. Attended conference on Discipline with Dignity. 7/01-8/01 New Start, King County Work Training, Seattle, WA, Environmental Project Leader In charge of designing an environmental project for students that are at-risk of not succeeding in school. Students were between the ages of 14-17. The project was run with the assistance of the King County Parks Department. This project was a work-study in which students were paid minimum wage and received a .5 credit in biology. Duties included; management of student behavior and work ethic at the work site, instruction in the classroom in environmental issues and botany, assessment of students’ behavior and performance in the field and in the classroom. Student duties included; identification of native and invasive plant species, removal of invasive plants, care and maintenance of parks, and use, care and maintenance of tools. A very successful project in which I was able to connect with several students. 9/00-6/01 Cascade Middle School, Highline School District, Seattle, WA, Science Teacher Taught four seventh grade and one eighth grade general science class. Two of the seventh grade classes were honors. Responsibilities included; planning new science curriculum, planning, implementing, and assessing units in chemistry, environmental science, earth science, physics and biology. Participated in staff meetings, department meetings, and team meetings. Staff development attended included; Generational Poverty in Education, and Brain Based Learning and Curriculum Planning. 1/00-6/00 Hidden River Middle School, Monroe School District, Monroe, WA: Student Teacher Taught three science periods, one math period, and one study hall period to Seventh graders. Responsibilities included planning lessons and units, participating in staff meetings, parent conferences, grades, and an action research project 10/99-12/99 Cedar Way Elementary, Edmonds School District, Edmonds, WA: Internship Assigned to observe a 5/6 split. Responsibilities included teaching one math and one LA lesson, observation of cooperating teacher’s classroom management skills, reviewing available technology, copying worksheets, and one-on-one interaction with students 8/99-10/99 Greenwood Elementary, Seattle School District, Internship Assigned to observe a first grade class. Responsibilities included observation of planning and implementing of the cooperating teacher’s lessons, observation of cooperating teacher’s classroom management style, and a slight amount of interaction with the students. WORK HISTORY 1997-1999 Laboratory Technician, Affiliated Computer Services (ACS), Lynnwood, WA. Lab technician for a microfilm processing company. Duties included duplication of microfilm and microfiche, density tests on the film, quality control of film, record keeping of all film received, and general maintenance of lab equipment. 1993-1997 Marine Biologist, NWO Inc., Seattle, WA Placed aboard various commercial fishing vessels in Alaska. Duties included; determining the mass of each catch, sampling of each catch for diversity of species, identification of species of fish, crustacean and mollusks, average length of a variety of target species, collecting stomach and scale samples, daily, weekly, and monthly reports of catch information to the National Marine Fisheries Service, collecting samples and recording sightings of any marine mammals. Independent work in harsh conditions. 1992-1993 Keeper of Reptiles, The Nashville Zoo at Grassmere, Nashville, TN. In charge of the care and well-being of large snakes and lizards. Duties included feeding of large snakes and lizards, up-keep of enclosures, keeping of records, assisting the curator in the maintenance of venomous animals, and giving tours and lectures to people of all ages. Was trained in emergency response for this position. 1991-1992 Volunteer Lecturer, Byars-Dowdy Elementary, Lebanon, TN. Brought live reptiles to 5th grade classrooms and gave a demonstration and lecture on reptiles.

MY TEACHING STYLE

Educational Philosophies Thomas R. Tatum The predicament of humankind is quite strange. Albert Einstein once wrote, “Our situation on this earth seems strange. Every one of us appears here, involuntarily and uninvited, for a short stay, without knowing the why and the wherefore.” My style of teaching helps young adults to investigate the why and the wherefore. I do this by addressing multiple intelligences, giving students real-life, hands-on problems, and by creating an atmosphere that promotes learning and production of quality work. I believe that each child is a unique individual who needs information presented to them in a variety of ways. Every lesson I present is done so using a variety of methods. I will, for example, give a PowerPoint presentation, and have models of the concept for the students to manipulate. I will present auditory information where possible. Students will move around to different learning stations or modules. Students will be given problems and be allowed to explore and develop their own theories through hands-on projects. Students will, on occasion, be allowed to act out concepts in a play or create a song to express a concept. My goal as an educator is to prepare young adults for future challenges. I give students problems that relate to the real world. I am always trying to explain why they will need to know these things. Students will learn to work with others through group activities. Many times I have told students, “You HAVE to learn how to work with people you do not like. If you have a job making $200,000 a year, are you going to quit that job just because you do not like a coworker?” As an instructor in a project based classroom, I would be a guide to the students. When the teacher's role is to guide, providing access to information rather than acting as the primary source of information, the students' search for knowledge is met as they learn to find answers to their questions. For students to construct knowledge, they need the opportunity to discover for themselves and practice skills in authentic situations. Providing students with access to hands-on activities and allowing adequate time and space to use materials that reinforce the lesson being studied creates an opportunity for individual discovery and construction of knowledge to occur. I also listen to the students. Equally important to self-discovery is having the opportunity to study things that are meaningful and relevant to one's life and interests. One way to take learning in a direction relevant to student interest is to invite student suggestions about the lessons and units of study. Given the opportunity for input, students generate ideas and set goals that make for much richer activities than I could have created or imagined myself. When students have ownership in the curriculum, they are motivated to work hard and master the skills necessary to reach their goals. A positive classroom environment is vital to student success. In my classroom, students will feel secure. They can present ideas without fear of humiliation. All ideas are considered in my class. Sometimes the most ridiculous idea is the best idea. Helping students to develop a deep love and respect for themselves, others, and their environment occurs through an open sharing of ideas and a fair approach to discipline. When the voice of each student is heard, an environment evolves where students feel free to express themselves. The students can disclose information and trust me to make the right decision. For me, teaching provides an opportunity for continual learning and growth. One of my hopes as an educator is to instill a love of learning in my students, as I share my own passion for learning with them. In our competitive society it is important for students to not only receive a solid education, but to work with someone who is aware of and sensitive to their individual needs. I am such a person and will always strive to be the best educator that I can be.
