The preview looks amazing but I am wondering if it is, given you are in the US, something I can use here in Australia without too much alteration. I thinking feet, inches vs cm, metres...etc. How much fiddling would I need to do?
Still looks very tempting though :)

Thanks

Teaching in Room 6  (TpT Seller)
Well, they definitely have American spelling :) As far as the metric vs. customary system, there is a whole strand in CCSS where the students need to convert all of the measurements, so there are a bunch of feet to inches types of things, but there are also a bunch of m to cm things as well. Those all occur mostly in Quarter 3 (and then reviewed again in Quarter 4) I wouldn't say that it is an overwhelming prospect and not a whole lot of them, but they are in there.

The first two Quarters (from what I can recall off the top of my head right now) don't have any of that at all. They may say something with feet in a word problem, but nothing that would affect the outcome as far as not knowing what ft are (ie: If a fish tank is 3 ft long, how long would 3 fish tanks be? More of a multiplication problem than needing to know how long ft are)

This will work for any class/student who needs help with the structure of writing a paragraph. If your class just hasn't grasped the basic structure, therefore inhibiting good craft writing, then it would work. The prompts are broad and deep enough for all levels of thinking.

Good morning! I am a first grade teacher, formerly PK teacher. I just finished my masters in May (yea!) with a degree in Mind, Brain and Education – a subfield of education. The first program was started at Harvard by Howard Gardner and Kurt Fisher (if you haven’t read any of Kurt Fisher’s work on Skill Theory and you are interested in the cognitive processes involved in learning, you must read his work!)

Cut to the chase. When I moved up from PK to 1st I was shocked by my students’ lack of number sense. I spent an entire year and all last summer trying to figure out what was missing. In Nov I attended a workshop that on number sense. When I heard the presentation I recognized all the “big” names of the research I had been investigating. The workshop was a training session for an iPad app (Native Numbers). It seemed like a valid, robust app, but I am a skeptic and had to know: would this really work.

I am here to tell you that with the first skill set I saw every cognitive model of learning embedded in this app. I also realized that this app is more than a learning tool; it has built in formative and summative assessment as it is adaptive and levels up and down based on student performance and leads to mastery.

Now I am on a “mission” – everything we read tells us our students are lacking number sense. I believe this app is a fabulous tool to remediate those deficits. I have no vested interest in this app except that I am one of those people that has to solve problems and when I think I have found possible answers, I have to share that with others. Our kids are too important not to share---which is why I love reading blogs! I am asking for teachers to simply read the research and then try out the app and give me feedback---or give the feedback yourself to the developers. I am that convinced. I am not a salesman and I feel quite strange in this new role I have taken upon myself…but I have nothing to lose, or gain, except knowing that maybe we can have an enormous impact on our students!

If you have any questions, please e-mail me at tatergraderswife@yahoo.com Check out the app at www.nativebrain.com – you can find the background of the developers and read about the research behind the app. You can also watch a video on that site or go to these YouTube links:

I know this was long, so thanks for reading. Please let me know if you have questions!!!

Stephanie, I was also thinking that this format would be a really fun way for kids to practice various skills. I teach third and fourth, so I think I might be able to use some of the mats in this set, but not all of them. Third graders could use a multiplication and division one! Just basic facts, would be good for them. You could do a couple of mats with multiplication, a couple with division, and a couple with mixed operations, maybe. What do you think??!

I have purchased this and am starting to get things ready to be copied and ready for next school year. Do you usually print this entirely in a booklet, copy by weeks, or individual copies for each day? I am also wondering about projecting on the SmartBoard to work on saving copy work---a major crunch in our district. Thanks for any input you can give me on how you shared with students. Have a great weekend. :)

I copy each page as I need them (usually a week or two ahead). So I would keep it on the computer and just print out what you need. I don't have a SmartBoard but if you could project it done way, that would cut back on copies if you used it as morning work instead of homework.

I am thinking about buying this product for my 6th grade class. Now that we are implementing the new ccss we will be doing several research projects throughout the year. I was wondering if this might be too simple for sixth graders?
My thought is, if the kids get the paragraph writing down, the research papers will be that much easier. Once we get going it could be changed to homework. Or, depending on how much time it takes it could be placed in the morning routine. I didn't give you a great question but it is always nice to bounce ideas off of other teacher. Happy teaching!

Hi,

Hi, I really love your materials. I have a question about the Paragraph writing materials. It looks really good. I teach 3 5th grade classes writing in a Writing Workshop format. I will begin using the new pages you recently added this week.
How do you hold your students accountable for doing quality work on the reading logs? As the school year has gone on, I see that some of my students are not as careful or thorough with their answers. During the first semester, I quickly checked most students' logs on a daily basis. I think I will try random spot checks to see if that helps.
April 20, 2013 Report inappropriate comment
Teaching in Room 6
Teaching in Room 6  (TpT Seller)
I actually do random spot checks too. If I notice the quality is lacking, we do more in class work with the logs (I use them to have the students respond to our core lit or whatever we are reading) and collect them. I do also collect them every Friday and look at the logs. I write some comments if kids need a few extra pointers too. That seems to help.

Is there a quarter 4 packet for 4th and 5th grade to this?
We are getting ready to depart from Every Day Math, but this would be a nice way o keep that spiral going with practice of the new common core.

I believe my role in the class should be to impart new knowledge, and the students should be doing everything else. I train my students to be as self-sufficient as possible so that they gain the most out of my class. My motto is, if I am the only one working, I am the only learning...so let's let the kids work and learn!
