Great question! I use task cards for a variety of things in my classroom. Some of my favorite uses are as review, pre and post assessment, for early finishers, or in a small group.

For review, my students love to play SCOOT ,or go on a scavenger hunt where I hand the cards around the room and they hunt for them and then answer the questions. Both of these methods allow for students to get up and move around instead of just a worksheet while sitting at their desks. I also love to play Stinky Feet with the questions and table groups. I have a blog post about the game here http://4thgraderacers.blogspot.com/2013/04/making-test-prep-fun-5-stinky-feet.html

For pre and post assessment, I use the cards before we learn about the topic to see what their knowledge base is. I like to use the same set of cards before and after learning so that students can get a sense of everything we have done.

Early finishers can use task cards to keep their learning going when they have completed an assignment. I like to allow students to research their answers when they are working on a set as an early finisher.

Finally, I use task cards to pre-teach and review in the small group setting for those students that need a little more time to find success.

I hope that this helps, and please let me know if you have any other questions.

I am loving this concept and want to use it to introduce the UGRR to my 8th graders. I know my brain is tired but I am having trouble understanding how to start it.

I get that I am putting them in 6 groups but Group 1 has the starting spot of "After a full day's work, go back to your cabin to rest." And, Group 2 has "Go to your cabin to work on the freedom quilt". Doesn't that send 2 groups of students to the same "In Your Cabin" card spot in the classroom? It seems like I am sending my students to only cabin, plantation, the road or the woods to start. Is that okay? Is that what is supposed to happen? Then from there they farm out to wherever the dice tells them to go? I'm sorry. I know your directions are clear but I'm having one of those days!

In the Middle,
I totally understand, I have been having one of those weeks. You are correct that two groups will be sen to the cabin. I had to do this, otherwise it would of sent one group directly to freedom. After they have each taken a turn they should disperse nicely.
I hope this helps, and please let me know if there is any way that I can help!

Just curious about the content of the word problems. I couldn't tell from your preview what type of problems these are. I teach 3rd grade and am looking for mostly multi-step addition, subtraction and multiplication problems. Our students have not been introduced to fractions or division yet (coming up in January). Would most of these problems be along the lines I am looking for?
November 30, 2013 Report inappropriate comment
Teaching In the Fast Lane
Teaching In the Fast Lane  (TpT Seller)
Thank you for your interest. The problems at the beginning of the year (August) begin with addition and subtraction and then work their way into multiplication (October) and division (November.) By the December set there are also some simple fractions like one half or one third when given an easily divisible number. The sets are very much mixed, and include many problems for each operation, so while more often than not the problems would fit your needs there will be some with more advanced skills included.
Hope this helps. Please let me know if I can help in any way.

I just posted a question on your blog regarding your CHAMPS posters? Do you have those on TPT? I would love if you would be willing to share them with me!

What grade levels are these warmup best suited for? I teach seventh grade Texas History and I'm looking for good warm up questions.

I created the questions with fourth graders in mind, but I think they would work for seventh grade as well. They are meant to be just a quick something to get class started.

I purchased the map notebook bundle, but did not realize that I also purchased all of the individual items in the bundle. Is there any way to return the individual items or the bundle?

Thank you for asking! I am currently in the process of reformatting and making an answer key for this product. I should have it done in the next couple of weeks or sooner.

This is a great powerpoint. I was wondering, though, why the Mountains and Basins region is titled the way it is?

Great question! When I bought the clip-art to use in the presentation the regions map was pre-labeled that way.

You mentioned that you included scaffolded notes, but I'm not seeing any. Where would I look?

Also, do you think there is room to add economic activities?
Thanks,
Jodi

The scaffolded notes mentioned are the different levels of structure included in the fold-up. You have the option of using a blank template, a template with headers, or a template that is already needed.

The information is pretty squeezed in there, however if you copied the templates at a larger %, probably about 120% there may be room.

I hope that this helps. Please let me know if you have any further questions.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I am in the midst of my fifth year of fourth grade at a suburban school in Texas. I have the best students in the world that make my job so much fun!

MY TEACHING STYLE

In our classroom I try to provide as much choice to students as possible. I employ a lot of stations and tictactoe style activities in which students can choose how they would like to show me what they have learned. Our school just got our first set of Ipads and I am anxious to incorporate these into our classroom as well. Cooperative learning and community building are the glue in our classroom and I will never give either up. I operate on the principles that every student wants to talk, move, and have fun so I try to incorporate as much of each into every day we have together. Visit my blog to see what is going on in our classroom at http://4thgraderacers.blogspot.com/

Teachers Fellow Graduate

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

I attended Texas State University to earn my degree in Interdisciplinary Studies with a teaching certificate in early childhood through fourth grade with an additional certification in english as a second language. I enjoyed Texas State University so much that I immediately applied and was accepted into the Teacher Fellows program there to earn my masters. Accordingly, I was able to complete my first year of teaching while attending graduate courses and completing an action research project. I earned a Masters in Curriculum and Instruction in this program that also instilled in me the necessity for cooperative learning and community building in the classroom.

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

When I am not working on my classroom I enjoy reading, traveling, and racing cars. It is currently one of my goals to visit all fifty states and all seven continents, but I won't stop after reaching that goal.
