Thank you for your feedback, and I'm glad you were able to adjust the materials to fit your needs (that is why I offer most of my documents as an editable Word file...many other TPT sellers only offer their products as PDFs or read-only files).
I would be interested to know why you thought "some" of the example sentences were not appropriate. Are you referring to one of the example sentences on tone? "If I had a family member who was injured by a gun, my tone in an article I wrote about guns would probably be ________________." (A suggested answer would be "serious" or "formal.")
I guess if this is what you are referring to, then it's important to consider the demographics of your students, as you did, and change the sentence to suit your students' experiences. However, this sentence is rather effective for my students because many of them already understand the seriousness of guns and weapons, and the answer of "serious" would be what they would give. It's not like the sentence really allows for answers like "fun" or "casual." This would be silly. So, I wouldn't call this sentence "inappropriate" even though I understand where you might be coming from, if in fact this is the sentence you were referring to.

This comes with all the information and materials you need to set up literature circles. Here are the included documents: Info and Guidelines Handout with Teacher Notes, Reading Log Chart, Write-Around Prompts and Template, 25-Word Abstract, Role Sheets, Thinkmarks Basic Four, and Thinkmarks Extra Four.
Nonfiction text for reading is not included. What I've usually done for nonfiction text is locate a magazine or newspaper article on current or pop events. Or I copy a section out of a content-based text book (like science or history). Sometimes I tailor-select the passages based on my classes' personalities. Here are two current short pieces that I would use in my own classroom:
