Yes Dan, You have permission to use the item in your classroom and to reproduce it as many times as you like for your classroom setting only (for as many years as you like too!). The license does not extend outside of your classroom needs however, so if you share the resource with another teacher, the license does not cover their students too. Just point them back here to purchase another license for themselves. You are also agreeing not to post the item on the internet to be freely downloaded by others (permission will granted to post the item on a password protected site for use by your students).

Janice, There's a lot of logical thinking involved, but here are some tips to get you started:
* The numbers give information about how many groups of blocks will be shaded in any given row or column... for example
* Notice that the first column contains only the number 30. That means that in that column, 30 squares will be shaded in together. Since there ARE only 30 squares in that first column, you can go ahead and shade in the whole column.
* Next, look at the first row. The numbers 2 11 13 1 tell you that in that row, the solution will contain a block of two, followed by some space, a block of 11, space, a block of 13, space, and a block of 1. The hard part is that you do not know how large the spaces will be and whether there will be any space at the front or back of the row. This is where the logic comes in: you'll notice that 1) the column you already filled in tells you that there is no space in the front of the row (go ahead and fill in the first block of two) and 2) if you add up the numbers in the first row 2+11+13+1=27, there is only room enough in the row to hold three more squares, which means the spaces between the blocks can only be one square! Fill in the first row accordingly.
* Now, having the first row and column filled out correctly, you will find that you can fill out at least the first bit from every row and column. The more you get filled in, the more information you have to help you fill out the rest!
* Don't worry! I find that there is a tough learning curve up front, but once you get those first two rows/columns filled in, you'll be hooked and so will you students. It's very rewarding once you get the hang of it.

I purchased this unit and I think it is wonderful. I am wanting to use some of these activities for my IBL unit at my middle school. We have a closed internet portal that only my students, myself, and administrators have access to with usernames and passwords. Would I be allowed to put some of this material on this portal for my unit if I show where my resources came from. This portal can not be accessed by anyone on the internet except for my current students. The point of the portal is so administrators can see what we are teaching electronically and if a student is absent they can stay caught up by going on the portal and doing the activities on their own. As a collaborative assessment, you should allow about 30 minutes, but I'd say that's a ball-park estimate. You should consider level of students, comfort with the content, and experience with this type of assessment when blocking time in your schedule. I always find that each class presents different needs. Some need lots of coaxing to get those verifications and justifications out onto the paper. I hope it goes well for you.

The review checklist was made from my experiences in a pre-CCSS Algebra 1 course. I have added the Common Core citations as they apply to the individual items, but did not begin with the standards and create the list from that. For example, the CCSS have most of the linear items in Grade 8 (or prior) and most of the non-linear items are listed in High School. I am currently working on three new checklists for Common Core Math in Grade 6, 7, 8. Those should be posted in a week or so. Watch for them! And if there is something more specific you are looking for, let me know. I'll put it on my to-do list.

As long as they are already successful with linear systems, I see no problem with the regular version of this assessment for 7th graders. But if you are teaching Common Core algebra (ie gr 8), I believe it stops before quadratics. Let me know how it goes! -Emily

Science Rules (TpT Seller) re: Algebra Performance Task: Multistep Equations with Tables and Graphs
I love your "the plant problem" and "the car Problem" yet as I go over them I wonder if my students have covered this and can work on it independently (as a sponge after exam) in science? 7th grade. I think that a typical 7th grader would not have enough algebra to handle either of those problems independently, but I suppose it depends on the child and the curriculum at your school. You should check with the 7th grade math teachers. I'm pretty sure the concepts and the graphing would be entirely appropriate, but the expression writing may be a little challenging without any guidance. Let me know how it goes!

FYI my students had trouble starting this puzzle. There is no good starting point since none of the line use all the spaces. Your other puzzle had a line that used every spot between solid and spaces.

Caryn, Thanks for your feedback. You are right about a solid line fill being the easiest start to this kind of problem. I'll bear that in mind when I offer ratings for my next puzzle. So, in the absence of the easy start, this puzzle has several good starting points for using logical reasoning to fill in portions of rows and columns. For instance, several rows have blocks of 25 or so. Since there are only 35 squares in a row, that means that the middle 15 squares MUST be filled in in those rows. Instruction #3 attempts to explain this idea with some illustration. It's the key skill to achieving mastery over these types of problems. I'm not sure what you mean exactly, but hopefully this will answer your question:
* The square image that comes up on the product page was created specifically to fit in the small dimensions of that thumbnail... it is for advertising purposes only and is not part of the actual document.
* Furthermore, the 'sample' thumbnails may not match exactly with the actual document because I have revised the document a few times since posting the original images.
Is there something in a particular image that you want or need?
