I'm very sorry. I'd very much like to make all my stuff free, but it's not fair to me and the other sellers. Getting all this stuff here... it's a lot of work. Very little of what is here would still be here if we were all doing this for free.

Hey Scott! I saw you on the home page of TpT today and your image caught my attention. Can I ask who made your avatar picture?! THanks!

Hello Jenna,

I think it is simply a piece of clip art. I may have used Paint Shop to add the words to the white board but it has been a while and I can't exactly recall. I'm not sure I even still have the original file. I wish I could be of more help! I have several other computers I can check on to see if I can find that image if you'd like it. It is public domain.

As a male primary grade teacher I'm in the distinct minority in my district. so I was glad to find some 'male teacher' artwork.

Wow, the home page of TpT. That's as close to cover of Rolling Stone magazine as I could ever hope to get. Thanks. I'll keep looking and if I find where I found it I will forward the information.

Thanks the info Jenna.

Cheers, Scott

Thanks so much for your quick response. I have already purchased this and as I am looking at it, I LOVE it! Our school is all about "research based" materials, this is why I asked. I am going to try it to help build fluency in my low readers. Thanks for sharing.

You are so welcome. Glad to hear you have a sensible school. At the very least you can say you contacted the author who reports six years of good results. I don't know if it's statistically significant but thanks again for recognizing that there may be worthy ideas at play here.

Gina Andersen  (TpT Seller) re: Five Minute Phonics - How to spell the 1/2 the English Dictionary
I would like to try this in my small groups, can you tell me if this program is researched based and if so where can I find that information? thanks so much.

Dear Gina, (Ms. Anderson?)
No, it is not researched based. The only hard data I can give you is that I've been using it in essentially this same format for six years and that I seen nearly all my students (not including the learning disabled) master the rules and the multi-syllabic words very quickly. Faster than you'd expect (at 2nd grade), often by mid year!
The students don't all consistently apply the rules to their current grade level writing. I'd love to find out how much of this learning stays with them. I do not have the resources to do a study. I waiting for someone to discover the brilliance (obviousness!) of this approach to a whole *lot* of English words.
I do know that John Sheflebine (a reading expert from the Sacramento State University) recommended phonetic manipulation as an aid to reading during a seminar he taught just last June, 2013. I felt very proud that we do this daily. You may want to look up that. I wish I could give you a link, but I can't.
I'm sure the last thing you're interested in is opinion but I will give you mine anyway. It seems like such common sense to teach these things. But my experience is that common sense often takes a back seat to the latest educational fads which are pursued blindly by "educators" (i.e. not teachers) At least from what I can tell of the way my district is chasing depth-of-knowledge from common core and Professional Learning Communities as the latest concrete examples.
Regardless if you purchase this material or not I wish you well. I respect you greatly for checking if it is researched based which makes sense. I wish more things in education were.
Thank you for asking.
Yours in education,
Scott Beatty (at TeachersRock60)

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

11 years elementary Subbed two years (prior to credential) at ALL levels K -> 12, even honors science nearly every day. 20 years experience creating useful working software as a hobby (if you see any software uploaded).

MY TEACHING STYLE

Direct Instruction (a LOT of overheard/projection), also many test questions geared for state standards often (multiple choice) to teach how to "rule out". All the 2nd grader thematic packets here are seat work for my students during appropriate seasons & holidays. I realized that if I carefully constructed packets students (even lowest readers) could SKIM back and fill in the blank lines. They make for good science and social studies units.

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

My "shining moments" are when I see PROGRESS in my students or when I hear those most beautiful words uttered spontaneously from a student, "Oh... I get it!"

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

Bachelors in Chemistry 4 years post graduate education (medical field) Of course, a teaching credential.

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

Won only "Teacher Who Makes a Difference" award 2014 at my school. Hobbies - my grandchildren, creating curriculum, computer programming, photography, whitewater kayaking, learning Spanish, music and dancing! - Thanks for looking me up.
